A female patient presented with empyema thoracis and was planned for decortication. Peroperatively a cystic mass was found in the left lower lobe which was resected and diagnosed as a case of teratoma of lung on histopathological examination. This unusual case of primary intrapulmonary teratoma is being reported here.
Adenoid cystic carcinoma of trachea is a rare but distinct salivary gland-type malignant neoplasm. This paper described such a case in a young female in whom the mass that progressed to cause almost complete obstruction before it was diagnosed.
Chewable tablets containing low dosage flouride content were prepared using two varities of celluloses and their in vitro parameters were evaluated. An eighteen month clinical trial revealed that both these formulations were effective in controlling the caries. However, ethyl cellulose is proved to be superior to methylcellulose as a controlled release matrix material in controlling caries. Thus this study recommends ethylcellulose matrix tablets containing low flouride content is an efficacious and cost effective drug device in controlling dental caries.
Neem is one of the most widely researched tropical tree, with almost all it's parts being put for a variety of uses. In the present study, the antibacterial effect of Neem mouthwash against salivary levels of streptococcus mutans and lactobacillus has been tested over a period of 2 months. Also it's effect in reversing incipient carious lesions was assessed. While streptococcus mutans was inhibited by Neem mouthwashes, with or without alcohol as well as chlorhexidine, lactobacillus growth was inhibited by chlorhexidine alone. The initial data appears to prove it's effect in inhibiting S. mutans and reversing incipient carious lesions, longer term clinical trials are essential.

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous pneumothorax occurs subsequent to a disruption in the continuity of visceral pleura and escape of air into pleural space. It is usually difficult, sometimes impossible to detect evidence of pulmonary pathology by clinical or conventional radiographic methods. Computed tomography provides additional informations not obtainable with conventional diagnostic modalities. METHODS: To determine the role of CT scan in the aetiological diagnosis and subsequent management of patients with primary spontaneous pneumothorax, a perspective study was undertaken. RESULTS: A total of 40 patients with spontaneous pneumothorax with normal skiagram chest after management of pneumothorax, were included in the study. In 75% of these cases, CT revealed underlying lung pathology as a cause for primary spontaneous pneumothorax. CONCLUSION: Our study shows that CT scan is a useful imaging modality in determining the aetiology of primary spontaneous pneumothorax.
CARIDEX, is a new approach to pediatric operative dentistry. An in vitro study with the aim of comparing the efficacy of the CRS system against the conventional caries removal system was carried out by studying the dentin topography following caries removal by the two systems restorative materials--Silver amalgam, Composite resin, Glass Ionomer, IRM nad Poly--F to the CARIDEX treated dentin using the Housfield Tensometer. The results were evaluated statistically and significant results were observed.
This study was undertaken to establish laboratory evidence of minimum etch-time for primary enamel, for effective retention of occlusal sealants. The effect on enamel of contamination by oral fluid for different exposure times was also evaluated. Here it is shown that a short etch-time of 15 sec is satisfactory for primary enamel, and is also sufficient to produce the required etch-pattern for the strong binding of sealants.
In dogs anaesthetised with pentobarbitone sodium raising the body temperature from 37 degrees C during mild exercise increased the rate of respiration and pulmonary ventilation but decreased the tidal volume. Cold blocking the vagi during the exercise resulted in decrease in respiration rate and minute ventilation, but increase in tidal volume. At 40 degrees C body temperature vagal block was not effective in decreasing the respiration rate and minute ventilation, which may be due to stimulation of lung irritant receptors through hyperthermia.

Etching patterns by 20 percent phosphoric acid on caries-like lesions of enamel (white spot) untreated and treated with 0.4 APF were studied at 30, 60, 120 seconds of etch-times using the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The surface topography of acid-etched teeth varied according to the etch time. Acid etching of caries-like lesions treated with fluoride showed etching patterns similar to sound enamel. Based on Silverstone's classification, thirty seconds etch-time produced type III pattern of surface morphology, while type I and type II were observed with 60 and 120 seconds of etch time. Fluoride treated lesions showed increased porosity and in addition to a surface coating of numerous small globules of calcium fluoride. Low level of topical fluoride before sealant application should be beneficial, since this allows a more rapid rate and increased degree of remineralization and possible arrest in the progress of caries lesions.
Iontophoresis has a wide range of application in dentistry, one of which is to produce a non invasive technique of analgesia. With the avoidance of needle, in this technique better patient management and good doctor-patient relationship can be built. This study provides an insight into the comparative evaluation of 2%, 4% and 6% lignocaine hydrochloride (plain) in providing analgesia iontophoretically while extraction of deciduous teeth. Patient satisfaction was seen when higher drug concentration and longer duration of iontophoresis was applied.
The present study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of dentifrices containing low fluoride concentrations on microhardness of sound enamel in 50 healthy young premolar teeth. They were divided into five different groups according to the concentrations of fluoride in dentifrice used. The Vickers hardness of enamel was measured using a Zwick microhardness tester under 1000 g load and a Vickers indenter before and after the application of fluoride dentifrices. The results of the present study suggest that low fluoride concentration dentifrices are as effective as the higher concentrations in increasing the hardness of enamel.
