We have operated on 6 cases of temporomandibular joint ankylosis, resecting a small amount of bone to create a false joint and then covering the two joint surfaces with sheets of perichondrium (autogenous, from the ribs). The perichondrium forms new cartilage on the joint surfaces, and the early results are encouraging. Only one of these cases was operated upon more than one year ago. He has an excellent result and this case is reported on in detail.

To improve understanding of malar bone fracture, experimental fractures on dried skulls and clinical sensory dysfunctions were investigated. In the experimental study, the fracture lines are largely confined to the suture lines between the zygoma and neighbouring bones in addition to the maxillo-ethmoidal suture. Antral walls, anterior and posterior, are relatively free from fracture lines in the region of the superior dental plexus. This coincides with the findings of dento-alveolar sensory disturbances which are relatively lower in incidence and earlier in recovery than those following Le Fort type fractures. To study this sensory status gives interesting information about the fracture lines and the anatomical course of the superior dental nerves.
We describe a reverse-U incision for the secondary repair of cleft lip nose deformity. With it, the desired correction, for the various types of deformity, is easy to achieve--especially in the snub nose. Wide subcutaneous undermining in the lower half of the nose results in a subcutaneous layer of fibrosis. We believe this scar layer is more important in holding the ala in the corrected position than is any direct surgical attack on the underdeveloped cartilage itself.

The mediocolegal autopsies performed in the Department of Legal Medicine, Hokkaido University School of Medicine, during the 10-year period, 1965-1974 were 617 cases, 87 of them in newborns, 530 in infants and adults. Of cases autopsied as homicidal or suspicious deaths in infants and adults, 88.5% were recognized to be due to external causes, 9.1% to disease conditions and 2.5% undetermined. Of neonatal deaths, 10.3% were stillbirth, 78.2% live birth and 11.5% undetermined. Among the deaths due to external causes in infants and adults, 43.3% were homicidal, 7.2% suicidal, 32.6% accidental and 16.6% undetermined. Of external factors causing death, 42.9% were force, 36.8% asphyxiaton, 8.0% chemical substances and 8.0% heat. The causes of homicidal deaths inflicted with cutting or piercing instruments were circulatory disturbance, asphyxia and infection. In deaths inflicted with blunt instruments, they were mostly injuries of central nervous system and circulatory disturbance in the minority. All categories of causes of death were recognized in accidental deaths. All neonatal deaths were due to external causes. Their causes of death were mostly asphyxia and blunt force injuries of head.
A longitudinal study of electrical pulp testing was carried out in 27 cases, or 53 maxillary halves following Le Fort type fractures and Le Fort type osteotomies. On the average, most teeth required positive responses around 7 months or around 11 months afterwards. The central and lateral incisor teeth demonstrated poor results; only 8 percent and 36 percent responded positively at 8 months, and at 14 months, 23 per cent and 50 per cent, respectively. The overall percentage of responsive teeth was 29 percent at 6 months and 85 percent at 14 months. These results are discussed and compared with those of segmental maxillary osteotomy, together with the value of pulp testing in the diagnosis in fracture and osteotomy.
