Seven inositol-containing phospholipids in Saccharomyces cerevisiae can be resolved by two-dimensional chromatography on silicic acid-impregnated paper. Four of these lipids are stable to mild alkaline methanolysis; one of these has already been characterized as a mannosyl di(inositolphosphoryl) ceramide. Addition of labeled 2-deoxy-d-glucose to a growing culture results in label appearing in five lipids, some of which are alkali-stable and have the same R(F) values as the alkali-stable inositol-containing phospholipids. These lipids are labeled rapidly. The deoxyglucose is incorporated intact, probably in a glycosidic link, since the deoxyglucose is released by mild acid treatment.

The total amount and the composition of polar lipids of the photosynthetic bacterium Chromatium strain D grown in high (7,500 ft/c) and low (100 ft/c) incident white light were measured. Cells grown with low incident light as compared with cells grown in high incident light contained approximately 3.5 times more chlorophyll and contained significantly more internal membranes (chromatophores) as determined by electron microscopy. Nevertheless, there was approximately 40% more phospholipid in cells grown at 7,500 ft/c than in cells grown with 100 ft/c; the phospholipid composition of the cells was similar under both conditions of growth. These observations lead us to suggest that the organization and perhaps localization of the phospholipids in Chromatium may be dependent on the light intensity supplied during growth.
A polar lipid containing about 20 per cent of the lipid soluble inositol has been purified from cells of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This compound labeled with (3)H-inositol, (32)P(i), or (14)C glucose was isolated from aqueous pyridine extracts by means of paper chromatography. Unlabeled compound was obtained by a differential solubility scheme. Analytical and degradation studies suggest that this compound can be formulated as a mannosyl-diinositol, diphosphoryl-ceramide. It can be converted by treatment with base or acid into a mannosylmonoinositol phosphoryl-ceramide, a composition which relates it to the basic structure of the phytoglycolipids.
The polar lipids of the autotrophically grown, obligately anaerobic, photosynthetic bacterium Chromatium strain D were separated by paper chromatography. Four major phospholipids were identified: lysophosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, and cardiolipin. In addition, three glycolipids were observed and characterized, namely, monoglucosyldiglyceride, which is found in other biological systems, and (mannosyl, glucosyl)-diglyceride and (dimannosyl, glucosyl)-diglyceride, which heretofore have not been observed in nature.

The fucolipids of simian virus 40 (SV40)-transformed Balb/c mouse and herpes simplex virus (HSV)-transformed hamster cells of varying degrees of tumorigenicity were examined. In the virus-transformed cell lines and in a spontaneously transformed cell line, as compared to non-transformed cell lines, there was a decrease in the incorporation of fucose radioactivity into fucolipid IV. Fucolipid IV is the least chromatographically mobile, presumably most complex fucolipid. Only in the highly transplantable SV40- and HSV-transformed cell lines was the decrease in incorporation of radioactivity in fucolipid IV as marked as that observed in oncornavirus-transformed cell lines. Similarly, only in the highly tumorigenic DNA-virus-transformed cell lines was there a significant increase in incorporation of radioactivity from radioisotopically-labeled fucose into fucolipid III as has been observed in oncornavirus-transformed cell lines.
This paper presents a contribution to the techniques of supervision. At the beginning of any supervision it is necessary to clarify the condition which have lead to that particular supervision. Motivation and setting are mentioned. Against the declared goal of the supervision the teams develops regularly different kinds of resistance; these are carefully discussed. Every form of resistance is presented from the point of view of groupdynamics and clinic organisation. The last paragraph is dedicated to the dealing with resistance.
In a prospective, single-blind, randomized study, a single 2-g dose of metronidazole was compared with a seven-day course of 500 mg given twice daily in the treatment of symptomatic vaginal discharge associated with Gardnerella vaginalis. Based on resolution of symptoms and on cultures negative for G vaginalis, 86% (40/46) of women treated with the single dose and 97% (35/36) of women treated with the seven-day course were considered cured at seven to ten days after treatment. Evaluation at 21 days after treatment, however, indicated that only 46% (16/34) of patients treated with the single 2-g dose were considered cured compared with 86% (26/30) of those treated with the seven-day course. Treatment of sexual contacts did not significantly improve cure rates in either group.

Men attending four Seattle gay bars were asked to complete a self-administered questionnaire including measures of sexual behavior, perceptions of peer norms in the area of sexual safety, personal human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) risk estimate, and knowledge and use of a variety of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) prevention services. Twenty-nine percent of the sample reported engaging in unprotected anal intercourse at least once during the 2 months before the survey. Differences in peer norm perceptions, age, HIV risk estimate, and intent to be sexually safe in the future were found between those engaging in unprotected anal intercourse and those not reporting unprotected anal intercourse. No significant differences were found in level of education, use of AIDS prevention services, and whether or not a person had been tested for HIV. Implications for prevention programs are discussed.
