Angiographic findings in intraventricular hemorrhage in newborn infants.

The present investigation indicates that early filling of deep veins is common in newborn infants on angiography. The characteristic findings of the intraventricular hemorrhage in newborn infants are (1) hydrocephalus and (2) prolonged stasis of contrast medium in choroid plexus in the lateral ventricles.

[Traumatic thrombosis of the internal carotid artery: Report of three cases due to head injury with basal skull fracture (author's transl)].

Three cases of traumatic thrombosis of the internal carotid artery due to head injury with basal skull fracture were reported. The mechanism of thrombosis, the symptomatologic characteristics and the prognosis were discussed with reference to the data in the literature. Four mechanisms by which the condition may be produced include; injury to the intrapetrous or cevernous portion of the carotid artery during basal skull fracture, injury to the point of emergence of the carotid artery from the cavernous sinus as a result of shearing strains suffered at the time of injury, a direct blow to the neck or trauma to the paratonsillar area by a foreign object carried in the mouth, and stretching of the carotid artery by heperextension and lateral flexion of the neck. Secondary symptoms due to thrombosis of the carotid artery after an interval develop most commonly from twelve to twenty four hours. The prognosis in these patients is mostly poor. Therefore, angiography should be performed immediately on any patient suspected of having this lesion and treatment should be considered.

[Intracranial hemorrhage in an infant due to vitamin K deficiency --successful management of spontaneous intracerebral and subjural hematoma].

A one-month-old male infant with spontaneous intracerebral and subdural hematomas due to vitamin K deficiency was described. He was breastfed. Loose stools continued and began to contain blood. He had fever, vomiting and convulsion, and became drowsy. The blood studies showed anemia and hypoprothrombinemia. Left carotid angiograms revealed intracerebral and subdural hematomas. He was treated successfully by immediate operation and administration of vitamin K. 2) Vitamin K deficient hemorrhage beyond the immediate newborn period was discussed with reference in the literature. Three etiologic factors included, decreased vitamin K intake, decreased intestinal absorption of vitamin K and decreased production of vitamin K by colon bacteria. The most important factor of the three seemed to be low vitamin K intake. Intracranial hemorrhage was recognized in about one third of the cases in the literature. It was emphasized that vitamin K deficiency occurring beyond the immediate newborn period was very important as a cause of intracranial hemorrhage in infancy.

Neutral glycosphingolipids containing mannose from the bivalve Corbicula sandai.

1. A unique subclass of ceramide oligosaccharides from whole tissue of the fresh-water bivalve Corbicula sandai has been isolated. Through the use of chemical, enzymatic, and physical techniques, two novel glycolipids were characterized as mannosyl-beta (1 leads to 4)-glucosyl ceramide and mannosyl-alpha (1 leads to 4)-mannosyl-beta (1 leads to 4)-glucosyl ceramide. 2. The components of fatty acids and long chain bases in the two glycolipids were analyzed by gas-liquid chromatography and were further identified by mass spectrometry. The data show that, with respect to the major components, both lipids have similar caramide moieties.

[Three cases of spontaneous bilateral external carotid-cavernous sinus fistula (dural arteriovenous shunts in the region of the cavernous sinus) (author's transl)].

Since Fincher reported a case with arteriovenous fistula between the external carotid artery and dural sinus, many type of cases have been reported. On the other hand, so called the external carotid avernous fistula has been recognized less 20 cases in literature. We have observed three additional cases of dural arteriovenous shunts in the region of the cavernous sinus. Case 1. A 52 year old woman had suffered from left side sever headache. There was weakness of the left extraocular muscles and left ptosis. A bruit was heard over the left orbit. She was treated for hypertension since 38 year old. And she has no history of recent trauma. Selective internal and external carotid angiographies showed the bilateral external carotid cavernous sinus fistula. No operative treatment was performed in this case and the symptomes disappeared with decrease of blood pressure. Case 2. A 50 year old man came to this clinic with chief complaints of right ptosis, diplopia and headache. He was treated for diabetes mellitus and hypertension for six month...
