Distally based dorsalis pedis island flap for coverage of the distal portion of the foot.

A distally based dorsalis pedis island flap is described which has been successfully used for reconstructing the distal portion of the foot in two patients with amputation of all 5 toes. The indication for this flap is a wide skin defect of the distal half of the dorsal foot without history of local vascular disorder. The arterial inflow of the flap comes from the posterior tibial artery via the deep plantar branch of the dorsalis pedis artery, while the venous drainage is most likely to be through the venae comitantes of the dorsalis pedis artery to those of the deep branch.

[A case of retrovesical abscess due to Crohn's disease].

A 29-year-old man was admitted with pain on urination and high grade fever-up. Mass was palpated above the right lobe of prostate. Cystoscopy revealed an edematous region in the upward to the right ureteral orifice. CT revealed the retrovesical mass in the same region. The surgical specimen obtained by transurethral resection showed severe inflammatory changes, but no malignancy was found. Antimicrobial chemotherapy had been continued, but the mass did not disappear on palpation and computed tomography and cystoscopy revealed pus-discharge from the center of the edematous region was found. An operation was performed under the diagnosis of retrovesical abscess. The terminal ileum had formed adhesion to the posterior bladder wall. Segmental resection of the ileum and partial resection of involved segment of the bladder were performed. The pathological diagnosis was Crohn's disease. Inflammation of ileum seemed to infiltrate the bladder wall and formed an abscess. After the operation symptoms disappeared.

Effect gamma-melanotropin (gamma-MSH) on the conditioned behavior.

Effects of a dodecapeptide containing the gamma-MSH sequence on two types of conditioned behaviors were investigated. This peptide enhanced the avoidance response in poorly-performing mice, while it suppressed the self-stimulation lever pressing in rats. At higher doses, the peptide induced slight convulsions of a myoclonic type. The significance of these behavioral changes has not been assessed, but the results suggest that gamma-MSH may have some physiological function in the central nervous system.

A factor in human saliva that induces differentiation of mouse myeloid leukemia cells.

The differentiated functions of phagocytosis, locomotion, and morphological changes into cells resembling granulocytes and macrophages were induced in cultured mouse myeloid leukemic cells, M1 clone 34, by treatment with human saliva. The rates of induction of these differentiated phenotypes were proportional to the concentration of saliva added and the period of treatment. The factor inducing differentiation was nondialyzable and heat labile. This factor was purified 70-fold by fractionation with Diaflo membranes and DE52 column chromatography. The activities inducing the three differentiated characters examined were purified together, suggesting that they were all due to the same factor.
