Anti-implantation activity of some indigenous plants in rats.

Various extracts of one hundred and eight medicinal plants were screened for their anti-implantation activity in female albino rats. Out of these, 50% ethanolic extract of Codonospis ovata Benth (PL); 50% ethanolic, acetone and benzene extracts of Puararia tuberosa DC (TUB); aqueous and methanolic extracts of Punica granatum Linn. (PX) and ethanolic and acetone extracts of Rubus ellipiticus Smith (PX) inhibited pregnancy in 70-90% of rats. Similarly ethanolic extract of Adhatoda vasica Nees (LF) and Kigelia pinnata DC (PL); ethanolic and acetone extracts of Acrostichum aureum Linn. (PL), Juniperus communis Linn. (SD), Lepidium capitatum H.f. & T. (PL); ethanolic and benzene extracts of Citrulus colocynthus Schrad (LF) and acetone extract of Codonopsis ovata Benth (PL) showed 60-70% anti-implantation activity. Extracts of a few plants VIZ. Dolichos biflorus Linn. (SD), Ferule orientalis Linn. (PL), Nerium odoratum Lamk (RT), Randia dumetorum Lamk (SD) and Ruta graveolens Linn. (PL) could inhibit pregnancy in 50-60% of rats. The rest of the plants were either inactive or showed insignificant antifertility activity.

Hypocholesterolaemic effects of dietary fibre.

Role of dietary fibre in lowering serum cholesterol has been studied in mongrel dogs. Pectin, wheat bra, guar gum and Isabghol were fed with standard diet. No statistically significant changes were found in serum cholesterol levels in any groug (P greater than .05) after one week. Later by 15th day, pectin reduced serum cholesterol significantly i.e. 12.4% (P less than .02). However, in groups being fed other forms of fibre the levels of serum cholesterol were reduced by 3.8% to 7.0

Effect of dietary fibre on oral glucose tolerance test.

Role of dietary fibre in lowering blood sugar levels has been studied in mongrel dogs. Pectin, wheat bran, guargum and Isabghol were fed with standard diet. Blood sugar levels were almost the same on 7th day (P less than .05). However, after 15 days pectin reduced blood sugar levels significantly (P less than .05), while other dietary fibre could not bring significant effect on blood sugar levels (P less than .05).

Asphyxiating thoracic dystrophy of the newborn.

A case of asphyxiating thoracic dystrophy occurring in a newborn male infant who died at 26 hours is reported. The clinical and radiographic features of this uncommon condition are discussed, together with its mode of inheritance and differential diagnosis.

Girdlestone arthroplasty.

A series of 92 patient who underwent excision arthroplasty of the hip (Girdlestone arthroplasty) as a primary procedure is presented. The operation was performed for various conditions which included femoral neck fracture, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, tuberculosis, septic arthritis, unreduced posterior dislocation of long duration, fracture of the acetabulum, avascular necrosis of femoral head and bony ankylosis. Excision of head and neck of the femur was found to be an excellent salvage procedure for infected hips especially yielding uniformly satisfactory results at all ages irrespective of the disease. It provided a painless, mobile hip. Except for shortening and unstable gait, no other handicap was observed; the disadvantages of this handicap were outweighed by its advantages, compared with the disadvantages of other sophisticated hip operations such as replacement, and mould arthroplasties or even total hip replacement. Our results were excellent in 21% of cases, good in 44% and fair in 26% while they were poor in 9%. In view of its functional end results, we feel that this measure can be a good alternative to more modern and sophisticated hip operations in the form of partial or total hip replacement under Indian conditions.

Spinal stenosis: its diagnosis and management--a clinical and radiological study.

A clinico-radiological study conducted on 124 patients including 89 cases of spinal canal stenosis and 143 normal (control) individuals is presented and the various causes of stenosis of the spinal canal are reviewed. Evaluation of canal to body ratio using plain radiographs of lumbo-sacral spine based on the Jones and Thomson technique and myelography were found very useful in diagnosing spinal canal pathology preoperatively. Spinal stenosis is more common in males, predominantly in the fourth decade. Extensive decompression laminectomy in appropriately selected cases yielded satisfactory results, any associated prolapse intervertebral disc requiring excision of the herniated disc in addition to laminectomy.

Primary replacement arthroplasty of the hip in femoral neck fractures: a study of 145 cases.

A series of 145 patients (77 males and 68 females) with fracture of the neck of the femur treated by primary replacement arthroplasty (prosthesis) is presented. The indications, complications and results of operation are discussed. Prosthetic replacement has yielded satisfactory results in 91.7 per cent of cases and is a particularly suitable procedure for Indians.
