Studies on osmotic and ionic regulation in Setaria cervi indicate that it can osmoregulate in hypertonic solutions but not in hypotonic solutions. The depression of the freezing point (delta degrees C) of host's peritoneal fluid was -0.71 degrees C.

A retrospective study of 177 patients attending Tata Memorial Hospital over a period of 40 years from 1942 through 1981 is presented. These patients who had "primary lesions" in the head and neck region, breast, esophagus, lung, and elsewhere as carcinoma or sarcoma developed "second primary" at different sites, after the treatment for the primary lesion after a variable period over years--as "metachronous lesions" (139 patients). Another group of patients presented with "double primary" at initial clinical examination and investigations, and these were "synchronous" lesions (38 patients). The analysis brings out the relationship of these lesions in both groups to each other with reference to habits in Indian population, viz, pan chewing, tobacco smoking, and alcohol consumption and time interval and histological variations among these lesions. An interesting relationship has been observed in certain aerodigestive tract primary lesions developing second cancer due to continued effect of "carcinogens," as habits are hard to die even after developing cancer. Analysis also brings out an interesting observation of involvement of "physiologically and anatomically" related organs developing second cancer at an interval or concurrently. A solitary pulmonary nodule or an opacity in a patient with extrathoracic cancer should not be considered as "metastatic" unless proved otherwise; metachronous lesions need to be treated energetically, adequately, efficiently, and aggressively in certain clinical situations for better results and salvage.

We have constructed a strain of Escherichia coli that is defective in exonuclease VII and uracil-DNA glycosylase activities. This strain (xse ung) facilitates the quantitation of single-stranded apurinic-apyrimidinic endonuclease activity in crude extracts. Quantitative comparisons of single-stranded apurinic-apyrimidinic endonuclease activity under conditions in which uvrC protein is overexpressed showed no differences, suggesting that single-stranded apurinic-apyrimidinic endonuclease and uvrC protein are probably distinct.

Advancing technology of ultrasound imaging has unraveled numerous problems in perinatology. The 1980's is the era of high-resolution real time ultrasonography, enabling the diagnosis of fetal hydrocephaly to be made in midtrimester pregnancy even prior to the age of fetal viability. The findings obtained by full evaluation of hydrocephalic fetuses with serial ultrasounds are helpful in appropriate counseling of parents by the birth defects team and in planning the best time and management of delivery in a perinatal center. Arrest of progression of severe hydrocephaly in the second half of pregnancy prior to fetal lung maturity has been accomplished by intrauterine implantation of ventriculoamniotic shunts. The potential risk of maternal soft tissue injury from delivery of an oversized head of a severely compromised fetus can be minimized by partial and slow decompression of fetal head under ultrasound guidance using a #20 spinal needle. The influence of the recent developments on better fetal diagnosis and survival of infants with neural tube defects in 1981 was compared to that obtained during the previous five years.
A case of jejuno-jejunal intussusception occurring in a neonate is reported. The distinction between the clinical signs of neonatal and infantile intussusception is emphasised, and the importance of early diagnosis stressed.

We have carried out experiments to identify the regulatory regions of the uvrC gene of Escherichia coli. A uvrC+ plasmid, pUV7, containing the intact transcriptional unit for the uvrC gene, was used to subclone either the structural gene or combinations of the structural gene and 5'-flanking sequences. The plasmids so constructed were tested for ability to restore UV-resistant phenotype to uvrC- cells as an indication of expression of the uvrC gene. The chromosomal DNA in plasmid pUV7 was probed for strong binding with E. coli RNA polymerase in an attempt to identify a restriction fragment which bears the regulatory sequences for the uvrC transcriptional unit. The results indicate that DNA sequences at least 0.9 Kb upstream from the structural gene, but not the 5'-proximal sequences, regulate expression of the uvrC gene. Analysis of protein synthesis encoded by plasmid pUV7 and its derivatives suggest that there may be another gene that lies between the promoter and the uvrC gene and codes for a 27,000-Mr protein. The relation of this gene to uvrC function is not clear.
In order to determine the morphological consequences of the formation of a compressed retinotectal projection, the optic neuropil lamina (stratum fibrosum et griseum superficialis, SFGS) was examined in large goldfish 3 months to 4 years after ablation of the caudal half of the tectum both with crush of the optic nerve (HTX) without (HT). In semithin sections, the SFGS, as delineated with orthograde HRP labeling, shows a persistent hypertrophy of about 25% in HTX and HT groups. Comparison of ultrastructural stereological data with similar data on control and regenerated projections to intact tecta (Murray and Edwards, '82) indicated that this hypertrophy can be attributed largely to an increased number of axons and not to increases in terminal or dendritic compartments. A normal number of synaptic terminals per column through SFGS is conserved in HTX and HT groups. Planimetric analysis and observations using orthograde HRP labeling reveal no group differences in size and shape of terminal profiles. The same number of retinal ganglion cells project to a half-tectum as to an intact tectum, as indicated by estimates of ganglion cell number and of the minimum percentage of them which project to the tectum using retrograde HRP labeling. The results suggest that the regenerating and sprouting optic axons participating in the formation of a compressed retinotopic projection compete for a limited accommodation inthe SFGS and that this capacity to accept synaptic input becomes saturated at the control innervation density. The results are consistent with the formation of a smaller than normal number of terminals per optic axon, numerical estimates for which are given. If the percentage of terminals which are optic does not change, then the number of terminals per axon is reduced by about 40%.
