[The biological properties of Salmonella strains isolated from adult patients at different seasons of the year].

Biological properties of Salmonella strains, isolated in different seasons from patients with the corresponding disease of moderate severity, were compared. Their morphological, biochemical, serologic properties, sensitivity to antibiotics, capacity for synthesizing O-antigen, as well as their virulence for experimental animals, have been studied. Seasonal changes in the virulence of Salmonella strains have been established: the strains isolated in autumn have proved to be more virulent than those isolated in winter. In winter the isolation rate of Salmonella strains resistant to the therapeutic doses of antibiotics is significantly higher than in other seasons. In spring and summer Salmonella O-antigen is synthesized more intensively.

[The fibronectin binding of salmonellae studied by a passive hemagglutination method].

The study has shown that the fibronectin-binding properties of different Salmonella species can be tested by means of passive hemagglutination with fibronectin-sensitized formulated sheep red blood cells (SRBC). S. enteritidis and S. typhimurium isolated from foodstuffs, as well as the representatives of the species S. kottbus, S. anatum, S. tshiongwe and S. newlands, are capable of binding fibronectin. Fibronectin-binding properties have also been detected in Shigella sonnei, as well as in eubiotic microorganisms Escherichia coli M 17 and Lactobacillus plantarum. In pH ranging from 6.5 to 7.4 salmonellae, shigellae and E. coli agglutinate fibronectin-sensitized SRBC much more effectively in acidic pH values, while changes in pH have been found to produce no essential influence on the fibronectin-binding capacity of Staphylococcus aureus and lactobacilli.

[Drug resistance in salmonellae].

The medicinal resistance of salmonellae isolated in the USSR and the Slovak Republic in 1987-1988 was studied. The resistance of salmonellae at this period was shown to decrease in comparison with the period of 1985-1986. The study revealed the presence of multiresistant strains capable of the conjugative transmission of some resistance markers. The minimal inhibiting concentrations of antibiotics to which salmonellae proved to be resistant were determined.

[Incorporation of paratose residue into Salmonella O-specific polysaccharides using enzymatic reactions].

The block mechanism of O-specific polysaccharides biosynthesis was demonstrated for Salmonella nitra (serogroup A) and S. haifa (serogroup B). Due to the moderate specificity of glycosyl transferases from S. nitra, S. typhimurium, S. haifa and S. kentucky (serogroup C3) towards the 3,6-dideoxyhexose structure a paratose residue can be incorporated into the polysaccharide chain instead of an abequose residue, and vice versa.

[Seasonal distribution and age structure of those ill with salmonellosis due to causative agents with different drug resistances].

The medicinal resistance of Salmonella strains isolated on the territory of the Moldavian SSR in 1985 was studied. The greatest number of multiresistant microorganisms was shown to occur among S. java, S. virchow and S. infantis, i.e. the serovars dominating in the etiological structure of Salmonella infections on this territory. The seasonal distribution of cases of Salmonella infections and the age structure of patients with these infections induced by multiresistant strains and antibiotic-sensitive strains were found to have essential differences.

[Incorporation of abequose residues into O-specific polysaccharides of Salmonella serotypes B, C2 and C3].

The possibility of chemical-enzymatic synthesis of O-specific polysaccharide and its modified derivatives was demonstrated with a cell envelope preparation from Salmonella typhimurium using synthetic polyprenyl pyrophosphate oligosaccharides and CDP-[14C]Abe. It was shown that during biosynthesis of O-specific polysaccharides from S. newport and S. kentucky abequosylation reaction occurs prior to polymerization of oligosaccharide repeating units.

[Dynamics of the etiological structure of salmonellosis and of the biological properties of the Salmonellae isolated in a selected territory of the Moldavian SSR 1982-1985].

The etiological structure of Salmonella infections and the biological properties of salmonellae, isolated in one of the regions of the Moldavian SSR where the epidemic process of Salmonella infections reflected the regularities observed on the whole territory of this republic, were studied. Changes in the predominant serovars at the period of 1982-1985 in comparison with the preceding years were shown. Salmonellae belonging to the dominating serovars were characterized by more pronounced drug resistance in comparison with other salmonellae. Some parameters of the epidemic process of Salmonella infections were found to be related to the biological properties of the causative agents of these diseases.

[Enzymatic synthesis of polyprenyl phosphosugars in Salmonella serotype C1].

The cell envelopes of serogroup C1 Salmonella, viz. S. thompson and S. montevideo, catalyze the transfer of radiolabeled sugars from UDP-[14C]Glc and UDP-[14C]GlcNAc into the lipid-linked sugars. Using TLC and DEAE-cellulose chromatography, the radiolabeled products were identified as polyprenyl pyrophosphate N-acetylglucosamine (I), polyprenyl monophosphate N-acetylglucosamine and polyprenyl monophosphate glucose. The derivative (I) served as an acceptor for mannose transfer from GDP-Man with formation of Man1-2GlcNAc1PPPre. A similar reaction was observed after addition of synthetic GlcNAc1PPPre to the cell envelopes.

[Evaluation of the possibility of using genetic and microbiological research methods for resolving current problems in the epidemiology of salmonellosis].

S. typhimurium strains isolated in 14 regions of the USSR have, parallel with considerable similarity in their biological characteristics, a number of essential differences. These differences become manifest in the determination of the plasmid spectra of the above organisms. The transfer of R-plasmid PLE518 F1 me fin+ with a molecular weight of 96 Md to strains, sensitive to the action of typing bacteriophages, renders these strains resistant to the lytic action of a number of phages, which leads to the conversion of their phage type. In some cases it may deteriorate the validity of the method of phage typing, used for epidemiological purposes.

[Etiological structure of salmonellosis and the serotype passage of salmonellae isolated in separate regions of the USSR in 1980-1982].

At the period of 1980-1982 the isolation of salmonellae belonging to 394 serovars was registered in the USSR. Of these, 116 Salmonella serovars were registered in the USSR for the first time. 12 dominating serovars constituted 83.1% of salmonellae isolated from humans, 99% of salmonellae isolated from animals and 70% of all salmonellae isolated from different environmental objects. S. typhimurium was the predominant serovar, found to determine 50% of cases of Salmonella infection. The isolation rate of S. infantis and S. virchow was shown to increase. The existence of definite ecological relationships between infective agents isolated from different sources was established.

[Chemico-enzymatic synthesis of Salmonella newington O-specific polysaccharide and its modified derivatives].

Treatment of the DMan (beta 1-4) LRha (alpha 1-3) D [3H]Gal-derivative of moraprenyl pyrophosphate with the cell envelope preparation from S. newington results in the formation of polysaccharide with beta 1-6 linkage between the trisaccharide units (polymerization degree approximately 8). The synthetic derivatives of moraprenyl pyrophosphate which contain D-talose, 4-deoxy-D-xylo-hexose, LRha (alpha 1-3) DGlc or LRha (alpha 1-3) DGlc (alpha 1-6) DGal were found to serve as substrates for the biosynthesis of the corresponding modified polysaccharides.

[Incidence of antibiotic resistance in Salmonella typhimurium strains isolated in different epidemic situations].

A total of 1800 S. typhimurium strains isolated in different regions of the USSR in 1968-1979 were studied. Of these strains, 68.6% were resistant to 6-8 antibiotics, 7.8% were resistant to 2-5 antibiotics, and 23.6% proved to be resistant to all antibiotics. The number of multiresistant strains sharply increased during the last 10 years. The strains isolated from different sources and in different epidemic situations considerably differed in their sensitivity to the action of antibiotics. The infective agents isolated from the hospital foci of salmonellosis were found to possess the maximum multiresistance. The study of the genetic nature of multiresistance showed that the multiresistance strains had a conjugative R-plasmid with resistance determinants CmTc, type Fin+, incompatibility group F1me. The phage typing of the strains with phages from the collection of the Tbilisi Research Institute for Vaccines and Sera revealed that these strains belonged to phagotype 2. The problems of the relationship between the biological properties of causative agents and the character of the epidemic process of the diseases caused by these agents are discussed.
