In mature cells, 2,4-D retards transcription when it is applied before 3H-uridine incorporation. But transcription is accelerated when it is applied after feeding with 3H-uridine. It has been suggested that the action of 2,4-D on transcription is only at the level of initiation.

The response of serum creatine phosphokinase (SCPK) to intravenous hydrocortisone was studied in different neuromuscular diseases, in Duchenne carriers and relatives of various muscular dystrophy (MD) cases. SCPK activity increased significantly in MD cases, 50% of known and 18.7% of possible Duchenne carriers. No such increase was found in other neuromuscular disease, in other relatives of MD cases and in normal controls. An inverse correlation was observed between the grade of disability and post-steroid percentage increase of SCPK activity in X-linked severe (DMD) cases. Such an inverse correlation was also found between the duration of the disease and post-steroid percentage increase of SCPK activity in DMD cases. A possible explanation is given.
Endogenous levels of adenosine 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate in indole-3-acetic acid induced tumours, and control bean embryos were measured with Gilman protein binding assay. No significant differences in cAMP concentrations were found in IAA-induced tumours, which suggests that IAA does not mediate cAMP synthesis in bean embryos.

A decline in protein synthesis and slow germination accompanies loss of viability in embryos of rye (Secale cereale L.) grains. Associated with this, incorporation of precursors into all the major classes of RNA is decreased and the processing of precursor rRNA to 25S and 18S RNA is retarded. Embryos that just reach 0% viability still synthesize some low-molecular-weight non-nucleolar material, although they do not synthesize protein. It is suggested that early-synthesized RNA could play a major part in determining the extent of protein synthesis at early germination, and thereby regulate the rate at which germination can proceed.
Biochemical (myocardial DNA, RNA, and hydroxyproline) and humoral (plasma [PRA] and kidney [KRA] renin activity) factors were determined in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and normotensive Wistar controls (NR) before and following treatment with minoxidil or propranolol. Minoxidil (150 mg.litre-1 drinking water) effectively controlled blood pressure (17.3 kPa vs 24.9 kPa [130 mmHg vs 187 mmHg], P less than 0.001) despite marked and sustained increases in both PRA and KRA ventricular weight which were not reduced and myocardial DNA, RNA, and hyperdroxyproline which were increased by minoxidil (P less than 0.01). In contrast propranolol did not reduce blood pressure in SHR but ventricular weight was reduced somewhat (3.1 +/- 0.4 mg.g-1 vs 3.4 +/- 0.09 mg.g-1, P less than 0.05); in both SHR and NR, KRA, and PRA were lowered by pranolol. Methyldopa which controlled blood pressure and lowered PRA led to a reversal of hypertrophy. Thus, although blood pressure control is obviously important for reversing cardiac hypertrophy, it may not be the sole factor for the development and reversal of cardiac hypertrophy.
Pentoxifylline--3,7-dimethyl-1(5-oxo-hexyl) xanthine--a new vasodilator compound, was tried in 28 cases of occlusive cerebrovascular disease. A similar group of 24 patients were given xanthinol nicotinate. Although in terms of degree of improvement there was no significant difference in the two treatment groups, improvement was earlier in the group treated with pentoxifylline. No significant side effects were observed with any of the two drugs used in the present study.
A scanning electron microscopic study of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) induced tumour in the hypocotyl region of bean embryos shows a distinct morphological, structural and topographical change from the non-treated bean embryos. The IAA-induced tumour surface, in the hypocotyl region, shows distinct cell enlargement, some cellular proliferation in the parenchymatous tissue, total destruction of the epidermis and stomata and some variation in trichome structures. In dole-3-acetic acid inhibits the normal growth of the epicotyl, and, as age progresses, adventitious roots appear all over the surface. When IAA-depletion occurs, epicotyl growth resumes, which indicates that this tumour formation in bean embryos is an IAA-dependent tumour.

A protein fraction has been isolated from normal human urine which, when injected over a period of 10-15 days in normal rats, produced sustained hypertension. On cessation of injection, the blood pressure fell to normal level within 7-10 days. The hypertension was accompanied by expansion of plasma volume, retention of sodium, and alteration in urinary Na/K ratio. Further, it led to hypertrophy of the adrenal cortex and increased circulating aldosterone without a change in plasma corticosterone values. These results suggest that the protein fraction increased arterial pressure in rats through direct stimulation of aldosterone production resulting in sodium retention and volume expansion.

This study is the first report describing the sequence of biochemical alterations of myocardium during the progression of naturally occurring hypertrophy in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) and then with its reversal by alpha-methyldopa therapy. Changes in DNA, RNA, hydroxyproline, as well as incorporation of 14C lysine into cardiac myosin, were compared with the pattern found in suitably matched controls. A significant increase in RNA, hydroxyproline, and 14C incorporation was observed in SHRs. Antihypertensive treatment caused reversal of hypertrophy and normalization of all biochemical parameters except hydroxyproline, the concentration of which increased significantly as myocardial weight decreased. These compositional changes may help explain the conflicting result of the haemodynamic effects of cardiac hypertrophy.
Cross-sectional as well as longitudinal studies on full-term urban and rural infants demonstrated that the initial extensor plantar response present in the first half of the infancy changed to a flexor plantar response in the later half. The urban infants receiving nutritional supplements showed an advance of 4 weeks over the rural infants. This process of change-over of plantar response was delayed in pre-term infants. However, two pairs of twins showed plantar response almost identical to full-term urban infants.
