Total and differential serum proteins and globulins in leprosy.

Total and differential serum proteins were estimated in 177 adult male patients and globulins in 135 patients. Total serum proteins were slightly lowered in BB, BL and LL patients. Total albumin was low in all types of leprosy, especially in the BL group. Alpha-1 and alpha-2 fractions were unchanged all through the leprosy spectrum. Beta globulins were significantly lowered in LL patients as compared to the controls. Gamma globulins were elevated in all types of leprosy more so in BB, BL and LL patients. Details are presented.

Circulating and tissue immune complexes in leprosy.

Various immunological studies were conducted in lepromatous leprosy patients. There was a polyclonal rise of all the three major immunoglobulins. Serum IgD levels remained unaltered. Positive latex agglutination reactions (RA) and parietal cell antibodies were distinctly more frequent in patients. Eighty-five percent of patients showed a strongly positive complement deviation test, and the mean platelet aggregation titer was 1 in 81 in the patients compared to 1 in 3 in the controls, thus indicating the presence of circulating immune complexes in a large percentage of cases. Immunoglobulins and complement were observed in the dermal capillaries and small arterioles, but not in larger vessels, in 6 of 17 cases. Only one case showed staining of the dermoepidermal junction. Antinuclear antibodies (ANA) were detected in a single patient, and this patient also showed ANA in vivo.

Mis-transcription during uridine starvation in Escherichia coli K12.

Although no beta-galactosidase activity could be induced in Escherichia coli K12 during uridine starvation, material which cross-reacted with antiserum against beta-galactosidase could be detected. The synthesis of enzymically inactive proteins during uridine starvation appeared to be due to errors in transcription.

Renal immune complexes in viral hepatitis.

Twenty-two patients dying of acute viral hepatitis were studied for the presence of renal immune complexes using direct immunofluorescence. A detailed light microscopic study of liver, kidney and other organs was also done and sera scanned for the presence of HBsAg. Results of light microscopy indicate that thirteen of twenty-two patients showed mild to moderate glomerular abnormalities. Immunofluorescence was positive in fifteen of twenty-two patients. IgA being positive in 28%. The incidence of HBsAg was low. It is suggested that both B and non-B type of hepatitis viruses are associated with a high incidence of renal immune complexes along with morphological alterations in the glomerulus.

Human T cell receptors for monkey erythrocytes.

To test the specificity of T cell receptors, erythrocytes and lymphocytes of man and rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta) and erythrocytes of sheep were mixed in four different combinations to observe the rosette formation. During the study, a major proportion of human T cells formed spontaneous rosettes with the erythrocytes of rhesus monkey. A small number of monkey lymphocytes formed rosettes with human group O Rh-negative cells while T cells both of man and rhesus monkey formed rosettes with sheep red blood cells.
