Correlations between cyclic AMP binding and chemoreception in Paramecium.

Paramecium tetraurelia is attracted to cyclic AMP, which probably, as other attractants, signifies the presence of food. Attraction to cyclic AMP was specific, saturable, and, therefore, likely to be receptor-mediated. In these studies, we measured the binding of cyclic [3H]AMP to whole cells and found it to be saturable, reversible, and displaying specificity similar to that of attraction. An HPLC method of separating nucleotides was devised and used to determine that external cyclic AMP was degraded in the absence of IBMX, a phosphodiesterase inhibitor, and that cyclic AMP was taken into the cells in small amounts. Since binding and attraction were subsequently measured in the presence of IMBX, it was cyclic AMP and not a degradation product that served as the attractant stimulus for Paramecium.

The role of ozone/oxygen in clindamycin-associated enterocolitis in the Djungarian hamster (Phodopus sungorus sungorus).

Rectal and oral ozone-O2 gas insufflations prevented a fatal clindamycin-induced enterocolitis in Djungarian dwarf hamsters. In spite of no gross lesions in the colon of these species, the term 'colitis' is justified because of intracellular degenerative changes of colon epithelial cells. Dwarf hamsters are omnivores and are, therefore, more relevant to man than other animal species as an animal model for studying colitis.

[Multivariate analysis of the clinical care of underweight patients].

In a patient group of "underweight" persons, a total of 20 factors of the pregnant status, of the course of pregnancy and birth, as well as of the perinatal birth result, were tested by means of univariate analysis of variance and multivariate analysis of discriminance. Despite marked complexity of the influencing parameters and their interactions, it is shown that it will be approximately sufficient to pay attention to a few parameters to arrive at a comparable objectivation of overall clinical results. It is also evident that conclusions valid for direct obstetric and perinatal medical work cannot be arrived at from retrospective analysis alone.

[Comparison of 133xenon and 123I-isopropylamphetamine for measuring regional cerebral circulation].

In 26 patients the regional cerebral blood flow was measured using 123I-isopropyl-amphetamine. The measurement was performed with a dynamic single photon emission tomograph. In 16 patients we compared the findings with the results of the tomographic 133Xe-Clearance. Both methods seem to be suitable for the measurement of the effective perfusion and gave similar results. In the case of the tomographic 133Xe-clearance we need a more specialized technical equipment whereas the permanent costs are lower and the performance less complicated. Besides the applicability of this method is more universal. On the contrary the use of 123I-isopropyl-amphetamine makes a higher resolution possible depending on the available equipment and does not need an ability to cooperation of the patient. With the presently disposable radionuclides the hope was not yet adequately accomplished, to get a tomographic in-vivo-information of cerebral metabolic and receptor-functions by means of SPECT.

[Treatment of pancreatic fistulas].

Persisting fistulae of the pancreas may develop after necrotomy or operation of abscesses or pseudocysts with drainage following pancreatitis. More rare causes are lesions of the glandula during operation in the upper abdomen or due to accidents. First of all conservative therapy is indicated. When spontaneous closure during two or three months will not take place, closure of the fistula by drainage of its origin into a jejunal loop (Roux) and for fistulas of the head of the pancreas the implantation in the duodenal stump after B II-resection is indicated.

[Determination of superoxide dismutase (sod) in erythrocytes in glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency (G6PD-deficiency)].

Determining SOD in red blood cells was made in 26 carriers of G6PD defect 9 haemicygotic mark carriers and 16 heterocytic mark carriers had a diminished SOD enzyme activity. This is probably due to an inactivation of SOD by diminished reductive equivalents in the metabolism of defect cells. In this way, more oxidatively effective radicals will appear, even OH. among them. The latter may render the enzyme ineffective by binding it to the imidazol group in the catabolic centre. Consequently, an accumulation of the substrate O2-. may lead to a further cell damage, thus causing an increased haemolysis.

[Methodologic aspects and results of a complex long term analysis of a perinatal/peripartal care system. 3. Dynamic aspects].

One important premise for estimation of the development of the results of defined care systems is the observation of movements in time. Besides the knowledge of internal systemic changes also the influence of external factors has to be considered, especially volume and structure of the clientel. Simple methodic statements are sufficient analysing the development complexly.--The secular dynamic of the care system has been objected by uniform use of a defined trend-ratio. The influences after the second world war and some actual trends are reported besides the longtime trend explicitly. Finally a workinghypothesis is formulated in regard to the reasons of preterm labour and fetal retardation.

[Methodologic aspects and results of a complex long term analysis of a perinatal/peripartal care system. 4. Systemic aspects].

Important signs of our present development are high dynamics, increasing complexity and active-preventive orientation. Additional progresses of methods are inevitable for further progress in practice and knowledge. Functional purposeful methods in organisation are necessary. The central problem is the step by step crossing from structural institutional to functional-regional care systems and way of thinking. Methodological-heuristic resources are the concept of a functional system and the theory of hierarchic control systems in a limited scale.
