Thromboxane A2 synthetase inhibitor failed to ameliorate the arterial narrowing during the chronic phase of cerebral vasospasm.

To determine the pathogenetic mechanism underlying the maintenance of arterial narrowing during the chronic phase of cerebral vasospasm caused by subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), we examined the effect of ozagrel, a thromboxane A2 (TXA2) synthetase inhibitor, on chronic vasospasm in a canine two-hemorrhage model in comparison with that of fasudil, an inhibitor of protein kinases. The magnitude of the vasospasm was determined angiographically. On SAH day 7, a vasospasm was observed in every dog. Intraarterial or intravenous administration of ozagrel (3 mg/kg/30 min) did not reverse the vasospasm but tended to increase bleeding. In contrast, intraarterial administration of fasudil (3 mg/kg/30 min) significantly reversed the vasospasm. These findings suggest that: 1) TXA2 does not participate in the maintenance of chronic vasospasm after SAH; and 2) the protein kinases, particularly myosin-light chain kinase and protein kinase C, are involved in the pathogenesis of arterial narrowing during the chronic phase of cerebral vasospasm.

Effectiveness of interferon-alpha therapy in chronic hepatitis C is associated with the amount of interferon-alpha receptor mRNA in the liver.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between interferon-alpha receptor mRNA in the liver and the response to interferon therapy in chronic hepatitis C. METHODS: Interferon-alpha receptor mRNA was quantified by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction using liver biopsies from 40 patients, comprising 20 responders and 20 non-responders to subsequent interferon therapy. RESULTS: The amount of interferon-alpha receptor mRNA was significantly larger in interferon-responders (0.72+/-0.12) than non-responders (0.26+/-0.08) (p<0.01). Regardless of the response to interferon, histological activity index scores and the amount of HCV-RNA showed significant inverse correlation to the amount of interferon-alpha receptor mRNA, whereas the HCV-RNA genotype was not associated with the amount of interferon-alpha receptor mRNA. Logistic analysis and multiple regression analysis showed that the amount of interferon-alpha receptor mRNA was significantly associated with the efficacy of interferon (p=0.0275), but not with fibrosis of the liver (p= 0.2726). CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that the amount of interferon-alpha receptor mRNA is an important factor determining the response to interferon, and may be a new predictor of interferon response in chronic hepatitis C.

An extracellular insoluble inhibitor of cysteine proteinases in cell cultures and seeds of carrot.

An 18 kDa extracellular insoluble protein (EIP18) was found previously in amorphous particles suspended in the culture medium and in the interspaces of cell clusters of carrot (Daucus carota L.) callus, as well as in the extracellular spaces of carrot seeds, being located both in the embryo and at the inner edge of the endosperm. We purified EIP18 by washing the amorphous particles with the mixture of Triton X-100, NaCl and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). We determined several partial amino acid sequences, and then we cloned and sequenced a cDNA for EIP18. EIP18 was found to consist of 133 amino acid residues that included a signal sequence, but it did not contain cysteine, sites for N-linked glycosylation or hydrophobic regions. Since its sequence was found to be homologous to that of inhibitors of cysteine proteinases, namely cystatins, EIP18 was renamed EICC (extracellular insoluble cystatin of carrot). EICC expressed in yeast was also found in an insoluble form in yeast cell walls. EICC prepared from the culture medium of carrot cells inhibited commercial cysteine proteinases and a proteinase extracted from germinating carrot seeds. The expression of the gene for EICC was detected in developing seeds, and the level of its transcript was markedly enhanced upon treatment of somatic embryos with abscisic acid.

The identification of an orally active, nonpeptide bradykinin B2 receptor antagonist, FR173657.

1. An orally active, nonpeptide bradykinin (BK) B2 receptor antagonist, FR173657 (E)-3-(6-acetamido-3-pyridyl)-N-[N-[2-4-dichloro-3-[(2-methyl-8-quinolin yl) oxymethyl]phenyl]-N-methylaminocarbonyl-methyl] acrylamide) has been identified. 2. This compound displaced [3H]-BK binding to B2 receptors present in guinea-pig ileum membranes with an IC50 of 5.6 x 10(-10) M and in rat uterus with an IC50 of 1.5 x 10(-9) M. It did not inhibit different specific radio-ligand binding to other receptor sites. 3. In human lung fibroblast IMR-90 cells, FR173657 displaced [3H]-BK binding to B2 receptors with an IC50 of 2.9 x 10(-9) M and a Ki of 3.6 x 10(-10) M, but did not reduce [3H]-des]Arg10-kallidin binding to B1 receptors. 4. In guinea-pig isolated preparations, FR173657 antagonized BK-induced contractions with an IC50 of 7.9 x 10(-9) M, but did not antagonize acetylcholine or histamine-induced contractions even at a concentration of 10(-6) M. FR173657 caused parallel rightward shifts of the concentration-response curves to BK at concentrations of 10(-9) M and 3.2 x 10(-9) M, and a little depression of the maximal response in addition to the parallel rightward shift of the concentration-response curve at a concentration of 10(-8) M. Analysis of the data yield a pA2 of 9.2 +/- 0.2 (n = 5) and a slope of 1.5 +/- 0.2 (n = 5). 5. In vivo, the oral administration of FR173657 inhibited BK-induced bronchoconstriction dose-dependently in guinea-pigs with an ED50 of 0.075 mg kg-1, but did not inhibit histamine-induced bronchoconstriction even at 1 mg kg-1. FR173657 also inhibited carrageenin-induced paw oedema with an ED50 of 6.8 mg kg-1 2 h after the carrageenin injection in rats. 6. These results show that FR173657 is a potent, selective, and orally active bradykinin B2 receptor antagonist.

Hepatic preservation with histidine-tryptophan-ketoglutarate solution in living-related and cadaveric liver transplantation.

1. Living-related liver transplantation has some advantages in the evaluation of novel clinical protocols, since many complicated factors affecting initial graft function are almost uniform in grafts obtained from healthy donors. 2. To compare histidine-tryptophan-ketoglutarate (HTK) and University of Wisconsin (UW) solution in terms of tissue oxygenation in living-related liver transplantation, oxygen saturation of haemoglobin (SO2) in hepatic tissue and its heterogeneity (CV, coefficient of variation) were measured by near-infrared spectroscopy. The HTK and UW groups consisted of 15 and 49 successful transplants respectively, in which no statistical differences in background were observed. 3. In the HTK group, hepatic SO2 after portal vein reflow was higher (P < 0.01) than that in the UW group, as was that after hepatic artery reflow (P < 0.05). In the UW group, hepatic SO2 remained at the lower level at the end of the operation. 4. Furthermore, the increase in CV after portal vein reflow was normalized after hepatic artery reflow in the HTK group. However, the CV remained at a high level at the end of the operation in the UW group. 5. Postoperative peak aspartate aminotransferase level in the HTK group was lower than that in the UW group (P < 0.05). 6. In cadaveric liver transplantation, higher hepatic SO2 and lower CV of hepatic SO2 in the early phase after reperfusion compared with the UW group (n = 18) were also observed in the HTK group (n = 30) (P < 0.05). 7. In conclusion, recovery of tissue oxygenation and its heterogeneity after reperfusion in HTK-preserved livers were more rapid and homogeneous than in UW-preserved livers in living-related liver transplantation. Accordingly, HTK solution may be a potential alternative to UW solution.

Novel point mutation in the leucine-rich motif of the platelet glycoprotein IX associated with Bernard-Soulier syndrome.

Bernard-Soulier syndrome (BSS) is a rare inherited bleeding disorder which is caused by a qualitative or quantitative abnormality of the platelet glycoprotein (GP) Ib/IX/V complex. We examined a patient with BSS to find a molecular basis for the defect underlying this disease. The propositus was a 39-year-old Japanese female with life-long bleeding diathesis. Sequence analysis of the GPIX gene revealed a T-->C point mutation at nucleotide 1856 (EMBL, M80478), resulting in Phe55(TTT)-->Ser(TCT) replacement. This substitution created a new MnlI restriction site in the mutant allele. Restriction analysis revealed that the propositus was homozygous for this sequence, and the same mutation was not detected in 57 unrelated Japanese subjects. Since this mutation is located in the leucine-rich motif (LRM) of the GPIX polypeptide, the Phe55-->Ser substitution may result in an alteration of the LRM which leads to the impaired surface expression of GPIb/IX/V complex, a characteristic of BSS.

Involvement of L-type-like amino acid transporters in S-nitrosocysteine-stimulated noradrenaline release in the rat hippocampus.

Nitrogen oxides, such as nitric oxide, have been shown to regulate neuronal functions, including neurotransmitter release. We investigated the effect of S-nitroso-L-cysteine (SNC) on noradrenaline (NA) release in the rat hippocampus in vivo and in vitro. SNC stimulated [3H]NA release from prelabeled hippocampal slices in a dose-dependent manner. SNC stimulated endogenous NA release within 30 min to almost five times the basal level in vivo (microdialysis in freely moving rats). In a Na+-containing Tyrode's buffer, SNC-stimulated [3H]NA release was inhibited 30% by the coaddition of L-leucine. In the Na+-free, choline-containing buffer, SNC-stimulated [3H]NA release, which was similar to that in the Na+-containing buffer, was inhibited markedly by L-leucine, L-alanine, L-methionine, L-phenylalanine, and L-tyrosine. The effects of the other amino acids examined were smaller or very limited. The effect of L-leucine was stronger than that of D-leucine. A specific inhibitor of the L-type amino acid transporter, 2-aminobicyclo[2.2.1]-heptane-2-carboxylate (BCH), inhibited the effects of SNC on [3H]NA release in the Na+-free buffer. Uptake of L-[3H]leucine into the slices in the Na+-free buffer was inhibited by SNC, BCH, and L-phenylalanine, but not by L-lysine. The effect of SNC on cyclic GMP accumulation was not inhibited by L-leucine, although SNC stimulated cyclic GMP accumulation at concentrations up to 25 microM, much less than the concentration that stimulates NA release. These findings suggest that SNC is incorporated into rat hippocampus via the L-type-like amino acid transporter, at least in Na+-free conditions, and that SNC stimulates NA release in vivo and in vitro in a cyclic GMP-independent manner.

Increased biliary group II phospholipase A2 and altered gallbladder bile in patients with multiple cholesterol stones.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Multiple cholesterol stones are associated with more biliary complications and show more rapid cholesterol nucleation than solitary stones. Group II phospholipase A2 (PLA2-II) may play a critical role in the process of mucosal inflammation, which in turn may produce pronucleating agents. PLA2-II concentrations in gallbladders and gallbladder bile from patients with different types of gallstone disease were assayed to correlate PLA2-II with alterations in biliary composition. METHODS: PLA2-II protein concentrations were assayed immunoradiometrically using monoclonal antibodies against human splenic PLA2-II. RESULTS: Immunoreactive PLA2-II levels in gallbladder bile were significantly higher in patients with multiple cholesterol stones (68.2 +/- 6.3 ng/dL, mean +/- SEM; n = 24) than in those with solitary stones (24.9 +/- 2.8; n = 20; P < 0.01), those with multiple pigment stones (24.2 +/- 3.7; n = 18; P < 0.01), or control subjects (13.4 +/- 1.7; n = 19; P < 0.01). Increased biliary immunoreactive PLA2-II levels in multiple cholesterol stones were associated with a concomitant increase in the lysophosphatidylcholine to phosphatidylcholine ratio; free arachidonate, protein, and hexosamine concentrations; and gallbladder bile viscosity. The gallbladders showed an increased PLA2-II protein mass and steady-state messenger RNA levels, which was associated with increased prostaglandin E2 levels. CONCLUSIONS: Increased biliary PLA2-II may be of pathogenetic importance in multiple cholesterol stones, probably through potentiating gallbladder mucosal inflammation with associated biliary alterations favoring cholesterol crystal formation.

Inhibition by 1-aminocyclobutane-1-carboxylate of the activity of 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate oxidase obtained from senescing petals of carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus L.) flowers.

We partially purified 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC) oxidase from senescing petals of carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus L. cv. Nora) flowers and investigated its general characteristics, and, in particular, the inhibition of its activity by ACC analogs. The enzyme had an optimum pH at 7-7.5 and required Fe2+, ascorbate and NaHCO3 for its maximal activity. The Km for ACC was calculated as 111-125 microM in the presence of NaHCO3. Its M(r) was estimated to be 35 and 36 kDa by gel-filtration chromatography on HPLC and SDS-PAGE, respectively, indicating that the enzyme exists in a monomeric form. These properties were in agreement with those reported previously with ACC oxidases from different plant tissues including senescing carnation petals. Among six ACC analogs tested, 1-aminocyclobutane-1-carboxylate (ACBC) inhibited most severely the activity of ACC oxidase from carnation petals. ACBC acted as a competitive inhibitor with the Ki of 20-30 microM. The comparison between the Km for ACC and the Ki for ACBC indicated that ACBC had an affinity which was ca. 5-fold higher than that of ACC. Whereas ACC inactivated carnation ACC oxidase in a time-dependent manner during incubation, ACBC did not cause the inactivation of the enzyme. Preliminary experiments showed that ACBC and its N-substituted derivatives delayed the onset of senescence in cut carnation flowers.

Nonadrenergic contractile response of guinea pig portal vein to electrical field stimulation mimics response to UTP but not to ATP.

Transmural electrical field stimulation (EFS, 4-32 Hz) produced a biphasic contractile response consisting of a rapid and transient contraction (first phase) followed by a slow contraction (second phase) in ring preparations of guinea pig portal veins. Both contractions were enhanced by the nitric oxide synthase inhibitor N(G)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME, 30 microM). In the presence of L-NAME, tetrodotoxin (1 microM) and guanethidine (3 microM) inhibited both contractions and phentolamine (10 microM), and reserpine treatment abolished the first-phase contraction without affecting the second-phase contraction. These results suggest that the first-phase contraction is caused by norepinephrine released from the perivascular nerves. In the presence of phentolamine and L-NAME, the second-phase contraction was inhibited by the nonselective P2-purinoceptor antagonist suramin (30-300 microM) and the P(2Y)-purinoceptor antagonist reactive blue 2 (RB2; 10-100 microM). alpha,beta-Methylene-adenosine triphosphate (alpha,beta-mATP; 3-30 microM), which desensitizes P(2X)-purinoceptors, and the P(2X)-purinoceptor antagonist 4,4'-diisothiocyanatostilbene-2,2'-disulphonate (DIDS; 1-10 microM) had a little effect. Exogenous ATP (0.1-3 mM) and UTP (0.1-3 mM) in the presence of L-NAME produced contractions in a concentration-dependent manner. The ATP-induced contraction was enhanced by suramin, RB2, and DIDS but unaltered by alpha,beta-mATP. The UTP-induced contraction was inhibited by suramin and RB2 but unaltered by alpha,beta-mATP and DIDS. These results indicate that in the guinea pig portal vein, the classic P(2X)-purinoceptors do not contribute to the nonadrenergic component of sympathetic neurotransmission. Furthermore, the pharmacology of the nonadrenergic component of neurotransmission resembles that of vasoconstrictor responses to exogenous UTP rather than to ATP.

Pemphigus IgG induces expression of urokinase plasminogen activator receptor on the cell surface of cultured keratinocytes.

We previously found that the binding of pemphigus IgG to desmogleins caused marked activation of phospholipase C, a transient increase in inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate production, and a concomitant increase in the intracellular calcium concentration in DJM-1 cells, a squamous cell carcinoma line. The binding of pemphigus IgG to cell membranes increased the activity of urokinase plasminogen activator in culture medium and induced subsequent cell-cell detachment in DJM-1 cells. Because urokinase plasminogen activator activates the conversion of plasminogen to plasmin by binding to urokinase plasminogen activator receptor evading inhibitors in serum, it is likely that plasmin is generated only in microenvironments adjacent to urokinase plasminogen activator receptor on the cell surface. It is not known whether pemphigus IgG causes acantholysis by inducing urokinase plasminogen activator receptor expression on the cell surface and secreting urokinase plasminogen activator in inhibitor-rich environments. We examined the effects of pemphigus IgG on urokinase plasminogen activator receptor expression in DJM-1 cells and normal keratinocytes by immunoblot analysis and immunofluorescence microscopy using antibodies to urokinase plasminogen activator receptor. IgG were obtained from serum samples from eight patients with bullous pemphigoid, five patients with pemphigus vulgaris, seven patients with pemphigus foliaceus, and eight normal subjects. Pemphigus vulgaris and pemphigus foliaceus IgG significantly increased the urokinase plasminogen activator receptor expression on the surface of DJM-1 cells and normal keratinocytes after 3- and 7-d incubation compared with normal IgG. These results suggest that enhanced urokinase plasminogen activator activity and urokinase plasminogen activator receptor expression activates plasmin in the limited cell surface of pemphigus IgG-bound keratinocytes and may contribute to the pathogenesis of differential acantholysis in pemphigus vulgaris and pemphigus foliaceus.

Bus hijacking by a pre-schizophrenic: from a viewpoint of criminal romance.

There are cases in which no clear symptoms of schizophrenia are observed in a person at the time of a crime but are diagnosed to have schizophrenia after the crime due to the appearance of typical symptoms. We present psychiatric evidence of a patient who saw a bus hijacking incident on TV during several years of isolation at home after graduation from junior high school, and was then determined to hijack a bus, and carried out the crime 6 months later. The patient exhibited clear symptoms of schizophrenia 3 days after the crime. This case of a crime committed before the appearance of clear symptoms of schizophrenia was evaluated from the viewpoint of verbrecherromantik or 'criminal romance'.

Effects of NKH477, a forskolin derivative, and dibutyryl-cyclic AMP on adrenal catecholamine release in response to splanchnic nerve stimulation, acetylcholine, DMPP and muscarine in anesthetized dogs.

The effects of NKH477, a water-soluble forskolin derivative, and dibutyryl-cyclic adenosine monophosphate (dbcAMP) on the release of adrenal catecholamines (CAs) in response to splanchnic nerve stimulation (SNS), acetylcholine (ACh), the nicotinic receptor stimulant 1,1-dimethyl-4-phenyl-piperazinium iodide (DMPP) and muscarine were examined in anesthetized dogs. NKH477, dbcAMP and the cholinergic agonists were infused and injected, respectively, into the adrenal gland intra-arterially. SNS (3 Hz) or injections of ACh (3 micrograms), DMPP (2 micrograms) and muscarine (2 micrograms) produced increases in CA output determined from adrenal venous blood. Both NKH477 infusion (0.3, 1 and 3 micrograms/min) and dbcAMP infusion (0.1, 0.3 and 1 mg/min) caused dose-dependent enhancement of the SNS-, ACh- and DMPP-induced increases in CA output, whereas they failed to affect the muscarine-induced increases in CA output. Neither NKH477 nor dbcAMP affected basal CA output. Cyclic AMP (cAMP) overflow determined from adrenal venous blood increased during NKH477 infusion. These results indicate that NKH477 and dbcAMP have facilitatory effects on adrenal CA release mediated by nicotinic receptors, but not by muscarinic receptors in the dog, and suggest the selective action of cAMP on nicotinic mechanism.

Clinical evaluation of the serodiagnostic value of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for Rhodococcus equi infection in foals.

An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for detection of serum IgG antibodies against Tween 20-extracted antigen of strain ATCC 6939 was applied in Hidaka, Japan to a total of 752 sick foals showing a variety of signs of infectious disease. An optical density (OD) value of more than 0.3 was tentatively fixed to be positive on the basis of readings made of healthy horse sera in previous studies. During a 2 year study, 138 of the 752 sick foals showed an OD value of 0.3 or higher and were designated as 'suspected of R. equi infection'. Age distribution during the initial medical examination of the 138 seropositive foals was significant in that most (64%) foals were age 31-60 days, with a sharp decrease in subjects beyond that age. Of the 138 foals suspected of having R. equi infection, 34 foals (25%) showed OD values of over 0.9 at the initial medical examination, in addition to high blood leucocyte counts and serum fibrinogen and alpha-globulin values. The infectious foals had been treated with antibiotics just before and after serodiagnosis and 126 foals (91%) recovered from the disease. However, no clinical improvement was observed in 12 foals (9%). At necropsy, these foals revealed suppurative pneumonia and lymphadenitis of gut associated lymph nodes accompanied by abdominal abscesses. All isolates from the pulmonary and abdominal abscesses revealed R. equi. These results suggest that OD readings in the high range are associated with severe disseminated infection with R. equi.

Nonpeptide mimic of bradykinin with long-acting properties at the bradykinin B2 receptor.

Kinins, members of a family of peptides released from kininogens by the action of kallikreins, exhibit a variety of biological activities including vasodilation, increased vascular permeability, contraction of smooth muscle cells, and activation of sensory neurons. However, investigation of the physiological actions of kinins has been greatly hampered because its effects are curtailed by rapid proteolysis in blood, lung, and liver. We describe the pharmacological characteristics of a novel nonpeptide bradykinin receptor agonist FR190997 (8-[2,6-dichloro-3-[N-[(E)-4-(N-methylcarbamoyl)cinnamidoacetyl ]-N-methylamino]benzyloxy]-2-methyl-4-(2-pyridylmethoxy)quinoli ne). FR190997 markedly stimulated phosphatidylinositol hydrolysis in Chinese hamster ovary cells permanently expressing the human bradykinin B2 receptor. The response of phosphatidylinositol hydrolysis was antagonized by the B2 receptor selective antagonist Hoe 140 (D-Arg-[hydroxyproline3,beta-thienylalanine4,D-Tic7,++ +Oic8]bradykinin). In competitive experiments using membranes prepared from Chinese hamster ovary cells expressing the human bradykinin receptor subtypes, FR190997 showed a high affinity binding to the B2 receptor with IC50 value of 5.3 nM and no binding affinity for the B1 receptor. In vivo, FR190997 mimics the biological action of bradykinin and induces hypotensive responses in rats with prolonged duration. Therefore, FR190997 is a highly potent and subtype-selective nonpeptide agonist which displays high intrinsic activity. This compound should represent a powerful tool for further investigation of the physiology and pathophysiology of bradykinin receptors.

The N-terminal region of hepatitis C virus-encoded NS5A is important for NS4A-dependent phosphorylation.

We previously showed that two proteins, a 56-kDa protein (p56) and a 58-kDa protein (p58), are produced from the hepatitis C virus (HCV) nonstructural 5A region (NS5A) and that the production of p58 is enhanced by the presence of NS4A (T. Kaneko, Y. Tanji, S. Satoh, M. Hijikata, S. Asabe, K. Kimura, and K. Shimotohno, Biochem. Biophys. Res. Commun. 205:320-326, 1994). Both proteins have phosphorylated serine residues, some of which are located in the C-terminal region. In p58, phosphorylation of serine residues in the central region of HCV NS5A is important for production of p58 in an NS4A-dependent manner. To clarify the mechanism of NS5A phosphorylation, in particular phosphorylation in the central region, phosphorylation of deleted and mutated forms of NS5A was analyzed using a transient protein production system in cultured cells in the presence or absence of NS4A. Association of the NS5A region from amino acids 2135 to 2139 with NS4A was important for NS4A-dependent phosphorylation of NS5A.

Role of cytosolic Ca2+ and protein kinase C in developing myogenic contraction in isolated rat small arteries.

Cytosolic Ca2+ and protein kinase C (PKC) may regulate the myogenic contraction of arterial myocytes. The role of these second messengers is examined in skeletal muscle small arteries, which have strong myogenic activity, and mesenteric small arteries, which have weak myogenic activity. The vessels were isolated and cannulated. The inner diameter was measured with a video-digitizing system. Cytosolic Ca2+ concentration was assessed by fura 2. Skeletal muscle small arteries dilated from 122 +/- 6 to 153 +/- 6 microm immediately after the transmural pressure change from 40 to 100 mmHg and constricted to 121 +/- 5 microm (myogenic contraction) with an increase in the 340/380 fluorescence ratio (by approximately 33%) in control vessels. Nifedipine abolished myogenic contraction and the increase in the fluorescence ratio. PKC inhibitors (H7 and staurosporine) abolished myogenic contraction but did not depress the increase in the fluorescence ratio. In mesenteric small arteries, myogenic contraction was insignificant in control vessels. A relatively low dose of PKC activator (4.4 +/- 1.4 nmol/l) elicited myogenic contraction, but a higher dose (21 +/- 6 nmol/l) depressed it. Thus the cytosolic Ca2+ increase and PKC activity may cooperatively act on the myogenic contraction of skeletal muscle small arteries. The activity of PKC should play an important role in myogenic contraction of rat small arteries.
