Six-year follow-up of the first Waterloo school smoking prevention trial.

This paper reports six-year follow-up data from the first large-scale randomized trial of the social influences approach to smoking prevention. In 1979, 22 schools were randomly assigned to program or control conditions. Students in program schools received a social influences curriculum in six core and two maintenance sessions in grade 6, two booster sessions in grade 7, and one booster session in grade 8. All students were assessed at pretest (T1), immediate posttest (T2), end of grade 6 (T3), beginning and end of grade 7 (T4 and T5), end of grade 8 (T6), and grades 11 and 12 (T7 and T8). Ninety percent of study students were relocated and data obtained from over 80 percent of them at T8. Program effects on experimental smoking observed in grades 7 and 8 had completely decayed by T8, six years after the beginning of the program. Grade 6 smoking experience and social risk were each strong predictors of T8 smoking behavior. Subjects who had left school were smoking at more than twice the rate of subjects still in high school (grade 12) at T8. We discuss implications of the results.

A 38 kDa nuclear protein is involved in the retention of an antisense oligonucleotide directed against cytosolic phospholipase A2.

Recent studies suggest that antisense phosphorothioate oligonucleotides (APO) are useful tools not only to impair gene expression, but also to modify the splicing of pre-mRNA, as the classical view that they act by suppressing the translation of mature mRNA has been challenged by several examples showing their nuclear site of action. In this work we show that an APO directed against cytosolic phospholipase A2 (cPLA2) mRNA localises in the nucleus and interacts with a specific nuclear protein.

Control of intestinal helminths in schoolchildren in Low-Napo, Ecuador: impact of a two-year chemotherapy program.

A school-based control program of intestinal helminths was undertaken among schoolchildren in the Low-Napo region, north-eastern Ecuador. Forty-eight percent of children were infected with one or more helminths at the first examination. The prevalence at the baseline was Ascaris 33.2% followed by hookworm 24.1% and Trichuris 6.5%. Sex was found to be a significant factor influencing the prevalence of hookworm and Trichuris. Prevalence was compared 9 months and 18 months after treatment. After 9 months, Ascaris and Trichuris prevalence had decreased but not hookworm. All of them increased after 18 months. The findings suggest that only a course of mebendazol had a minor effect on the control of helminth infections.

Social environment and smoking initiation.

This paper reports exploratory research to predict smoking initiation prospectively as a function of both personal (peer and family) and more macro (school and community) social environment. At the macro level, older peer smoking by school system and school board by school system were significant predictors of smoking onset. At the personal level, the effect of gender varied with time. Males began to smoke earlier than females, but females had higher onset rates in the period from the end of Grade 7 to the end of Grade 9. Significant sibling and peer influences replicate the consistent findings in the smoking initiation area. Implications for the longitudinal study of the smoking onset process are given.

[Anastomotic stenoses correlated with the use of mechanical staplers in the surgery of esophageal cancer].

From 1990 to 1995, 187 patients underwent esophagectomy and esophagogastrostomy with the anastomosis performed inside the chest using a circular stapler. Twenty-three patients (12.3%) developed an anastomotic stricture. The incidence of anastomotic stricture was inversely related to the diameter of the stapler. Also concomitant cardiovascular diseases, morpho-functional disorders of the tubulized stomach (possible related to duodeno-gastric reflux) and neoadjuvant chemotherapy were recognized as significant risks factors. Endoscopic dilations were safe and effective in the treatment of anastomotic strictures.
