The majority of hairy cells from three patients with leukaemic reticuloendotheliosis were adherent cells bearing surface immunoglobulin, complement receptors, and Fc receptors. Highly purified populations of malignant hairy cells, which readily bound soluble antigen-antibody complexes in suspension and were able to adhere to immobilized antigen-antibody complexes, were examined for their ability to mediate ADCC. Two patients with greater than 90% FcR positive cells failed to mediate ADCC. When initially examined, a third patient, with fewer malignant cells, demonstrated a less marked impairment of cytolysis. When reexamined at a later date, this patient had an increased number of hairy cells and concomitantly demonstrated more impaired ADCC effector cell activity. Absorption of surface immunoglobulin bearing cells onto plastic surfaces coated with goat anti-human immunoglobulin resulted in a complete depletion of FcR, sIg positive, hairy cells. The remaining nonadherent fraction, containing 5.5% FcR positive, sIg negative cells, was able to mediate ADCC as effectively as the normal controls. These results indicate that although FcR bearing hairy cells readily bind soluble antigen-antibody complexes and adhere to immobilized complexes, they were unable to mediate ADCC.
A growing number of drugs, including a number of alkylating agents, have been implicated as the cause of pulmonary diseases. A patient with chronic myelogenous leukemia presented with typical cytology, biopsy, and roentgenologic findings of lung toxicity after only six weeks of therapy with busulfan. There was subsequent clearing. A similar roentgenologic change also occurred after administration of uracil mustard. This has not been reported previously.

Auditory brainstem potentials were recorded from scalp electrodes in 42 infants ranging in gestational age from 25 to 44 weeks. The latencies of the various potential components decreased with maturation. Wave V, evoked by 65-dB sensation level clicks, changed in latency from 9.9 msec at 26 weeks of gestation of 6.9 msec at 40 weeks of gestation. Central conduction times in the auditory pathway also decreased with maturation from 7.2 msec at 26 weeks to 5.2 msec at 40 weeks. The effects of brainstem and cochlear disorders on auditory brainstem potentials were noted in several abnormal infants. The application of all of these techniques could permit an objective definition of both normal and abnormal sensory processes in newborn infants.

We review 107 consecutive cases of pemphigus. The mortality for pemphigus vulgaris and pemphigus vegetans was 46% between 1949 and 1959 and 24% between 1960 and 1970. The overall mortality for all types of pemphigus was 32%. In the corticosteroid era, complications of therapy were the most frequent causes of death. Mortality and morbidity closely correlated with the corticosteroid dosage used to attain control. This dosage proved to be variable and could not be predicted at the outset in any given patient.

This report presents a workable model for a support system for first-year women medical students at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. The students met in small groups at weekly intervals with women faculty members from the Department of Psychiatry throughout the academic year. Role conflicts which confront these young women professionals entering a "masculine" field as a minority group are described. There is an elaboration of those factors, both personal and institutional, which serve either to promote or deter conflict resolution and the acquisition of a satisfactory professional and female identity. A discussion of group formation and processes and a year-end evaluation are included. Both students and faculty assessed the program as having provided a needed and constructive setting in which to explore the problems and identities of women professionals and to develop close supportive relationships with women colleagues.
This paper describes an experimental clinical approach to the problem child and his family, in which parents are trained to provide corrective social interaction experiences for the child. Negative interaction patterns are modified by teaching specific techniques of expressing warmth. Results of a pilot study indicate the technique is effective in working with immature and antisocial children who are hospitalized.
We have reported six individuals (five certain heterozygotes for cleido-cranial-dysostosis and one possible heterozygote) who have unusual EEG findings, consisting of very large responses to photic flash stimulation at very low stimulus rates. Such visual responses are extremely rare and have not been seen before in the experience of an EEG department over 12 years and they were not seen in 98 control subjects. It is likely that these responses are an irregular manifestation of the gene for cleido-cranial-dysplasia, and that the responses are independent of skull deformity. One importance of these responses is their demonstration in neurologically normal individuals for previously such large responses have only been reported in association with neurolipidosis. They may have neurophysiological significance in that they may reflect an unusual balance between inhibitory and excitatory mechanisms in the nervous system.
