Chronological endocrine changes accompanying various diseases in the hypothalamo-pituitary region (183 cases) were collectively studied by evaluating both endocrinological symptoms and anterior pituitary functions, with the following results : 1) Endocrine disorders following the operation, trauma and subarachnoideal hemorrhage in the pituitary-diencephalic region varied in the order of a) subclinical, b) clinical and c) paradoxical. This trend was especially marked in young cases of pituitary adenoma and of craniopharyngioma. 2) In young patients, the secretion of anterior pituitary hormones was markedly improved, particularly, TSH showed hypersecretion. The clinical symptom, however, remained unimproved. 3) The alteration associated with the adhesion of pituitary-diencephalic region was significant for the endodrine disorders. Such alteration was observed at 2--6 months after traumatic subarachnoideal hemorrhage. 4) The endocrine disorder developed and exacerbated in 6 months to 2 years after radio therapy of the pituitary-diencephalic region. 5) For the estimation of recurrence of tumors in the pituitary-diencephalic region endocrinological assessment was very useful.

The localization of 169Yb, 67Ga and 111In in tumor tissues was determined macroautoradiographically. 169Yb-citrate and 111In-citrate were injected intravenously to the rats subcutaneously transplanted Yoshida sarcoma and were injected intraperitoneally to the mice subcutaneously transplanted Ehrlich tumor. These animals were sacrificed 3, 24 and 48 hours after injection. These tumor tissues were frozen in n-hexane (-70 degrees C) cooled with dry ice-acetone. After this, these frozen tumor tissues were cut into serial thin sections (10 micron) in the cryostat (-20 degrees C). One of the slice of these sections was then placed on X-ray film and this film was developed after exposure of several days. On the other hand, next slice of these sections were then stained using the hematoxylin and eosin. From the observations of these autoradiogram and H-E stained slice, the following results were obtained. Concentration of 169Yb, 67Ga and 111In was predominant in viable tumor tissue rather than in necrotic tumor tissue, regardless of time after the administration. 67Ga and 111In were distributed uniformly in viable tumor tissue, but deposition of 169Yb was observed more avidly in viabl tumor tissue neighboring to necrotic tumor.

Serial macroautoradiograms were obtained to determine the distribution of 203Hg-chlormerodrin, 203Hg-nigrate and 99mTc-DMSA in kidney. In the study, normal rats were used and these three radiopharmaceuticals were injected intravenously. Initial images of 203Hg-chlormerodrin showed the accumulation in the outer cortex, but no significant radioactivity in the medullary. On the other hand, delayed images revealed radioactivity shifting in concentration from the outer cortex to the inner cortex. Distribution pattern of 203Hg-nitrate was similar to that of 203Hg-chlormerodrin. In contrast to 203Hg-chlormerodrin and 203Hg-nitrate, 99mTc-DMSA was retained in the outer cortex without temporal changes in the distribution.

Intracranial aneurysm rarely causes endocrinopathy clinically, however, many laboratory data show abnormality concerning endocrine function. To elucidate the reasons of these endocrine dysfunction, the authors investigated several representative patients in our department and the reported cases. The major part of reported cases suggests that the direct kinetic effect of aneurysms on the hypothalamopituitary system resulted in the endocrinopathy. The common features are described as follows. 1) Aneurysm were of large size. 2) Most aneurysms were located at the intracranial internal carotid artery. 3) They had no previous history of SAH usually. 4) Visual impairment was one of the common manifestation among them. 5) The higher frequency of the reported pituitary dysfunction in laboratory examination was shown in the following turn. However, some of our cases did not always agree with the reported ones. SAH operation etc. were considered to be the reasons of this discrepancy.

Blood flow velocities (BFVs) of the middle cerebral artery were measured by transcranial Doppler blood flowmeter in 2 patients with childhood absence epilepsy; a total of 8 absence seizures were recorded. BFV began to decrease 7-9 sec after the appearance of diffuse bilateral 3 Hz spike-and-wave bursts on electroencephalography, reaching the trough 0-8 sec after the disappearance of spike-and-wave bursts which was followed by BFV recovery with rebound phenomenon. BFV then returned to the pre-ictal value within 1 min after the seizure ended. Pulsatility index increased in accordance with BFV decrease.
In order to facilitate computerized quantitative analysis of digital chest radiographs, an automated method for accurate delineation of posterior ribs in frontal chest images is being developed. This method is based on an analysis of vertical profiles in the lung regions and a statistical analysis of edge gradients and their orientations in small selected regions-of-interest (ROIs). A shift-variant function is fitted to vertical profiles to obtain initial estimates of locations of rib edges. Rib edges are then determined more accurately by analyzing cumulative edge gradients and their orientations in small ROIs that are located adjacent to the initially estimated edges. The present computerized method can achieve a good agreement between the detected and the actual rib structures for posterior ribs in 74% of 50 cases examined. This suggests that automated detection of posterior ribs by a computerized method is feasible, and may be useful for computer-aided diagnostic schemes in the chest.
