Giant cell formation in small cell carcinoma of the lung.

Four patients with biopsy proven small cell carcinoma of the lung died rapidly following radiotherapy. At autopsy areas of prominent tumor giant cell formation were found at the primary site in all four and in the metastatic sites in three. Giant cell formation in a tumor may be from the development of another tumor, sublethal damage to the original tumor cells or presence of the two components from the outset. The light and electron microscopic appearances of the giant tumor cells and their existence in the nonradiated sites in our cases suggest that small cell carcinoma, as adenocarcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas, may be associated with giant cell carcinoma-like components.

Genetic control of platelet glutaminase: a twin study.

The extent of genetic determination of platelet glutaminase was evaluated by sampling 13 monozygotic and 11 dizygotic adult male twin pairs. Intraclass correlation coefficients of 0.96 for monozygotic and 0.53 for dizygotic twins together with high heritability estimates indicate a strong genetic component.

Blood Platelets↗

Correlation between MAO activity in blood platelets obtained by single and multiple centrifugations.

Monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity in human blood platelets isolated by a single centrifugation at 600g for 2 1/2 minutes, which isolates only 45-65% of total platelets, was highly correlated with the MAO activity in platelets isolated by a method which isolates essentially 100% of platelets (r = 0.95, p less than 0.01). These results indicate that the single centrifugation method, which isolates only a portion of platelets, gives a reliable estimate of MAO activity in the entire platelet population.

Effect of chlorpromazine treatment on monoamine oxidase activity in platelets isolated by the Corash method.

The effect of chlorpromazine treatment on platelet monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity was compared in platelets isolated by the Corash method, which harvests essentially all the platelets in a blood sample, and a single centrifugation method, which yields 45-65% of the platelets. A highly significant decrease in platelet MAO activity following chlorpromazine was found in platelets obtained from the same subjects by both methods. The decrease observed by the two methods was significantly correlated. These results indicate the degree of decrease in MAO activity associated with chlorpromazine is not due to isolation of a subpopulation of platelets with low MAO activity by the single centrifugation method.

Platelet monoamine oxidase. I: Effect of temperature, anticoagulant, and centrifugation technique.

Platelet yield and monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity per platelet in platelets obtained by the method of Corash, which isolates essentially all platelets from whole blood, and by a single differential centrifugation of whole blood, were compared. Platelets recovered by one spin in a swinging bucket rotor appeared to be a homogeneous population containing a reliable representation of the platelet population obtained by the Corash method since the MAO specific activity yielded by the two methods was not significantly different. The effect of the anticoagulant, temperature, and type of rotor on platelet recovery from blood and MAO activity/platelet were also studied. The MAO and plasma amine oxidaze (PAO) activities obtained from blood anticoagulated with ethylenediaminetetracetate (EDTA) were significantly greater than those found when acid-citrate-dextrose was the anticoagulant. Blood centrifuged in a swinging bucket rotor at room temperature yielded 80-90% of total platelets as compared to the 45-65% recovered with a fixed-angle rotor at 0-4 C. The most efficient method of platelet isolation was found to be a 2 1/2-min room-temperature spin at 600 X g with a swinging bucket rotor using EDTA as anticoagulant.

Distribution of C3 phenotypes in North India: a pilot study.

The commonly occurring phenotypes and some rare variants of C3 were studied in a North Indian population. Based on known gene frequencies, the Indian population seemed more akin to Mongol, African, and Afghan populations than to Caucasians.

Structural transformation and modulation of succinic dehydrogenase activity in the mitochondria of germinating seeds.

Ultrastructural transformation of mitochondria in the cotyledons of dry and germinating seeds of Vigna sinensis from the 'orthodox' to 'condensed' forms is coupled with an increasing rise in the specific activity of succinic dehydrogenase (SDH). Apparently, the transformation of mitochondria to the 'condensed' form associated with the utilization of substrate which is reflected in the rise in enzyme activity. During the process of germination, the mitochondria of the cotyledonary cells undergo three different phases namely, (1) activation phase, (2) preparatory phase, and (3) multiplication phase.
