[Application of heat pads in hyperthermia treatment of malignant skin tumors].

The application of a heat pad in the hyperthermia treatment of malignant skin tumors was examined. The temperature on the skin surface, and at a depth of 1 mm and 2 mm became 42C, 41C and 40C respectively, and was maintained for 4 hours. Two patients were treated with the heat pad alone, four were treated in combination with radiotherapy and one patient each with Pepleomycin injection and Bleomycin ointment. Irrespective of the above methods used, the heat pad was effective.

Effects of combined oral contraceptive steroids on pituitary-ovarian function during the menstrual cycle of lactating women.

The object of this study was to investigate the effects of combined oral contraceptives on pituitary-ovarian function during the menstrual cycle of lactating women whose prolactin levels were usually elevated. Five of six lactating women studied were considered to have the normal menstrual cycle which was comparable to the presumptive ovulatory cycle of non-puerperal women. The patterns of serum LH and FSH as well as estradiol and progesterone during the menstrual cycle of lactating women were quantitatively and qualitatively, similar to those of non-puerperal women. Prolactin levels, however, were elevated throughout the cycle of lactating women as compared with those of non-puerperal women. Treatment with combined oral contraceptive steroids abolished a midcycle surge of LH and decreased ovarian steroids during the menstrual cycle of lactating women. Serum prolactin levels were also decreased throughout the cycle treated with contraceptives in lactating women.

The effect of combined oral contraceptive steroids on the gonadotropin responses to LH-RH in lactating women with regular menstrual cycles resumed.

The effect of combined oral contraceptive steroids upon pituitary response to stimulation with 100 micrograms LH-RH was studied in both non-puerperal and lactating women with regular menstrual cycles. Serum prolactin concentration was 14.20 ng/ml in non-puerperal women whereas it was 39.37 ng/ml in lactating women. A comparability was shown in the LH response to LH-RH in non-puerperal women and lactating women. FSH response to LH-RH, however, was significantly exaggerated in lactating-menstruating women as compared to that of non-puerperal women. Combined oral contraceptive steroids lowered basal levels of LH and FSH in non-puerperal women and lactating women although the difference was not statistically significant in non-puerperal women. The LH and FSH maximal responses to LH-RH were significantly diminished in both non-puerperal and lactating women on combined oral contraceptives. There was, however, no difference in the mean LH or FSH responses between non-puerperal women and lactating women. Combined oral contraceptive steroids used in this study seemed to suppress ovulation by decreasing the pituitary responsiveness to LH-RH in lactating-menstruating women as well as in normally menstruating women.

[Clinical usefulness of lymphoscintigraphy by rectal submucosal injection of radioactive colloid].

Lymphoscintigraphies about 27 cases were examined by the methods of 11 cases of anal subcutaneous and 17 cases of rectal submucosal injections of 99mTc-rhenium colloid. Para-aortic nodes and common iliac nodes were visualized in more than 70% out of the 27 cases by these methods, and those images were superior to images obtained by the conventional methods with pedal subcutaneous injections. Internal iliac nodes were visualized in 78.1% by the rectal injection method while in 27.3% by the anal injection method. It was concluded that the transrectal injection method should be used to visualize internal iliac nodes. Examination efficacies of lymphoscintigraphies by these methods on detection of lymph nodes metastases which were confirmed by autopsy, operation, contrast lymphoangiography and/or X-ray CT. As for 131 regions of rectal and anal injected cases, sensitivity was calculated at 84.0% and specificity was at 89.6%. When the cases in which more than one definite defect was detected were scintigraphycally diagnosed as positive to metastasis and when calculated case by case, sensitivity was calculated at 90.9% and specificity was at 62.5% in the 27 cases. Lymphatic systems were seen specifically and systematically by using lymphoscintigraphies. Though the sensitivity was not enough for a screening test of lymph node metastases and the specificity was not enough for a test to rule out lymph node metastases, lymphoscintigraphies are clinically very useful as supplementary examinations. The lymphoscintigraphy by the method of rectal submucosal injection is much more useful as it is convenient and is the only one method to visualize the internal iliac nodes systematically.

The effect of antifungal agents on pancreatic and gastric secretion in rats.

This study was designed to investigate the effects of griseofulvin, 5-fluorocytosine (5-FC), and amphotericin B on pancreatic and gastric secretion after the administration of a single large dose, or repeated small doses for 3 weeks, in male albino rats. The exocrine functions of the main digestive glands were only slightly affected by griseofulvin and were not affected by 5-FC. In contrast, a single large dose of amphotericin B caused a marked inhibition of exocrine functions of the main digestive glands. The rats treated with 5-FC lost body weight markedly during 2 weeks of administration.
