Scald burns complicated by isopropyl alcohol intoxication. A case of fatal child abuse.

Scald burns are the most common type of thermal injury in child abuse. Death associated with nonaccidental burns, however, is uncommon. We recently investigated the case of a 4-year-old child who died from extensive body burns due to scalding. A contributory cause of death was isopropyl alcohol intoxication resulting from application of this chemical to the burns.

Research on heterocyclic compounds. XIX--2-Methylimidazo[1,2-a]pyridine-3-acetic acids.

A group of methyl substituted imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine-3-acetic acids was synthesized by reaction of some methyl derivatives of 2-aminopyridine with ethyl 3-bromolevulinate and subsequent hydrolysis. These new acidic compounds were tested for their antiinflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic and ulcerogenic activities in order to compare the results with those previously obtained with similar compounds.

Organ tolerance of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs: effect on liver cells.

Experimental studies in mice and in rats showed the good tolerance of a new non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, flunoxaprofen, by normal and CCl4 damaged liver. The activity of an enzyme-inducing drug, such as phenobarbital, showed a greater increase after pretreatment with indomethacin than with flunoxaprofen or benoxaprofen. High doses of benoxaprofen and indomethacin significantly decreased bromosulphonphthalein excretion in rats with normal or CCl4 damaged liver; the effect was not observed with flunoxaprofen administered at the same dose as benoxaprofen. Moreover, benoxaprofen and indomethacin but not flunoxaprofen induced a significant increase of some serum liver enzymes in CCl4 poisoned rats.

Haemopoietic tissue in Perinereis cultrifera Grübe: cytological identification and observations after treatment with lead.

A perivascular tissue made up of two different types of cells (one with a slightly basophilic cytoplasm and many Fe+++ ions, the other with haemopigments) has been demonstrated in Perinereis cultrifera Grübe by means of histochemical and cytochemical techniques. These two types of cells probably cooperate in the production of the respiratory pigment. Treatment with lead nitrate (0.02 ppm) for up to a maximum of five days caused a progressive cytological alteration with inhibition of haemoglobin synthesis.

[Echographic diagnosis of neuroblastoma in children].

Ultrasounds have a high diagnostic value mainly in the structural assessment of the neoplasia. They are also very useful for the evaluation of the spread. In this paper the authors analyze the criteria for a differentiated diagnosis of Wilms' tumour.

[Comparative study of echotomography and percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography in the diagnosis of obstructive jaundice].

The authors compare the results of sonography (US) and percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography (PTC) in the study of 48 patients with obstructive jaundice. The results obtained were correlated to various diagnostic levels and to the different causes of obstruction. The analysis of the results led the authors to believe that, in most cases, the association of both techniques is absolutely necessary in order to define the whole diagnostic picture.
