[Bluetongue: isolation and characterization of the virus and identification of vectors in northeastern Argentina].

To establish if BTV was circulating in Argentina, 94 bovines from the Santo Tomé and Ituzaingó Departments of Corrientes Province were sampled every 30-60 days during 14 months. Red blood cells from those animals that showed seroconvertion with a c-ELISA were processed for virus isolation by inoculation in embryonated chicken eggs and cell cultures. Cells with CPE were positive by direct and indirect immunofluorescence with BTV specific reagents. These samples examined by electron microscopy showed virus particles with BTV morphological characteristics. Blood samples and tissue culture supernantants were positive by RT-PCR technique with primers corresponding to the segment 3 of the BTV genome. Haematophagous insects were captured in one farm using light traps and Culicoides insignis Lutz was the predominant species detected. This is the first isolation of BTV in Argentina from northeastern bovines without any disease symptom.

Topical nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in uncomplicated cataract surgery: effect of sodium naproxen.

PURPOSE: To investigate whether topical nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are useful, in the absence of concomitant corticosteroid therapy, in limiting postoperative inflammation after uncomplicated cataract surgery. METHODS: A total of 328 patients were enrolled in a prospective, randomized, double-masked, parallel-group, active-controlled study. Anterior chamber inflammation (ACI) was evaluated as the primary efficacy parameter. Only patients with moderate inflammation (ACI score of < or =4) the day after surgery were randomized and treated with NSAIDs. A novel topical formulation containing 0.2% sodium naproxen was compared with 0.1% diclofenac. Both were administered three times a day for 14 consecutive days. Ocular inflammation was measured after 7 and 14 days by using slit-lamp biomicroscopy. Safety parameters were also evaluated at the same time. RESULTS: Both treatments were equally effective in controlling postsurgical inflammation. No statistically significant differences between treatment groups were observed for the safety variables. No serious adverse events (AEs) occurred during the course of the study. The most frequent AE reported with naproxen was eye redness. CONCLUSIONS: NSAIDs can effectively be used without concurrent administration of corticosteroids to control postoperative inflammation after uncomplicated cataract surgery. In addition, naproxen ophthalmic solution may be considered a suitable alternative to the currently available NSAIDs.

[Visual communication in the prevention of cross infection: study performed at the intensive care unit of the Evangélic Hospital on Londrina].

The influence of posters with illustrations, instructions, and appeals for hand-washing was evaluated in terms of their effect on the frequency of occurrence this procedure, before the contact with the patients, in the Intensive Therapy Unit of the Hospital Evangélico, Londrina, Paraná, Brazil. The influence of posters was statistically significant on the frequency of hand-washing by physicians, trained-nurses and laboratory technicians, but not in respect to physical-therapists, or blood-bank and X-ray technicians.

Further studies on acid phosphatase in obese subjects.

Low activity genetic variants of acid phosphatase (ACP1) are positively associated with extreme body mass deviations in obese subjects. The same pattern has been found in non-diabetic children, in diabetic pregnant women, and in non-diabetic adult subjects. Low activity variants of ACP1 also show a positive association with family history of obesity, supporting the hypothesis of an enhancing action of these variants on expressivity of obesity.

3,5-Diphenyl-1H-pyrazole derivatives. III--Esters from 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-3,5-diphenyl-1H-pyrazole and its 4-bromo derivative with hypotensive, depressant, antiarrhythmic and analgesic activities.

The synthesis of dialkylaminoalkyl ethers (III a-g) by reaction of 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-3,5-diphenyl-1H-pyrazole (I) sodium salt with a series of omega-chloroalkyldialkylamines is described. Cyanoethylation of alcohol (I) and its 4-bromo derivative (II) gave 2-cyanoethyl ethers (III h, i), one of which (III h) was hydrolyzed to the corresponding carboxylic acid. Cyanoethylation of 3,5-diphenylpyrazole (IV) and its 4-bromo derivative (V) yielded nitriles (VI) and (VII), respectively, which were hydrolyzed to the corresponding carboxylic acids (VIII) and (IX). Some of the above compounds showed considerable hypotensive, depressant, antiarrhythmic and analgesic activities in mice and rats, as well as a remarkable platelet antiaggregating activity in vitro. Moreover, the above compounds usually exhibited a moderate antiinflammatory activity in rats and infiltration anesthesia in mice.

[The effect of plasma nitriding on tungsten burs].

The authors have experimented the nitriding's effects on some cilindrical burs carbide utilized in dentistry after disamination on the applications methodics on plasma nitriding in neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery and in odontotherapy. This reacherys point out that nitriding plasma a durings increase and cutis greater capacity establish.
