Nurse educators'/administrators' ways of handling conflict.

Using women's standpoint research to analyze the data, a qualitative, retrospective case study was undertaken to study the group process among 27 female nurse educators/administrators who met from 1987 to 1990. The group was engaged in making major changes to integrate nursing education programs from a variety of institutions. Part of the research involved studying the group's conflict-handling strategies. These strategies were compared and contrasted with strategies found in traditional, feminist, and nursing management literature. In the traditional management literature, five conflict-handling modes are described: competing, compromising, avoiding, integrating, and accommodating. Although the research results indicated similarities between the conflict-handling modes used by the group studied and those reported in the research literature, there also were significant differences. One unique strategy identified was not competing. Competing as a strategy was rejected. Compromising and avoiding were used frequently by the group. Integrating, the most efficacious strategy, was used to resolve only two issues, whereas accommodating was not identified as an obvious strategy, although two aspects of it were apparent. One conclusion is that conflict management theories based on men's behavior do not adequately explain nurses' (women's) conflict management behavior. This study suggests that nurse educators/administrators may have a distinct approach to conflict management that has not been recognized.

Effect of fascial closure technique on strength of healing abdominal incision in the dog. A biomechanical study.

Load-deformation data were used to determine the strength of healing abdominal incisions in dogs at 7, 14, and 21 days after wounding. The breaking energy of paramedian incisions closed by suturing the internal and external leaves of the sheath of the rectus abdominis muscle vs. incisions closed by suturing the external leaf only was similar in the 12 dogs studied. Closure of abdominal incisions by suturing only the external leaf of the rectus sheath provided wound strength comparable to the traditional method.

Securing methods for peripheral cannulae.

The use of a sterile transparent dressing (Venigard, Consolidated Medical Equipment, London) was compared to the use of a non-sterile tape (Mefix, Molnlycke, Sweden) for securing peripheral cannulae in paediatric patients. Children from all medical specialties were prospectively randomised into one of two groups. The failure of a cannula (defined as the removal of the cannula before treatment was completed) was plotted against duration in each of the two groups. Statistical tests (life table analysis) suggested no significant difference (p = > 0.05). The authors conclude that the use of a sterile transparent dressing secures peripheral cannula as effectively as non-sterile tape.

Alberta RN demographics.

In 2000 more than one-quarter of the Alberta RN labour force was older than 50 years of age, while close to one-half was between 36 and 50 years of age. While this age distribution denotes a mature RN cadre, with considerable valuable practice experience, it also signals a need for an increased number of new RN graduates to replace those soon to be retiring. Although possibly age-related, the proportion of Alberta RNs working regular full-time is less than half--only 45 per cent. Concomitantly, more than half of all Alberta RNs are employed casually and part-time. Especially in a time of RN shortage, reasons for such limited full-time employment warrant examination. As in the past, three-quarters of Alberta RNs work in institutional settings--hospitals and nursing homes--while only eight per cent work in community health. The shift to health promotion and disease prevention has yet to happen in Alberta. In 2000, almost 80 per cent of all Alberta RNs were employed in direct care giving, and less than 10 per cent were employed in management, administration and education. In 2000, almost two-thirds of all Alberta RNs held a diploma in nursing. Of the slightly more than 8,000 Alberta RNs with a baccalaureate degree, the overwhelming majority--85 per cent--worked in direct patient care, and only 13 per cent were employed in administration and teaching. Increasingly, we can expect to see more RNs with baccalaureate degrees at the bedside, in part because of the recent significant shift toward new graduates entering practice with a degree. Since 1997, the number of new RNs entering practice with a degree has been four times greater than the number entering with a diploma. Increased government funding of degree nursing programs aimed at alleviating the current nursing shortage means this trend will continue.

Adoption of children with developmental disabilities.

United Methodist Family Services of Virginia placed 41 developmentally disabled children in adoptive homes between August 1985 and June 1988, representing a range of chronic emotional, intellectual, and physical disabilities. This article describes the need for specialized adoption programs for children with developmental disabilities and the methods used in placing these children. The obstacles to adoption of children with developmental disabilities are also discussed.

Modification of adenylate cyclase by photoaffinity analogs of forskolin.

Photoaffinity labeling analogs of the adenylate cyclase activator forskolin (PF) have been synthesized, purified and tested for their effect on preparations of membrane-bound, Lubrol solubilized and forskolin affinity-purified adenylate cyclase (AC). All analogs of forskolin significantly activated AC. However, in the presence of 0.1 to 0.3 microM forskolin, the less active forskolin photoaffinity probes at 100 microM caused inhibition. This inhibition was dose-dependent for PF, suggesting that PF may complete with F for the same binding site(s). After cross-linking [125I]PF-M (see Figure 1 for structure) to either membrane or Lubrol-solubilized AC preparations by photolysis, a radiolabeled 100-110 kDa protein band was observed after autoradiography following SDS-PAGE. F at 100 microM blocked the photoradiolabeling of this protein. Radioiodination of forskolin-affinity purified AC showed several protein bands on autoradiogram, however, only one band (Mr = 100-110 kDa) was specifically labeled by [125I]PF-M following photolysis. The photoaffinity-labeled protein of 100-110 kDa of AC preparation of rat adipocyte may be the catalytic unit of adenylate cyclase of rat adipocyte itself as supported by the facts that [a] no other AC-regulatory proteins are known to be of this size, [b] the catalytic unit of bovine brain enzyme is in the same range and [c] this PF specifically stimulates AC activity when assayed alone, and weekly inhibits forskolin-activation of cyclase. These studies indicate that radiolabeled PF probes may be useful for photolabeling and detecting the catalytic unit of adenylate cyclase.

The significance of the extracellular matrix in intracranial aneurysms.

To what extent might change sin the extracellular matrix proteins in intracranial aneurysms (IA) or parent artery (PA) wall contribute to enlargement? Using IA specimens obtained from the coroner's office, the wall structure by light (Trichrome and Actin stains) and immunofluorescent microscopy (IF) (collagen I and fibronectin) have been studied in 18 specimens. It is well known that IA only arise when there is a deficiency in the internal elastic membrane and some breakdown in the media. The results show a normal three layer structure of intima, media, (muscularis), and adventitia in the PA extending out into the neck of the aneurysm. Immunofluorescent stains (IS) show collagen I and fibronectin limited to the adventitia and muscularis, respectively, of the PA and control arteries. The enlarging IA wall shows almost complete loss of this architecture. By IF stain, collagen I and fibronectin are intermingled throughout the IA wall. It is postulated that loss of structure and the confining muscularis layer permit easier elastic enlargement from a more or less homogeneous wall structure.

In conflict with conflict.

In a qualitative, retrospective case study to identify, describe, and develop a theoretical analysis of perceived group process among female nursing educators/administrators, the term "conflict," as traditionally defined in discussions of "conflict management strategies," was rejected. The term did not readily fit with the management styles of the 27 female nurse educators and administrators. Participants rejected "conflict" as a term. The word was deliberately avoided. In fact, conflict rejection was a specific administrative process identified as part of the successful working of the group over the three-year period studied. This finding indicates a break with traditional male-oriented literature and therefore may have implications for future research into conflict management strategies, especially into successful management strategies used by women and health care professionals.
