Parotid salivary secretion in diabetic autonomic neuropathy.

Parotid salivary flow rates and amylase concentrations were measured in three groups of eight subjects each (normal control, non-neuropathic diabetic, and neuropathic diabetic). Flow rates were significantly reduced in neuropathic diabetic patients as compared with normal controls (p less than 0.001) and non-neuropathic diabetic patients (p less than 0.02). Amylase concentrations were similar. These data are consistent with parasympathetic denervation of the parotid gland in diabetic neuropathy and provide evidence for a widespread distribution of autonomic denervation in diabetes.

The investigation of major salivary gland agenesis: a case report.

Salivary gland agenesis is an extremely uncommon congenital anomaly, which may cause a profound xerostomia in children. The oral sequelae includes dental caries, candidosis, and ascending sialadenitits. The present report details a child with rampant dental caries secondary to xerostomia. Despite having oral disease for many years, the congenital absence of all the salivary glands failed to be established until early adulthood. The appropriate investigation and management of the xerostomic child allows a definitive diagnosis to be made and attention focused on the prevention and treatment of resultant oral disease.

Enamel hypoplasia secondary to candidiasis endocrinopathy syndrome: case report.

The clinical features of a 7-year-old girl with enamel hypoplasia secondary to autoimmune hypoparathyroidism and chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis are detailed. The combination of features are typical of a rare, probably genetically determined immunodeficiency termed candidiasis endocrinopathy syndrome (CES). Affected individuals have chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis and a spectrum of autoimmune endocrinopathies, including hypoparathyroidism, adrenocortical hypofunction, and diabetes mellitus. Treatment includes long-term management of the candidal infection and correction of any associated endocrinopathy.
