The formation of a stable complex between dissociated proteoglycan and hyaluronic acid in the absence of a link protein.

A proteoglycan fraction prepared from bovine articular cartilage under dissociative conditions was shown to interact with three purified hyaluronic acid preparations to form stable complexes in the analytical ultracentrifuge. It is concluded from these experiments that, although link proteins are associated with hyaluronic acid and proteoglycans in complexes between these macromolecular constituents.

Clinical recognition of leprosy: some factors leading to delays in diagnosis.

The case histories of eight patients in the United Kingdom admitted to hospital for the diagnosis of leprosy are examined in detail. Review of their early symptoms and signs showed that there had been delays in diagnosis, ranging from a few months to many years. Possible reasons for delay are discussed, and attention is called to the importance of nasal symptoms in the early diagnosis of lepromatous leprosy.

Aspiration biopsy findings in amyloid tumor of the cervical vertebra. A case report.

BACKGROUND: The differential diagnosis of destructive lytic lesions of the spine includes amyloid tumors. The diagnosis of amyloid tumor with fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNA) is challenging. Previous reports of FNA of osseous amyloid tumors have detailed the cytologic appearance of amyloid along with lymphocytes, plasma cells and histiocytes, occasionally multinucleate or forming granulomatous lesions. CASE: An 84-year-old man presented with neck pain. Radiologic studies showed a destructive, lytic lesion of C-6, with a large, soft tissue mass. FNA yielded many acellular smears containing abundant amyloid that was confirmed with special stains of corresponding tissue cores and subsequent surgical biopsies. CONCLUSION: Osseous amyloid tumors are destructive, lytic lesions that mimic other processes. Amyloid can be distinguished from other substances in FNA samples and amyloid tumor identified, even when amyloid is present without typical cellular components.

Transcranial Doppler measurement of middle cerebral artery blood flow velocity: a validation study.

Measurement of intracranial arterial blood flow velocity is a new technique with potentially a number of very useful applications. This study validates the technique by comparing it to cerebral blood flow (CBF) measured using intravenous Xenon133 and extracranial clearance recording. We have measured the middle cerebral artery (MCA) blood flow velocity in 17 symptomatic patients with the EME TC 264 transcranial Doppler velocimeter and compared these measurements to the ipsilateral hemispheric cerebral blood flow measured with an intravenous Xenon133 technique (Novo Cerebrograph 10A). Measurements were made at rest and during hypercapnia. The absolute measurement of MCA velocity and hemispheric CBF showed a poor correlation (r = 0.424, p less than 0.01) due to wide between-patient variations at rest but the blood flow response to hypercapnia, expressed as a reactivity index, showed a good correlation (r = 0.849, p less than 0.001). Thus changes in MCA velocity reliably correlate with changes in cerebral blood flow but the absolute velocity cannot be used as an indicator of CBF.

Estrogen receptors are identified in the glioblastoma cell line U138MG.

OBJECTIVE: The antiestrogen tamoxifen has been found to be effective in decreasing glioblastoma cell proliferation, but the mechanism underlying this effect and whether it is through the estrogen receptor (ER) is controversial. The objective of this study was to determine whether ERs are present in three human glioblastoma cell lines--HS683, U138MG, and JHN J889H--using the most sensitive techniques available. METHODS: Ligand binding and flow cytometry were employed to identify estrogen and progesterone receptors. The reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction was used to identify ER mRNA, and a novel reporter gene transfection assay demonstrated that the ER was capable of activating gene transcription. RESULTS: U138MG glioblastoma cells contain ERs that are capable of increasing gene transcription in response to estradiol. No ERs were found in HS683 or JHN J889H cells. CONCLUSION: Tamoxifen may be acting through the ER in some glioblastoma cells.

Efficacy of hypothermia and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation in podiatric surgery.

At Harrison County Hospital in Corydon, Indiana, hypothermia and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulators (TENS) have greatly decreased the use of postoperative analgesics and narcotics in controlling postoperative pain. There was a significant reduction in ecchymosis and edema of the foot and ankle as well as postoperative pain under the program used at this hospital.
