Studies on the mechanism of the changes in serum and liver gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase activity. I. Experimental extrahepatic cholestasis in rabbits.

Serum, liver and renal gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) activities were studied in four groups of rabbits: controls, rabbits with obstructive extrahepatic cholestasis, rabbits with obstructive anuria, and animals with combined obstructive extrahepatic cholestasis and obstructive anuria. Serum GGT was essentially increased in rabbits with obstructive extrahepatic cholestasis, showing peak values in the combined cholestasis + obstructive anuria group, and practically normal values in animals with anuria. Liver GGT was increased in both cholestasis groups, but the increase was less prominent than the increase in serum GGT and there was no correlation between them. In both anuric groups renal GGT was reduced, probably as a result of inhibited enzyme synthesis secondary to the altered conditions for adequate renal function. The results obtained are suggestive of a probable renal involvement in the formation of the serum GGT activity level.

[Histological and histochemical studies of knee joint cartilage in human embryos].

The authors examined some age and topographic peculiarities in the occurrence and microscopic characteristics of glucosamineglycanes, glycogen, lipids, calcium compounds and collagenous fibres during the course of the embryonal development of man. The deposition of glycogen and lipids in chondroblasts after the third-fourth week of embryonal development was indicated as well as the appearance of glucosamineglycanes in the intercellular substance during the same period. The role of the same substances in the differentiation of the cartilaginous tissue was stressed. The authors pointed out the well manifested PAS-reactivity of the superficial layer of the periosteum as a typical peculiarity of this formation.

Chemical composition and antibacterial activity of Brazilian propolis.

Four samples of Brazilian propolis were investigated by GC/MS of different fractions. 32 volatile compounds, (10 of them new for propolis), as well as 12 more polar compounds (one of them new for propolis) were identified. Antibacterial activity was found in some propolis fractions.

Aldehydes↗

Antibacterial diterpenic acids from Brazilian propolis.

Four labdane-type diterpenic acids and syringaldehyde were isolated and identified from Brazilian propolis. All the compounds exhibit antibacterial activity. The diterpenes, found for the first time in propolis, are typical for some Araucaria species and thus indicate a possible plant source of Brazilian propolis.

Phytochemical evidence for the plant origin of Brazilian propolis from São Paulo state.

Propolis and plant secretions from three species, most frequently mentioned as botanical sources of the bee glue in Brazil (Baccharis dracunculifolia, Araucaria angustifolia and Eucalyptus citriodora) have been investigated using GC-MS. Based on chemical evidence, B. dracunculifolia was shown to be the main propolis source in São Paulo state. The antibacterial and antifungal activities of all four materials were also tested, the most active being propolis and Baccharis leaf exudate.

Antiinfluenza virus effect of extracts from marine algae and invertebrates.

Sixty products, derived from marine organisms, typical of the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, were examined for inhibitory activity on the reproduction of influenza viruses in tissue cultures. The antiviral effect was investigated by the reduction of virus infectivity. Using representative strains of influenza virus it was shown that apparently the inhibitory effect was strain-specific. The most effective products were further studied in fertile hen's eggs and in experimental influenza infection in white mice.
