A clinical variant of chancroid resembling granuloma inguinale.

Sixteen patients with nonsyphilitic genital ulcerations had the clinical features of granuloma inguinale. Biopsy specimens and Wright's-stained tissue crush preparations obtained from all patients failed to demonstrate Donovan bodies. Herpes simplex virus was absent in cultures obtained from 11 patients. However, when techniques for culturing Hemophilus ducreyi became available in the latter part of the study, this organism was isolated from seven of eight consecutively studied patients. The pathologic process, therefore, represents a variant of chancroid having the clinical features of granuloma inguinale. Without the widespread availability of culture techniques for isolating H ducreyi, diagnostic uncertainty between these two diseases may occur.

Whole coal tar shampoo: a therapeutic hair repair system.

An alkaline whole coal tar shampoo has been clinically re-evaluated for its therapeutic and cosmetic properties. Its efficacy, as anticipated, is confirmed in psoriasis, dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, and pruritus. Scanning electron microscopy reveals the whole coal tar shampoo's ability to repair hair similar to protein cosmetic shampoos. Body, luster, and manageability improved throughout this eight week study. A new shampoo action was recorded, described as "corrective;" both oily-haired and dry-haired persons simultaneously exhibit substantial improvement towards the norm. It is postulated that the alkaline-whole coal tar shampoo stimulates natural corrective mechanisms.

Acute pancreatitis associated with long-term azathioprine therapy. Occurrence in a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus.

A 34-year-old woman with a 13-year history of systemic lupus erythematosus had been taking azathioprine (lmuran) for one year in an effort to control her cutaneous lesions and also as a steroid sparing agent. Acute pancreatitis developed, which we could not relate to her lupus, prednisone administration, viral illness, or other causes. We concluded it was due to azathioprine therapy and wish to report this unusual occurrence.

Old drug--in a new system--revisited.

Sodium sulfacetamide, penetrating antibacterial, in combination with hydrocortisone and sulfur, has enjoyed twenty years of remarkable safety, with outstanding efficacy and patient acceptance, in the prescription treatment of pustular acne and severe, refractory seborrheic dermatitis. Recently, this combination has been reported to be highly effective concomitant therapy for perioral dermatitis. Almost paradoxically, it achieves these desired goals without the excessive erythema and discomforting irritation associated with retinoic acid and benzoyl peroxide.
