A 43-year-old non-cirrhotic woman suffered from encephalopathy caused by an extrahepatic portosystemic shunt between the ileal vein and inferior vena cava via the right gonadal vein. Percutaneous transcatheter embolization with stainless steel coils was performed by the retrograde systemic venous approach. Encephalopathy improved dramatically.

Renal failure due to cholesterol embolization following percutaneous transluminal renal angioplasty.

Percutaneous transluminal renal angioplasty was performed in a 63-year-old diabetic woman who had renovascular hypertension with solitary functioning kidney and diffuse atherosclerosis. Angioplasty was technically successful, while thereafter, fever and myalgia of legs occurred with gradual increases in blood urea nitrogen and creatinine. The patient became uremic over a month after angioplasty and was placed on dialysis. She died six months after angioplasty. Autopsy revealed cholesterol embolization in bilateral kidney, pancreas and spleen, causing subacute renal failure. It is suggested that careful assessment of the patient should be made when determining the need for renal angioplasty for renovascular hypertension with a solitary functioning kidney.

Recent trends in viral hepatitis among Japanese children.

The prevalence of viral hepatitis in Japan were very high as peak HBsAg positive rate of 2-3% and HBsAb positive rate of 25% of peoples born in the 1930th and 1940th. But recently in Japan hepatitis A has completely eradicated and hepatitis B and C were seldom seen in our pediatric clinics. Many strategies were done beginning from sterilized water service to introduction of HCV-Ab screening system for blood transfusion in 1989. Many efforts had combined to get final success. The historical views of epidemics of viral hepatitis and maneuvers to improve were introduced here.

Growth inhibition of mouse skin tumor by serine protease inhibitor ONO-3403.

The new serine protease inhibitor, ONO-3403 is an analog of FOY-305 (Foypan). The IC50s values of ONO-3403 toward serine proteases, such as trypsin, plasmin, kallikrein and thrombin are much lower than that of FOY-305. To investigate the growth-suppressing effect of ONO-3403 on 3-methylcholanthrene-induced autochthonous solid tumors in mice, ONO-3403 was intraperitoneally administered to mice at a dose of 4 mg/kg twice a day for 5 weeks. All seven mice receiving the drug had a solitary tumor and showed potent growth suppression (p<0.001) without any apparent side effects such as hair loss and body weight loss. The results suggest that ONO-3403 may be useful for the treatment of squamous cell carcinoma.
