The present article describes the results of observations of 11 lesions in 8 cases of roentgenographically occult in situ or microinvasive squamous cell carcinoma with a size of 4 X 4 mm or less which were detected by detailed histologic investigations of 59 cases of occult bronchogenic carcinoma. The 59 cases were discovered mainly by mass screening for the detection of early lung cancers using chest x-ray combining sputum cytology for heavy smokers. The resected specimens were processed with the method of serial block sectioning. All the serial blocks of these minimal carcinomas were observed in detail to confirm the presence or absence of carcinoma and of morphological changes of the bronchial epithelium contiguous to carcinoma. Adjacent to carcinoma, there were normal bronchial epithelium in three lesions, squamous metaplasia with marked atypia in four, basal cell hyperplasia in two, and markedly atypical basal cells without hyperplasia in two. An inference on histogenesis of bronchogenic squamous cell carcinoma was drawn from the detailed observations as follows: (1) A carcinoma develops in the area of squamous metaplasia with marked atypia; (2) A carcinoma arises from markedly atypical basal cells with or without prior hyperplasia. Even in such small-sized carcinomas, there is a difference in type of invasion within the bronchial wall. One is the creeping type which shows a marked horizontal growth and the other is the penetrating type which shows a marked downward growth.

The bone marrow of an 11-year-old girl with cyclic neutropenia was examined by electron microscopy. In the nonneutropenic phase, mature polymorphonuclear neutrophils had numerous bundles of filamentous inclusions in both cytoplasms and nucleus. Primary granules were slightly increased in number. Similar filament-like inclusions also have been reported in some cases of hemopoietic dysplasia; however, our case showed no abnormality in chromosomes, no thrombocytopenia, and no leukemic change.
A 65-year-old man underwent left-upper lobectomy for large cell carcinoma of the lung on November 8, 1984 (pT1N0M0: Stage I a). He was treated with MMC, Futraful, CDDP and CPM as adjuvant chemotherapy. In April 1985, he was re-admitted to our hospital because of progressive dyspnea. He was diagnosed as having drug-induced interstitial pneumonia, and so steroid therapy was started. In July 1985, he suffered from anemia, thrombocytopenia, proteinuria and azotemia progressively, and died due to pulmonary hemorrhage and edema. At necropsy, no cancer recurrence was found. It thus seemed that the cause of death was microangiopathic hemolytic anemia and renal failure induced by anti-neoplastic agents.

This is the first report to identify 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline and 1-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline as endogenous amines from non-treated rat brain. The detection was performed by coupled gas chromatography - multiple ion detection, using heptafluorobutyric anhydride and pentafluoropropionic anhydride as derivatizing reagents. These amines might be endogenous substances inducing parkinsonism.

There are two possible mechanisms of effects of large electric fields on animals, one caused by the electric field at the body surface and the other caused by the electric current induced inside the body. The purpose of the present experiments was to investigate the former possibility by recording action potentials from afferent fibers innervating various sensory receptors in the cat's hindlimb. Cat hairs were attracted to the upper electrode when exposed to DC electric fields of 180 kV/m or greater, and action potentials were evoked in the afferent fibers innervating G1, G2, and down hair receptors. No action potentials were evoked in afferent fibers innervating type I, type II, field receptors, muscle spindles, or joint receptors. These results indicate that a strong DC electric field induced movement of the hairs, eventually evoked excitation of the hair receptors, but that other receptors located under the skin were not influenced by electric field exposure.
We report a case of bladder agenesis with anal atresia, left renal agenesis, left ovarian agenesis and renal tubular acidosis.
Ultrasonographic examination was performed in 70 healthy neonates and infants using a real-time sector scanner array machine with a 7.5-MHz transducer and a 4 cm waterbag. The skin, subcutaneous tissue, dura mater, interhemispheric fissure, gyri, sulci and sagittal sinus could be clearly visualized on ultrasonography (US), and the distance from the dura mater to the brain surface was determined. The extracerebral space under the anterior fontanel increased until 3 months after birth, and decreased gradually from 3 months to 12 months. The width and structure of the extracerebral space seen on US can be useful as parameters for assessing the process of brain growth and for detecting extra- and intracerebral pathologies in neonates and infants.
F1-ATPase is the major enzyme for ATP synthesis, and its beta subunit is the catalytic site. To date, no full-length cDNA for the eukaryotic F1 gene has been reported. Human F1 was studied because of its importance in medicine and cell biology. Here we report molecular cloning of a full-length cDNA for the human F1 beta subunit and purification of the human F1 beta subunit. The HeLa cell cDNA library constructed in an expression vector gamma gt11 was screened with antiserum against the yeast F1 beta subunit. One of the positive phage DNAs containing the human F1 beta gene and its flanking regions (1.8 kilobase pairs) was sequenced by the dideoxy chain termination method. The open reading frame started from a putative signal presequence, which was rich in both serine and arginine. There was a homologous segment in the signal presequence of human ornithine transcarbamoylase and that of F1 beta. The precursor of F1 beta was expressed in E. coli harboring a plasmid which had been constructed with T5 promotor and the F1 beta cDNA. Both the precursor and mature form of F1 beta were detected in HeLa cells in a pulse-chase experiment. The amino acid sequence of 480 residues (51,568.3 daltons) following the presequence was highly homologous with that of mature beef heart F1 beta (97.5%) and E. coli F1 beta (71.7%), but the codon usage in the human gene was very different from those of reported genes coding for F1 beta of other species.
A generalized transducing phage, named CP75, was derived from a lysogenic strain of Pseudomonas cepacia. The frequency of transduction per phage particle ranged from 1.0 X 10(-6) to 2.0 X 10(-6) for a given marker. About half of the 105 P. cepacia strains tested were sensitive to the phage. The molecular size of the CP75 genome was approximately 52 kb.
