The fact that members of the subclass Cyclotomata possess monomeric hemoglobin molecules has been known for some time. Electrophoresis of hemolysates from 12 hagfish (Eptatretus stoutii) revealed five hemoglobin phenotypes with four to six distinct zones of hemoglobin. Each zone is believed to represent a monomer containing one heme group on a single polypeptide chain with a molecular weight of approximately 18,000. It is postulated that these monomers are controlled by genes at four loci.
Starch-gel electrophoresis of extracts of human liver revealed the presence of a new hexose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase that was slower-moving at pH 8.6 than the sex-linked glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase. When the gel plate was stained, galactose-6-phos phate being used as a substrate, this enzyme band stained intensely, but the sex-linked glucose-6-phosphate dehydro genase failed to stain. This new human enzyme may well be homologous with the autosomally inherited glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase of the deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus), re ported by Shaw and Barto.

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase specific to the erythrocytes of each of two wild hares found in Europe was discerned by starch-gel electrophoresis at pH 7.0 and pH 8.6. The single, sharp band of the dehydrogenase of Lepus europaeus was faster than that of L. timidus, at both pH levels. The sex-linkage of this enzyme was tested through reciprocal hybrids between the two species. Each male hybrid had a single band of enzyme identical with that of its mother, while both parental types of this enzyme coexisted in female hybrids. Thus, sex-linkage of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase has been suggested not only in man and in the family Equidae, but now in the family Leporidae of placental mammals as well.

Peritoneal dissemination is the major pattern of recurrence in patients with gastric cancer. Among the 1,337 patients with gastric cancer who underwent a curative resection, a multivariate analysis showed that the independent risk factors for the occurrence of peritoneal dissemination were an undifferentiated tissue type and serosal invasion. We focus our attention on 477 patients with undifferentiated type tumor, in which the postoperative prognosis and the pattern of recurrence after curative resection were evaluated with regard to the depth of the cancerous invasion in the gastric wall. Patients with tumors limiting to the subserosal layer had a satisfactory post-operative course, with five-year survival rates of 98.5%, 97.4%, and 82.5% in patients with tumors limiting to the submucosal layer, the muscularis propria and subserosal layer, respectively. In 179 patients with tumors invading to the subserosal layer, however, the five year survival rate was only 48.2%. Seventy-one died of peritoneal dissemination, while 24 and 15 were due to hematogenous and local recurrences, respectively. Only 50 (27.9%) survived over 5 years without any recurrence.
