[A case of tuberous sclerosis associated with a pineal region tumor].

The authors report a rare case of tuberous sclerosis associated with pineal region mixed glioma. A 38-year-old woman with tuberous sclerosis, who had a past history of left nephrectomy and tumorectomy of the right kidney for bilateral renal angiomyolipomas, was admitted because of headache and ataxic gait. CT scan and cerebral angiography suggested a pineal region tumor. Suboccipital craniectomy and partial removal of the tumor was performed via infratentorial supracerebellar approach. Microscopic examination revealed mixed oligodendroglioma and astrocytoma. It is well known that tuberous sclerosis is occasionally associated with brain tumors. However, with few exceptions, these have been subependymal giant cell astrocytomas in the lateral ventricles. They seem to originate from subependymal nodules of hamartomatous nature. As far as we are aware, association of pineal region tumor with tuberous sclerosis as in this case has not been reported.

[Mixed gonadal dysgenesis with seminoma: a case report].

A case of mixed gonadal dysgenesis with anaplastic seminoma is reported. A 43-year-old, female, who was brought up as a female, was admitted to our hospital for swelling of left inguinal region. The physical examination revealed a short stature, ambiguous external genitalia but no Turner's stigmata. A child's head-sized tumor was noticed in the left inguinal region by CT scan. The histopathological diagnosis of this tumor was anaplastic seminoma. The right gonad was removed at laparotomy with lymph node dissection in the pelvis. Histological examination of right gonad revealed streak gonad and immature uterine with fallopian tube. In the Japanese literature, 7 cases including our case of mixed gonadal dysgenesis with gonadal tumor have been reported.

Effects of 4-nitroquinoline 1-oxide on the DNA-protein complex.

The effects of 4-nitroquinoline 1-oxide (4NQO), a well known carcinogenic compound, on the DNA-protein complex and DNA Folding Proteins were investigated. FM3A cells were treated with 10(-6) M or 10(-5) M 4NQO for 30 min. Treatment with the 10(-6) M concentration was confirmed to cause the sedimentation of the DNA-protein complex to become slower. DNA Folding Proteins were then isolated from 4NQO-treated and untreated control cells and analyzed by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. No appreciable differences in the amounts of the major components of DNA Folding Proteins could be found due to 4NQO-treatment, but the 92 K protein was induced in DNA-protein complex by treatment with 4NQO.

Comparative study on mucus glycoproteins in rat stomach and duodenum.

The density of mucus glycoprotein compared to that of the corpus, antrum and duodenum was; 1.52, 1.49 and 1.57 g/ml respectively. Carbohydrate composition of gastrointestinal mucus glycoprotein consisted of N-acetylgalactosamine, N-acetylglucosamine, galactose, fucose and sialic acid. Ratios of carbohydrate composition among corpus, antral and duodenal mucus glycoproteins differed. The average length of an oligosaccharide was found to be about 12-13, 14 and 10 sugars in the corpus, antrum and duodenum, respectively. In the corpus, the amino acid content was found to have the following quantitative order: Thr greater than Ser greater than Glx = Pro; in the antrum: Thr greater than Ser greater than Glx; and in the duodenum: Thr greater than Ser greater than Pro. Corpus, antral and duodenal mucus glycoproteins have the blood-group A antigen; antral mucus glycoprotein in particular exhibited strong blood-group A activity.

Gastric mucus glycoprotein in different rat strains.

The extent of gastric damage induced by aspirin was found to differ according to rat strain. The occurrence of ulcers varied, from high to low, in the following strain order: Donryu, Sprague-Dawley (SD) and Wistar. The content of corpus mucus glycoprotein was essentially the same in all the strains: about 6 mg as hexose of dry tissue. Antral mucus glycoprotein content increased in the order Wistar, SD and Donryu: 7.1, 8.3 and 9.1 mg, respectively. Gastric mucus glycoprotein carbohydrate composition was essentially the same in all three strains. The relatively low proportions of N-acetylglucosamine, galactose and sialic acid from the antrum was a characteristic feature in contrast to mucus glycoprotein from the corpus which contained a high proportion of these sugars.

Effects of aspirin on gastric mucus glycoprotein in fed and fasted rats.

Gastric lesions induced by aspirin increased the ulcer index and incidence with prolongation of fasting time. Aspirin decreased gastric mucus glycoprotein in both the corpus and antrum. However, the rate of decrease in mucus glycoprotein induced by aspirin differed according to feeding habits and the gastric region. Qualitative change in corpus mucus glycoprotein was induced by aspirin.

Effect of cimetidine on gastric mucus glycoprotein biosynthesis.

The effects of cimetidine on gastric mucus glycoprotein biosynthesis in rat gastric mucosa were investigated using organ culture technique. 2 h following oral administration of cimetidine (40 mg/kg body weight), corpus tissue was placed in the organ culture. Mucus glycoprotein synthesis was accelerated to 137% of control (p less than 0.01). In order to investigate the direct effect of cimetidine on mucus glycoprotein biosynthesis, corpus tissue was cultured in the medium containing cimetidine. 100 microM cimetidine enhanced mucus glycoprotein biosynthesis to 174% (p less than 0.01). Cimetidine was found to stimulate gastric mucus glycoprotein biosynthesis both in vivo and in vitro.

New bioptic method for submucosal tumor of the gastrointestinal tract.

Biopsy for the submucosal tumor has not been established and it is extremely rare that tumor tissues are obtained by usual biopsy forceps except in cases showing ulceration. Moreover, tumor tissues from the ulcerated site often showed degeneration or necrosis, and are difficult for pathohistological diagnosis. In addition, the biopsies are often associated with bleeding. We have developed a new biopsy method. Briefly, a small amount of pure ethanol is injected topically into the surface of submucosal tumor to produce a small ulcer for biopsy, and several days later a biopsy specimen is obtained from the exposed tumor at the ulcer bottom. We performed this method for 12 lesions in 12 cases. In 64 of 100 bioptic specimens, tumor tissue was obtained and in all cases pathohistological diagnosis could be established. We believe this method will be important to determine the indication of endoscopic treatment or surgical operation, and for follow up observation.

[Study on suppressed uptake by the liver in 67Ga scintigraphy].

During the past 3 years, we have performed 1525 studies of 67Ga scintigraphy and 38 cases of these showed suppressed liver uptake; 19 cases after chemotherapy, 13 cases with liver dysfunction and 6 cases with competitive blockade. Many cases in chemotherapy used cyclophosphamide and vincristine, and were performed 67Ga scan within 1 week after chemotherapy. In cases showed suppressed uptake by liver after chemotherapy, serum Fe was markedly increased and UIBC was markedly decreased (p less than 0.01). This suggested that serum Fe influenced suppressed uptake by liver more than carrier-protein, disturbed hepatic cells, and receptors.

Specialised contacts of endoneurial fibroblasts with macrophages in wallerian degeneration.

Wallerian degeneration was induced by crushing the mouse phrenic nerve at the neck. During a chronological study, a specialised cell contact was often observed between the activated endoneurial fibroblast and the macrophage at the period when the removal of myelin debris by macrophages was prominent in the endoneurium. The specialised contact was characterised by paired subplasmalemmal linear condensations with a relatively constant thickness and varied length. It was sometimes asymmetrical. In these specialised cell membrane areas the intercellular space was filled with fine granular material showing a midline denser stratum. Coated vesicles were occasionally found in association with the subplasmalemmal densities. The specialised contacts with these features are quite different from any type of previously described cell contact between fibroblasts but are morphologically identical to those reported between cells of the mononuclear phagocytotic system. The significance of specialised contacts between the fibroblasts and macrophages in Wallerian degeneration is discussed.

[Adrenal cyst: report of a case].

A 32-year-old woman was admitted because of a large abdominal mass in the right upper quadrant. Laboratory findings including hormonal studies were within normal ranges. CT scan and various X-ray examinations revealed a large adrenal cyst on the right side. On May 2, 1984, an adrenal cyst was removed through the right flank incision. Histological study showed that the wall of the cyst consisted of fibrous tissue with endothelial linings and dilated lymphatic vessels. Thus it was classified as a lymphangiomatous adrenal cyst.
