Diethylene glycol (DEG)-associated myocardial changes: a pilot investigation of chronic intoxication in guinea-pigs.

The myocardium of guinea pigs fed on sublethal doses of diethylene glycol (DEG) over a period of 2-11 days was examined for microscopical and ultrastructural changes. Coagulative myocytolysis and loss of myofibrils, not observed in the controls, was patchily distributed throughout the myocardium. The accompanying ultrastructural features included swelling, pleomorphism and hyperplasia of mitochondria with an associated distension of the interfibrillary spaces and a displacement, distortion and rupture of adjacent myofibrils.

Administration, Oral

[Metastizing basalioma. A case contribution].

A case of a metastasizing basal cell carcinoma that began 24 years earlier as a rodent ulcer on the back is reported. Histologically there were strands of characteristic basal cell type cells and, in addition, areas of squamous cell differentiation. The problem of "epithelioma metatypique" is discussed. The autopsy showed pure basal cell metastases in the lungs, the paraaortal lymph nodes and penetration of the tumor masses into the vena cava inferior. The unsufficient treatment by X-ray seems to be a conditioning factor by injuring the surrounding stroma.

Denudation of the urinary bladder mucosa in the cat by formaldehyde.

Chemical Stripping of the urinary bladder mucosa was studied in 38 cats using 5 to 25% formaldehyde solutions. The contact time varied from 1 to 20 min. With a 20% solution and contact time of 1 min, total denudation was possible without necrosis of subepithelial layers. In such cases, complete reepithelialisation and normal bladder dynamics were seen within 3-4 weeks after formaldehyde instillation. Signs of formaldehyde intoxication due to vesical resorption were not observed.
