Body fat and time of year interact to mediate dispersal behaviour in ground squirrels

Behaviour is often influenced by energy availability. Hibernation presents an energetic challenge to Belding's ground squirrels, Spermophilus beldingi, which depend entirely on stored energy for survival during their 8-9 month dormant period each year. Dispersal from the natal area may also place energetic demands on S. beldingi. In this study, we assessed the relationship between dispersal behaviour, body mass and body fat of juvenile male S. beldingi over 3 consecutive years, one of which had a substantially delayed juvenile active season due to heavy spring snowfall. We evaluated body fat using the non-destructive method of measuring electrical conductivity of the body. When the active season began late, acquisition of body mass and body fat were accelerated, and dispersal behaviour was inhibited. These results suggest that the ontogeny of mass and fat gain in juvenile male S. beldingi is influenced by a seasonal time-keeping mechanism. Energy allocation was hierarchical in S. beldingi, with pre-hibernation fattening taking precedence over dispersal. Physiological signals reflecting body fat content appear to interact with an endogenous timing mechanism in this species to regulate the dispersal behaviour of juvenile males.\C 1998 The Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour Copyright 1998 The Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour Copyright 1998 The Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour.

[Characterization of leukocytes, lymphocytes and lymphocyte subsets in eating disorders].

Mental anorexia patients have severe denutrition and high cortisol levels. Nervous bulimia presents a particular psychic profile. The aim of this study was to evaluate lymphocyte population in eating disorders in order to understand the effect of these disturbances on immune system. We have found that patients with mental anorexia or bulimia present a significant decrease of leucocytes, lymphocytes, CD2 and CD4. Patients with post-anorexia bulimia have no significant variants. There is no difference between mental anorexia and nervous bulimia. There is a tendential variation between mental anorexia and controls in relation to CD45Ra. Considering the similar patterns of immune disturbance in anorexia and bulimia it looks like a dominance of neuroimmune network over malnutrition. Naive cells are particularly sensitive to malnutrition.

Circulating prolactin in free-living California ground squirrels (Spermophilus beecheyi).

During a long-term field study of a free-living population of California ground squirrels (Spermophilus beecheyi), blood samples were drawn at regular intervals from marked animals via femoral venipuncture, and plasma prolactin (PRL) was measured by homologous radioimmunoassay. Marked fluctuations with season and reproductive condition occurred in circulating PRL levels in both males and females, with peak levels occurring during the spring breeding season. Peak PRL levels in females were reached 4 weeks after peak male levels, but mean peak values did not differ significantly between the sexes. Among females, juveniles had lower mean PRL levels than adults, and yearlings had lower mean levels throughout their initial reproductive episodes than did older females.

Patterns of progesterone secretion in free-living California ground squirrels (Spermophilus beecheyi).

During a long-term field study of a free-living population of California ground squirrels (Spermophilus beecheyi), blood samples were drawn at regular intervals from marked females via femoral venipuncture, and plasma progesterone (P) and prolactin (PRL) were measured by radioimmunoassay. Marked fluctuations with season and reproductive condition occurred in circulating levels of both hormones, with peak levels occurring during the spring breeding season. Two peaks in P concentrations were observed each spring, the first occurring during pregnancy, and the second during lactation. Peak PRL levels in females were also reached during the lactation interval, midway between the two P peaks. Analysis of repeated measures from individual females showed a marked decline in circulating P around the time of parturition. Juveniles had lower mean P levels than adults, and yearlings had lower peak levels during their initial reproductive episodes than older females did. The observed pattern of P secretion in S. beecheyi differs from that known for most mammals, but resembles those reported for other ground-dwelling sciurid rodents.
