Xeroradiography is the recording of radiologic images by a photoelectric process rather than the photochemical one used in conventional radiography. In order to investigate the advantages and disadvantages of xeroradiography in the orthodontic field, minimum xeroradiologic exposure conditions for skull projections, Schüller's and oblique temporomandibular joint projections, and hand projections were established by thirteen examiners and the relationship between the image production and x-ray radiation was discussed in comparison with related findings obtained with conventional film techniques. The advantages of xeroradiograph were finer and clear images caused by the "edge effect" and wide latitude of xeroradiography; the main hazard was the unavoidable larger skin dose required by the projection procedures. The skin doses with xeroradiography were 2.4 to 16.2 times larger than those with conventional film techniques.

IgG and IgM were stripped from the surface of human B lymphocytes using heterologous anti-IgG or IgM antisera. The percent SIg (surface Ig) determined by fluorescence for SIgM was reduced from 55% to 20%, or a reduction of 64%. Upon stripping SIgM, the B lymphocytes were no longer killed by seven different cold cytotoxic antibodies obtained from kidney transplant patients. We conclude that SIgM is the target of cold cytotoxins. These cold cytotoxic antibodies are postulated to be immunoregulatory antibodies. They are less specific than anti-idiotypic antibodies.

The three-dimensional ultrastructure of the TMJ disk of two normal rhesus monkeys was investigated using the SEM. The upper and under surface of the TMJ disk consists of a close network of delicate collagen fibrils. On the undersurface, they have an undulating configuration, with the elevations running in one direction. On the upper surface, irregular and gentle waves can be observed. The matrix of the TMJ disk is composed of two main parts: one is the collagen fibrils that run in a sagittal direction making up the central fibrous core, and the other consists of the collagen fibrils that enclose the fibrous core. The collagen fibrils running in a sagittal direction show a wavy, winding appearance, and these structures are more numerous on the side of the TMJ disk facing the condyle. It is concluded that the wavy, winding structure and undulated configuration of the collagen fibers results in an elastic quality, opposes stress, and functions to absorb shock.

Five phenotypes related to the ABH-Lewis substances were defined by the B-cell lymphocytotoxic test. These five antigens are built up in a stepwise fashion by the action of the glycosyl transferases specified by the Le, H, and the A, B genes onto the same ABO percursor molecules. The comparison of their chemical structures with the cluster analysis obtained by cytotoxicity suggests that antibodies reacting with large antigenic structures (pentasaccharides) have a more restricted specificity than antibodies reacting only with smaller antigenic determinants (trisaccharides).
