Rhinosporidiosis of vagina: a case report.

This is a case report of a 60 year old woman with Rhinosporidiosis of vagina. The female genital tract is an extremely rare site for Rhinosporidiosis. The exact mode of transmission is not known.

Serum myoglobin in patients on intermittent and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis.

Serum myoglobin levels were determined in patients maintained on chronic peritoneal dialysis. Eleven intermittent peritoneal dialysis patients had a mean serum myoglobin of 174 +/- 29 ng/ml. In 7 patients tested serially, there was no consistent change in serum myoglobin: the mean level was 154 +/- 36 ng/ml pre-dialysis and 170 +/- 20 ng/ml post-dialysis. Seventeen patients on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis had a mean serum myoglobin of 215 +/- 18 ng/ml. Two patients given oral carnitine supplements had a substantial decrease in their serum myoglobin levels. Patients on peritoneal dialysis, like those on hemodialysis, tend to have elevated serum myoglobin levels, and neither form of dialysis affects serum myoglobin concentration. This hypermyoglobinemia may be due to metabolic changes in muscle.

Calcium, calmodulin, and protein content of adriamycin-resistant and -sensitive murine leukemic cells.

Anticalmodulin and calcium channel blockers have been shown to reverse Adriamycin resistance by reducing the drug efflux from resistant cells. Since cellular calcium and calmodulin levels are probably related to these effects, we have measured the total, membrane-bound, and intracellular calcium levels in Adriamycin-resistant (P388/R) and -sensitive (P388/S) leukemia cells. In P388/R cells, total calcium was approximately 1.4-fold higher than that of P388/S cells. Membrane-bound and intracellular calcium levels were also higher in P388/R cells. No major difference was observed in the calmodulin content of these cells. The P388/R cells had a higher (approximately 1.4-fold) protein content. When calculated on the basis of per unit protein, P388/S and P388/R cells had similar total calcium but a higher intracellular free calcium and calmodulin content in P388/S cells. Thus our studies suggested that the lower drug efflux and increased drug retention in P388/R cells may not be related to calcium and calmodulin levels but may be due to some other membrane-related factors.

Cardiac output determination: thermodilution versus a new computerized Fick method.

A computerized system is described for the on-line analysis of respiratory flow, complete analysis of inspired and expired gas, and computation of oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production. The system has been compared to traditional Douglas bag determinations of these quantities. Fick cardiac output using computed oxygen consumption (VO2) was highly correlated (r = .92, p less than .001) with thermodilution cardiac output, determined simultaneously. Moreover, the computerized Fick method was much more reproducible.

Formation of mutagens in beef and beef extract during cooking.

Mutagens, distinguishable from benzo[a]pyrene and from mutagenic amino acid and protein pyrolysis products, are formed when ground beef is cooked in a home hamburger cooking appliance or when beef stock is concentrated, by boiling, to a paste known commercially as beef extract. "Well-done" hamburgers contain about 0.14 part per million of the mutagens, and beef bouillon cubes which contain beef extract about 0.1 part per million. Since such mutagens may be potentially carcionogenic and are formed during ordinary cooking procedures, their occurrence raises questions about possible risks to human health.

Isolation of mutagens from bacterial nutrients containing beef extract.

The enhanced rate of mutation of Salmonella strain TA1538 (Ames) by microsomes results from the presence of about 2--5 ppm of microsome-activatable mutagens in bacterial nutrient broths that contain beef extract. Since mutagens toward Salmonella are likely to be carcinogenic, the data have significant implications for the problem of carcinogenesis.
