[Experimental Candida infection in mice due to intracerebral contamination].

Candida infection caused by intracerebral administration of collection and clinical strains of C. albicans was studied on 1000 albino mice. The infecting doses ranged from 5 X 10(6) to 200 X 10(6) cells. Developing infection might be characterized as Candida encephalomeningitis complicated by generalized candidiasis. Acute purulent inflammations in the tissues of the brain, kidneys and myocardium developing at early periods after the infection were replaced by granulomatous reaction and fibroplastic processes. Generalization of the infection was confirmed by C. albicans isolation from blood and internal organs. Development of multiple microabscesses in the brain tissue and early severe affections in the kidneys and myocardium were a pathomorphological characteristics of the infectious process due to administration of a clinical virulent strain of C. albicans to the brain. Intracerebral administration of various C. albicans strains to mice provided their differentiation by the virulent properties.

[Staphylococcal necrotic suppurative encephalomeningitis in mice as a chemotherapeutic model].

Staphylococcal infection caused by intracerebral inoculation with a highly virulent strain of Staph.aureus was studied on 1410 albino mice. The inoculation doses ranged within 1,5 . 10(6)--1 . 10(9) microbial cells. It was found that the infection was characterized by the development of generalized necrotic purulent encephalomeningitis. Extensive necrotic areas in the brain tissue and formation of abscesses were the main features of the process. Purulent affection of the encephali mater was of a focal or diffuse nature. Osteomyelitic foci in the ossa cranii at the inoculation site were detected in 50 per cent of the animals. Generalization of the infection after intracerebral inoculation of the mice with Staph.aureus was confirmed by isolation of the staphylococci from the blood and internal organs of the animals at early stages of the infection, i.e. in 5-10 minutes and by development of purulent metastatic foci in the myocardium, kidneys and lung tissue. The chemotherapeutic effect of dioxidine (1,4-di-N-oxide 2,3-dioxy-methylquinoxaline) administered orally or subcutaneously in a single dose of 200-400 mg/kg 30 minutes after inoculation was shown on the chemotherapeutic model which is thus recommended for chemotherapeutic investigations.

[Structural changes in renal tissue in experimental staphylococcal septicopyemia].

The structure of the kidney tissue in mice with staphylococcal septicopyemia due to intraperitoneal introduction of Staph. aureus in various doses was studied. It was found that the level of acute purulent inflammation in the kidney tissue was different depending on the site of the affection: the purulent component predominated in the cortical layer, while the necrotic component in the medullary layer and papillae. The most gross changes in the glomerular filter developed in the presence of a swarm of staphylococci and deposition of electron-dense material in the basal capillary layers. It is noted that the study on the ultrastructural changes in the kidney tissue makes it possible to use them for estimation of highly active antibacterial agents.

[Experimental meningoencephalitis in mice caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae as a chemotherapeutic model].

The possibility of reproducing meningoencephalitis caused by Kl. Pneumoniae was studied on 1070 albino mice. The infection development was estimated by the clinical picture of the disease, survival of the animals, bacteriological and pathomorphological examination of the brain and internal organs. For reproduction of meningoencephalitis with the lethal outcome it is enough to use an infecting dose of 250 microbial cells. The pathomorphological changes in the brain tissue and the results of the pathogen isolation from the specimes of the brain and internal organs are described in dynamics. The role of vascular affection in the disease pathogenesis is indicated. Experimental meningoencephalitis of mice differs by its pathogenesis and pathomorphological picture from Klebsiella purulent leptomeningitis of rabbits and purulent meningoencephalitis of mice caused by Ps. aeruginosa. The model is recommended for use in the studies on the activity of chemotherapeutic drugs.

[Comparative activity of depot sulfanilamides in experimental infection in mice caused by K1. pneumoniae].

The chemotherapeutic activity of 6 sulfanilamide depots, i.e. sulfalene, sulfamonomethoxin, sulfadimethoxin, bayrena, pallidin and sulfapyridazin was studied on 890 albino mice inoculated intranasally or intraperitoneally with 51. pneumoniae, strain 444. Sulfadimesin and domian, 2 sulfanilamides of short action served as the control. The drugs were administered orally in a dose of 500 mg/kg daily for 5 days. High efficacy of the sulfanilamide depots in the treatment of the 51. pneumoniae infected mice and low activity of the short-action drugs were shown, which was confirmed by the data of the pathomorphological investigation in experimental pneumonia. Sulfalene and sulfamonomethoxin proved to be the most active. Differences in the activity of the sulfanilamide depots depending on the experimental model were found. It is recommended that the combined effect of sulfanilamide depots and antibiotics be studied on infections caused by 51. pneumoniae.

[Pathomorphological study of antiviral chemotherapeutic effectiveness of bonaphthon under experimental conditions].

A pathomorphological study of antiviral chemotherapeutic activity of benaphthon was carried out in tests involving intranasal inoculation of mice with influenza A2 (Hong Kong) 68 viruses (infection doses of 1 DL75 and 10 DL75) and of rabbits with herpetic keratitis, provoked by the herpes simplex virus (strain Ela-5699). A single prophylactic introduction of bonaphthon with subsequent 4-day treatment of experimental influenzal pneumonia of mice was found to produce a significant diminution in the frequency of the pneumonia development in experimental animals, a reduction in the number of severe and lethal forms of the malady and, by preventing the development of morphologically grave forms, to improve the prognosis. The use of bonaphthon in experimental herpetic keratitis of rabbits, irrespective of the mode of its administration (locally or by mouth) cuts down the period of the keratitis cure almost in half, contributes to a speedier epithelization of the ulcerated surface and to the disappearance of inflammatory manifestations in the very substance of the cornea.
