Cries and whispers.

For abused women who see only darkness ahead, WomanKind, a hospital-based program, is a shining beacon--and a national model. Every woman entering a Fairview Health System hospital is routinely asked about abuse, and system hospitals address the problem throughout every department, not just in the emergency department. WomanKind than serves as a "bridge" to appropriate services in the community.

Getting down to basics. Providers reach out to strengthen families.

According to two health care execs, a healthy family unit is crucial to the health of a community. Recognizing the impact that divorce and other family stresses can have on health, several providers have decided to reach out to strengthen families before those tensions cause permanent damage.

An oasis in the sandhills. One system promotes healing versus curing.

When FirstHealth of the Carolinas wanted to bridge the gap between hospitalization and hospice, it came up with Oasis, a place "for healing, not curing." The complementary therapies used there worked as well for patients with chronic pain and other diagnoses as they did for the terminally ill. Now Oasis is a full-fledged part of FirstHealth's continuum of care.
