We have observed earlier that the pattern of gestational variation of microsomal glycerophosphate acyltransferase (GAT) activity is similar in maternal and fetal guinea pig lung. Furthermore, there is a close resemblance between these patterns and that of the gestational variation of fetal plasma thyroid hormone. It is known that triiodothyronine (T3) injected to pregnant rats can cross the placenta to some extent and cause an increase in phosphatidylcholine synthesis in fetal lung. It is possible, therefore, that the gestational increase of GAT activity in maternal and fetal lung is associated with an increase in maternal plasma thyroid hormone. The objective of this study was to investigate whether intramuscular injection of T3 to adult guinea pig causes any change in the activity of GAT in lung and, if so, to determine the mechanistic basis. The results indicated that T3 significantly increased the GAT activity in the microsomes but not in the mitochondria. Actinomycin D or cycloheximide abolished the hormone-mediated stimulation of the enzyme in the microsomes, suggesting that T3 is involved in both transcriptional and translational pathways of GAT synthesis. We also confirmed our previous preliminary finding that there is a gestational variation of GAT activity in maternal guinea pig lung and furthermore the increase in GAT activity during pregnancy is predominantly in the microsomes.
It is known that thyroid hormone enhances the biosynthesis of phosphatidylcholine in the lung. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of thyroid hormone on the activity of cholinephosphotransferase, the terminal enzyme in the CDP-choline pathway, in guinea pig lung mitochondria and microsomes. Intramuscular injection of triiodothyronine (T3, 0.25-4 mg/kg body wt) stimulated the activities of both mitochondrial and microsomal enzymes in a dose-dependent manner. However, the stimulation was much more pronounced in the microsomes than in the mitochondria. The stimulatory effect of T3 was blocked by the intraperitoneal injection of both actinomycin D and cycloheximide in the microsomes, whereas in the mitochondria, the hormonal effect was blocked only by cycloheximide. Thus, it is suggested that T3 stimulates not only the nucleocytoplasmic system for the de novo synthesis of the enzyme, but possibly also the regulation of the transport of the synthesized protein into the mitochondria. Furthermore, administration of T3 produced an increase in the uptake and incorporation of [14C]choline into phospholipids of lung slices in vitro. However, this effect was blocked by intraperitoneal injection of both actinomycin D and cycloheximide. Thus, the change in CPT activity by T3 in mitochondria is not reflected by enhanced incorporation of choline into phosphatidylcholine.

Studies have been done on the effect of Penicillin, Streptomycin and Isonicotinic Acid hydrazide on small intestinal oligosaccharidase and it was observed that the drug penicillin inhibited the enzyme lactase and sucrase by 62.7% and 34.7% respectively, whereas I.N.H. inhibited the enzyme sucrase and maltase by 57.1% and 56.14% respectively. Streptomycin did not show any inhibitory effect on those enzymes. Lactose tolerance test showed impairment of lactose absorption in case of penicillin. Fasting serum sugar level was diminished both in penicillin and streptomycin and the absorption capacity was increased after oral administration of streptomycin.
The study was carried out at Krishnanagar city of Nadia District, West Bengal on aims to focus the HIV/AIDS related awareness and attitudes. A total of 400 samples divided into illiterate, primary, secondary and higher educated people (100 from each group) were surveyed using "5-point Likert Scale" consisting of two parts-Part-I for measuring attitude and Part-II for measuring awareness. The data were collected at the end of 1999 and analyzed using SPSS computer programme. Results revealed subjects of any categories of people in general were not aware and shows negative attitude towards AIDS. Significant differences were existed among the categories except between illiterate & primary and secondary & higher educated group of people about awareness and attitude towards AIDS.
This reports a 27 yr old female Patient with seronegative polyarthritis who presented with lower GI bleeding and subsequently developed evidence of cutaneous vasculitis (palpable purpura) and orogenital ulcers. The cause of the GI bleeding was multiple ulcerations in the terminal ileum, cecum ascending colon and transverse colon. Continued and massive bleeding necessitated surgical resection of the involved segment of gut which on histopathological examination confirmed the presence of vasculities. This patient was thus diagnosed as having Behcet's disease. Although major GI bleeding is a rare manifestation of Behcet's disease with vasculitis of the gut, one must consider this possibility if the patient has multi-system involvement with evidence of vasculitis involving the skin in the form of palpable purpura.

The study of thyroid function in clinical conditions associated with the disorders of the hypothalamio-pituitary-adrenocortical axis indicated overt hypofunction of thyroid in all the three cases of Cushing's disease and subclinical hypo-or low normal function of thyroid in most of the cases of adrenogenital syndrome. It was suggested that hypo or low normal function of thyroid might facilitate excess elaboration of ACTH through CRF by swaying the balance of neurotransmitters at hypothalamus in favour of serotonin.

Percutaneous transluminal renal angioplasty (PTRA) was attempted in 96 patients of renovascular hypertension (RVHT) admitted during the period 1986 to 1992. The patients' age ranged from 14-70 (mean: 38.7 +/- 18.8) years. There were 42 (43.8%) males and 54 (56.2%) females. The cause of renal artery stenosis (RAS) was aorto-arteritis in 44 (45.8%), atherosclerosis in 28 (29.2%) and fibromuscular dysplasia in 24 (25%). Bilateral RAS was found in 16 (16.7%). PTRA was angiographically successful in 92 (95.8%) patients. The mean pressure gradient decreased from 82.6 +/- 8.2 to 11.2 +/- 3.6 mm Hg in aorto-arteritis, 75.2 +/- 13.2 to 9.6 +/- 6.4 mm Hg in atherosclerosis and from 86.4 +/- 10.6 to 13.2 +/- 8.2 mm Hg in fibromuscular dysplasia respectively. The patients were followed up for 43.2 +/- 24.1 (range: 6-77) months. Remission or satisfactory lowering of blood pressure was achieved in 80 (86.9%) patients. Clinical success rate (remission or satisfactory lowering of BP) at the end of follow-up period was 75.3 percent. Randomly selected repeat angiography was done in 45 out of 92 (49.1%) patients at the end of 24 months of follow-up. Restenosis was detected in 12 (26.7%) patients and was commonest in the atherosclerotic group (42.8%), followed by fibromuscular dysplasia (14.3%) and least common in aorto-arteritis (11.8%). Repeat angioplasty was done successfully in 10 (83.3%) patients.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
This study aimed to assess the prevalence of endoscopic and histological gastroduodenitis as well as helicobacter-like organisms in patients with peptic ulcer. After diagnostic endoscopy, gastroduodenal biopsy specimens were taken from thirty patients (n = 30) with clinical and endoscopic diagnosis of peptic ulcer (duodenal ulcer = 25, gastric ulcer = 5). Endoscopic gastroduodenitis occurred in 18 patients (60%). Histological gastritis was detected in the gastric body or antrum in 25 (83%) and duodenitis in 17 (57%) patients. There was significant correlation between endoscopic and histological gastritis (p < 0.05). Helicobacter-like organisms occurred in 73% of the patients with peptic ulcer and in 88% of the antral biopsy specimens showing antral gastritis. Presence of helicobacter-like organisms was in particular associated with acute on chronic gastritis compared to chronic gastritis (p < 0.01). Moreover the patients with gastritis were found to belong to the older age group and 81.8% had blood group O +ve (p < 0.01 and p < 0.05 respectively). We conclude that presence of helicobacter-like organisms in patients with peptic ulcer is significantly associated with acute on chronic gastritis.
