Plasma vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) levels and intestinal ischaemia.

Vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) is released into the portal circulation in large quantities by ischaemic bowel. In view of its known high concentration in the gut and potent vasoactive properties it may well be implicated in the pathogenesis of the serious haemodynamic changes produced by gut ischaemia.

Environmental adaptation of the mental patient.

An ecological model suggests looking at the hospitalized mental patient in terms of how well the resources available in the environment fit his individual needs. This study explores the relationship between the environmental fit of patients while they are in the hospital and their adaptation to the community once they have left. Data on individual needs and evaluations of environmental resources were obtained through a series of structured interviews. Results indicate that the more a patient feels the hospital environment is a good fit, the longer he stays there. Hospital fit is positively related to fit in the community, but the latter is related only to the degree of symptomatology exhibited by the expatient in the community and not to how long he is able to remain out of the hospital. Implications of the findings and the model are discussed.

The feasibility of tracing a sample of school-boys after a lapse of fifteen years.

Although the relationship between childhood behaviour and adult adjustment is often presented as established fact, relatively few non-retrospective studies have actually examined this perceived association. This paper presents a description of the attempt to establish the feasibility of tracing children after a lapse of 15 years and suggests that this may present fewer insuperable difficulties than might be imagined.

Effect of p-bromophenacyl bromide, an inhibitor of phospholipase A2, on arachidonic acid release and prostaglandin synthesis by the guinea-pig uterus in vitro.

The synthesis of prostaglandins F2alpha and E2 by guinea-pig uterine homogenates was inhibited by p-bromophenacyl bromide (PBPAB), an inhibitor of phospholipase A2. 2 Metabolism of prostaglandin F2alpha by uterine homogenates was undetectable; this was not affected by PBPAB. 3 There was no significant difference between the amounts of arachidonic acid released from uterine homogenates on days 7 and 1k of the oestrous cycle. Small amounts of dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid were detected in the homogenates. 4 The release of arachidonic acid from uterine homogenates was greatly inhibited by PBPAB. 5 Addition of exogenous arachidonic acid to uterine homogenates did not overcome the inhibition of uterine prostaglandin F2alpha synthesis produced by PBPAB. 6 It is concluded that PBPAB inhibits both the release of arachidonic acid from the guinea-pig uterus and its subsequent conversion into prostaglandins.
