Frequency of the ESD*5 allele in three ethnic groups in Minnesota.

Detection of the ESD*5 gene products was simplified by the use of isoelectric focusing (IEF). Gene frequencies for ESD*5 in whites, blacks and Amerindians from the State of Minnesota were 0.019, 0.002 and 0.000, respectively. The gene frequencies observed in the white data set were similar to those reported for European whites.

Cholinesterase activities of workers exposed to organophosphorus insecticides in Pakistan and Haiti and an evaluation of the tintometric method.

Five reference laboratories were established in Pakistan for monitoring cholinesterase (ChE) activities of workers exposed to organophosphorus compounds. ChE activities were determined by the Michel and tintometric method. Observations of ChE activities were made during two malaria seasons. The first season showed that although a significant depression of cholinesterase occurred among some of the workers, the ChE activities of workers were within the normal range during the following season. The reason for the difference is discussed. Similar studies were undertaken in Haiti. Mean and standard deviations (SD) were calculated for comparison of the tintometric versus the Michel method. The data show a correlation between the methods. For further evaluation of the tintometric method, organophosphorus and oxon analog inhibition of cholinesterase were determined in vitro. The tabulated data show that the tintometric method is adequate for determining whether a worker is exposed to dangerous amounts of insecticides.

Evidence for the uniqueness of eidetic imagery.

This research examined the performance of eidetic subjects, classified by the standard self-report criteria, on a set of objective and subjective measures. Eidetic subjects were statistically superior to controls on an 'accuracy of report' test and a superimposition task, but these differences were not so large as to provide compelling evidence for the uniqueness of eidetic imagery. Further experiments investigated the effects of stimulus manipulations--type of interference and level of illumination--on, respectively, visual retention and duration of phenomenal image. The pattern of effects differed markedly between eidetic subjects and a control group matched on a measure of capacity for visual memory. These findings provide converging evidence for a qualitative distinction between eidetic imagery and visual memory that does not rely on differences in storage capacity. Eidetic imagery appears to be a long-lasting, percept-like experience which varies considerably in clarity and definition; its duration is critically dependent on level of illumination and its contents are easily disrupted by after-coming visual stimuli.

Localization of mammary tumors in vivo with 131I-labeled Fab fragments of antibodies against mouse mammary epithelial (MME) antigens.

The Fab fragments of antibodies against cell-type-specific surface antigens of mouse mammary epithelial cells (MME-antigens) were used to localize mammary tumors successfully. The radioiodine-labeled anti-MME (Fab) was injected into mice carrying simulated mammary metastases, and after 24 hours the amount of label per gram of excised tissue was several times greater in the tumor than in liver, brain, lung, or muscle. Kidney showed considerable accumulation of label but this appeared to be nonspecific. Kinetic studies revealed a rapid elimination of labeled Fab in the urine with only 1% of the injected dose remaining in the entire blood pool after 24 hours. Wit a high-purity germanium camera, mammary tumors were clearly located ty the 131I-labeled anti-MME (Fab), and normalization to 99mTc-pertechnetate distribution in the animal increased the specificity. The density of 131I-label was fourfold greater over the mammary tumor than over comparable areas of the mouse. No accumulation of 131I-anti-MME (Fab) was observed in nonmammary tumors nor in mammary tumors when labeled nonspecific Fab was used. An analogous system using an antihuman mammary epithelial antiserum is being developed for localization of breast metastases in humans.

The partially reduced species present in purified cytochrome oxidase from baker's yeast is cytochrome a.

Cytochrome oxidase purified from baker's yeast submitochondrial particles is found to exist in a partially reduced state in the resting enzyme. Studies utilizing optical and EPR spectroscopy indicate that the "inactive" fraction contains a reduced low-spin heme, cytochrome a possibly indicating a block of electron transfer from cytochrome a to cytochrome a 3. There is no apparent reduction of either the EPR-detectable copper or the species associated with the 830 nm band. Oxidative titrations of the resting-state yeast cytochrome oxidase indicate that the reduction potential of the species titrating is higher than that of ferricyanide. This "inactive" cytochrome oxidase is not the result of the isolation procedure, but seems to represent a species which is present in the intact yeast.

A thirty-month clinical experience in natural family planning.

A Natural Family Planning service was evaluated at the end of a 30-month developmental phase. There were 444 women taught and 322 method acceptor of which 248 intended to avoid pregnancy. NFP clients were older (mean age 26.9 vs 22.4 and 23.7 for comparison groups), and a larger percentage were married (83.1 per cent vs 23.0 per cent for the comparison group). After one year of use, the unplanned pregnancy rate was 14.4 per cent and the total dropout rate was 37.6 per cent by life table analysis.

Sexual health care clinician in an acute spinal cord injury unit.

This article introduces the role of the sexual health care clinician, a nonphysician specialist trained to diagnose and treat sexual dysfunctions of disabled persons. Under medical supervision, the clinician is part of the treatment team in an acute spinal cord injury unit, a general rehabilitation center and an extended care unit. The clinician's role includes direct patient care; education for professionals, students and community agencies; liaison with other rehabilitation groups; and research. The process of sexual rehabilitation is conceptualized and experience with the specialty in an acute setting is described. Experience indicates that sexual assessment, diagnosis and management is a technical specialty which requires in-depth training. The major contributions of the service are an early legitimization of sex-related concerns; the crystallization of physiologic emotional and social capabilities and needs; and the specific instructions for experimentation with various sexual alternatives.

Use of human mammary epithelial antigens (HME-Ags) in breast cancer diagnosis.

The use of human mammary epithelial antigens (HME-Ags) was explored in detection of human breast cancers. Specific antibodies were made against HME-Ags, which are normal differentiation antigens of human breast epithelium, and were used in a solid phase radioimmunoassay. Circulating HME-Ags were detected in sera of breast cancer patients with high-tumor load. These antibodies, after radioiodination, were also successfully used to localize human breast tumors grafted in athymic nude mice by whole body radioimaging devices. These results suggest that HME-Ags can be applied to breast cancer diagnosis with higher specificity than those already reported.

Assessment of recovery of arm control in hemiplegic stroke patients. 1. Arm function tests.

In a preliminary study a group of hemiplegic patients have been assessed for return of arm function for periods up to 64 weeks after stroke. The assessment procedure employs a few simple and easily performed tests which take into account principles of the central nervous control of movement. The tests are highly repeatable and can be carried out by staff untrained in medicine or any form of physical therapy. Patients have been divided into two groups on the basis of the scores obtained in the tests at 16 weeks after stroke. The group scoring 80% or more are very likely subsequently to recover useful function of the arm and hand. The group of patients scoring less than 80% at 16 weeks after stroke are likely subsequently to recover limited arm movements and little hand movement. The preliminary results would suggest that the tasks provide a guide to prognosis and an indiction of the most suitable type of general physical therapy.
