A Delphi survey of clinical nursing research priorities in Western Australia.

In 1989-1990 an investigation was undertaken to ascertain which problems WA nurses considered required researching. A modified Delphi technique was employed to obtain data from nurses in hospitals and health care agencies throughout the metropolitan and rural regions in the state. Participants worked in areas of acute care, mental health, paediatrics, gerontology, community health and domiciliary services and addictions. Problems identified were categorised into three streams; clinical, management and staff development. Respondents were required to assign a value to items according to their importance to nurses and to patients. They were also asked to indicate whether they considered there was an adequate research base relevant to each item. Results reported here are based on the 10 priority items identified in the clinical stream.

Administering heparin subcutaneously: an evaluation of techniques used and bruising at the injection site.

This experimental study tested the effects of four different subcutaneous injection techniques on bruising at the injection site. The independent variables of aspiration of the syringe prior to injecting heparin and pressure on the site following injection, and the dependent variable of size of bruising were studied. Aspiration of the syringe had little effect on bruising. After the first injection, fewer subjects who received pressure following the injection had bruising, the difference being significant for females. However analysis of subsequent injections did not support the conclusion that pressure reduces the probability of bruising.

Professional autonomy: a pilot study to determine the effects of a professional development program on nurses' attitudes.

In this article, the authors describe a pilot study conducted to evaluate a component of a professional development program designed for Clinical Nurses in a general teaching hospital. Permission was obtained to use an established instrument for measuring attitude toward professional autonomy. A non equivalent pre-test/post-test, control group design was used. Results indicate that the program was influential in changing nurses' attitudes toward autonomy. Implications of using an instrument designed for an American cohort of nurses and modified to depict an Australian nursing culture are discussed.

A Western Australian Delphi survey of staff development research priorities.

A modified Delphi survey conducted during 1989-1990 identifies problems that Western Australian nurses consider research priorities. Participants were employed in hospital and health-care agencies throughout metropolitan and rural regions of the state. The large number of topics generated were analyzed and categorized into three areas of nursing: staff development, clinical practice, and management. Participants rated each topic on its importance to nurses and patients. The results are based on the 10 priority items identified in the staff development field.
