Electrophysiologic studies before and after administration of verapamil were performed in three young patients with recurrent sustained ventricular tachycardia (VT) of right bundle branch block morphology. VT was not provoked by maximal treadmill testing in any patient. Electrophysiologic findings at induction of VT suggested reentry in the first patient and triggered automaticity in the second. Findings were inconclusive in the third patient. Intravenous verapamil terminated the VT in all the three cases. Oral verapamil prevented laboratory induction of sustained VT in the latter two patients. However, VT could be provoked during exercise in both while on oral verapamil therapy. These findings suggest that different mechanisms may underlie ventricular tachycardia dependent upon slow-response tissue; the role of oral verapamil in the treatment of such VT needs further investigation.

A detailed audiological study combined with certain haematological investigations which were never previously done was undertaken on Todas, a small vanishing tribe of Nilgiris, South India. Ten per cent of the Todas studied exhibited otosclerosis which, though lower than that of a previous study, is still a very high percentage when compared to the general population. The incidence of chronic suppurative otitis media in Todas is markedly low (1-6 per cent) and 13-3 per cent of Todas had sensorineural hearing loss. Evaluation of hearing thresholds at various frequencies in the different age groups did not show much variation from that of the general population. The incidence of presbyacusis is not found to be low as reported earlier. Blood pressure recordings did not show any age-related increase. The majority of Todas studied belonged to the blood group 'B' (63 per cent) and 16-6 per cent belonged to the 'AB' group, which is distinctly different from the distribution pattern seen in the general Indian population. There was no significant variation in the serum cholesterol level in Todas.
The present study examined the relationship between lipid peroxidation and vitamin C, vitamin E and reduced glutathione levels in plasma, erythrocytes and erythrocyte membranes of pulmonary tuberculosis patients and an equal number of age-and sex-matched healthy subjects. Enhanced plasma, erythrocytes and erythrocyte membrane lipid peroxidation with concomitant decline in vitamin C, vitamin E and reduced glutathione levels were found in pulmonary tuberculosis patients. The elevated lipid peroxidation and decreased vitamin C, vitamin E and reduced glutathione levels indicate the potential of oxidative damage to erythrocytes and erythrocyte membranes of pulmonary tuberculosis patients.
