[The Cracow modification of the Calotte method of teeth placement in clinical evaluation].

The purpose of the paper was checking of theoretical principles and assessment of the clinical usefulness of the calotte method of teeth placement in Cracow modification. In 110 patients this study was carried out according to the following schema: prosthetic treatment using complete prostheses with teeth placed by the modified method or by the Gysi-Fischer method, for comparison, and periodically repeated clinical examinations considering such elements as: articulation and occlusion, fixation and statics of prostheses, masticatory function and speech, and aesthetic result and adaptation process. In all these parameters good results were obtained by the modified method. It is concluded that the modification is particularly useful in therapeutically difficult cases, with unfavourable anatomic-physiological conditions of the denture bearing area.

[Teeth placement in complete denture by the Calotte method in Cracow modification].

Theoretical principles and the modification of the calotte method of teeth placement in complete prosthesis are presented. The method combines the elements of the articulation and static theories, but is easy for teaching and introduction, is not requiring a change of the clinical management (in relation to the generally accepted principles) or use of special devices of articulators which are presently unavailable. Checking of correct teeth placement is also easy. The method is thus simplified and thus possible for application in laboratories with average technical equipment.

[Studies on the response of epithelial cells of the hard palate to prolonged pressure exerted by prosthesis].

Microscopic examination was done of biopsy material of hard palate mucosa in healthy subjects with normal teeth and in edentulous patients with a long history of complete upper prostheses. The examination in transmission electron microscope included cells of the multilayer flat-cell epithelium of the mucosa covering the hard palate. Isolated cilia were found in the cells of the germinative layer and in the lamina propria of the mucosa where they penetrated from the epithelium across the basement membrane. The cilia were present in a significantly higher number of cells in hard palate epithelium subjected to long-term pressure exerted by the prosthesis. On the basis of observations of the structure of cilia and its environment one may assume that this apparatus may serve as an epithelial receptor of local changes produced by long-term and changing pressure of the mucosa through the mediation of masticatory forces transmitted onto the mucosa by the plate of the prosthesis.

[Studies of the role of cellular immunity and angiogenetic changes in the pathogenesis of circumscribed scleroderma].

The studies were performed in 48 patients with morphea and included evaluation of 1) antinuclear antibodies 2) lymphocyte induced angiogenesis 3) natural killer (NK) cell activity and 4) T cell subpopulations in peripheral blood. The presence of antinuclear antibodies was found in 44.4% (8/18) patients with scleroderma linearis and in 21% (4/19) patients with morphea disseminata. Lymphocyte induced angiogenesis was increased in 41.5% (17/41) morphea patients, mainly in cases with pronounced vascular changes. The E rosette forming test showed a decreased percentage of active rosette forming cells (ARFC) and total rosette forming cells (TRFC) in peripheral blood and the NK cell activity was lowered in patients with morphea. These results obtained in patients with morphea show some similarities and differences in comparison to cellular immunity disturbances in patients with systemic scleroderma.

[Studies of the mechanism of disorders of the natural killer cell activity in patients with systemic scleroderma].

The NK activity of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) was evaluated in 90 patients with various subsets of systemic scleroderma (SSc). The NK activity, as performed with K-562 as target cell, was found to be significantly lowered in patients with diffuse scleroderma, but did not differ from the healthy control in patients with acrosclerosis. The lowest values in the NK activity assay were obtained in patients with most extensive skin involvement and severe internal organ changes. The NK activity of healthy donors' PBMC was significantly decreased by addition of SSc patients PBMC (50:1) to the cytotoxicity assay, but was not influenced by the patients sera.

[Studies on the production of epidermal cytokines after UVB irradiation in patients with epidermodysplasia verruciformis].

The production of interleukin-1 (IL-1) and interleukin-1 inhibitor by keratinocytes isolated from the skin of epidermodysplasia verruciformis patients was studied. Keratinocytes from uninvolved skin of patients with most pronounced neoplastic lesions produced large amounts of an IL-1 inhibitor (20-40 kD). Keratinocytes from preneoplastic lesions showed no significant differences compared to cells from healthy donors but their production of IL-1 after UVB irradiation was increased.

[Studies of natural killer cell cytotoxicity against human chondrocytes in patients with articular arthritic changes complicated by psoriasis and systemic scleroderma].

The natural killer (NK) activity against fetal chondrocytes was studied in patients with psoriasis and systemic sclerosis. It was shown that the cell responsible for the cytotoxic effect is a lymphocyte CD16+, CD2-. In patients with arthritic psoriasis NK activity against chondrocytes was significantly higher than in other psoriasis patients or in healthy controls. Preliminary studies show that the NK activity against chondrocytes is decreased in patients with systemic sclerosis.

[Physicochemical examination of materials used for dentures for elaboration of individual composition of acrylic plastics].

It has been found that materials for dentures are obtained from poly (methyl methacrylate) as the basic component. Basing on the identification analysis of foreign acrylic plastics used for performing denture plates and literature and patent investigations a production technology of individual material calle Akpol S has been elaborated. Series of physicochemical comparative examinations of this composition and the foreign materials with regard to the requirements of ISO 1567 international standard have been carried out. It has been found that this material is comparable with the plastics of this type commonly used with regard to physicochemical features; a it also meets the requirements of the standard.
