The present study deals with the effect of butylated hydroxy anisole (BHA), an antioxidant, on longevity and fecundity of insects infesting BHA soaked seeds of Vigna radiata. Median (LT(50)) and maximum (LT(100)) life spans as well as post-reproductive period of the insect reared on optimal concentration (1 mM) of antioxidant soaked seeds were higher than the control. However, the reproductive period of the females and the number of eggs laid/female declined. The results are indicative of the increased life span of the insects on BHA feeding at the cost of the reproductive period.
Optimal ascorbic acid concentration (1 mM) increased the median (LT(50)) and maximum (LT(100)) life spans, decreased age-independent susceptibility to death (a(0)), reproductive period, number of eggs laid/female but prolonged the post-reproductive period in Callosobruchus maculatus. The activities of respiratory enzymes and the levels of metabolic end-products declined while the activities of antioxygenic enzymes increased. The increased longevity of insects reared on ascorbic acid soaked seeds may be interpreted in terms of conservation of energy by way of decreased reproductive potentiality and the maintenance of a homeostatic balance between pro-oxidant generation and antioxidant defences.
Life span and antioxygenic enzyme activities of insects reared on optimal BHA concentration (1 mM) soaked seeds were higher than their respective controls. However, the reproductive potential, peroxides and the level of free radicals declined. The increased longevity with BHA could be attributed to its free radical quenching effect, thereby leading to the decreased peroxide levels and the increased antioxygenic enzyme activities of the insects.
A facile and efficient method for direct immobilization of phosphorylated oligonucleotides on an epoxy-activated glass surface is described. The new immobilization strategy has been analyzed for its performance in DNA microarray under both microwave and thermal conditions. It reflects high immobilization efficiency ( approximately 23%), and signal-to-noise ratio ( approximately 98) and resulted in high hybridization efficiency ( approximately 36%) in comparison to those obtained with standard methods, viz., NTMTA ( approximately 9.76%) and epoxide-amine ( approximately 9.82%). The probes immobilized through the new strategy were found to be heat-stable, since the performance of microarray decreased by only approximately 7% after subjecting it to 20 PCR-like heat cycles, suggesting that the chemistry could be used in integrated PCR/microarray devices. The immobilization of probes following the proposed chemistry resulted in spots of superior quality in terms of spot morphology, spot homogeneity, and signal reproducibility. The constructed microarrays have been successfully used for the discrimination of nucleotide mismatches. In conclusion, these features make the new immobilization strategy ideal for facile, efficient, and cost-effective manufacturing of DNA microarrays.
Fifty samples of bronchial secretions collected from patients of non-tubercular lower respiratory tract infections through fiberoptic bronchoscopy (FOB) were cultured both for aerobic and anaerobic organisms. Thirty-three (66%) samples yielded bacteria. Out of these, thirty were isolated in pure culture and from three, a mixed growth of aerobic and anaerobic micro-organisms was obtained. Aerobic bacteria were the predominant isolates. Stephylococcus aureus (10), pseudomonas (9) and streptococcus pneumoniae (8) were the major aerobic isolates. Ciprofloxacin was found to be the most effective drug against aerobes and metronidazole against anaerobes in vitro susceptibility tests.
A 50-year-old male, diabetic, post transplant patient had recurrent pneumonia. The first episode responded well to antibiotics, while on the second occasion he had a necrotising pneumonia, which developed into a thick-walled cavity. Despite antibiotics, his condition rapidly deteriorated precluding bronchoscopy or percutaneous biopsy. Post-mortem lung biopsy revealed typical hyphae of mucormycosis.

Insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus is associated with renal failure, diabetic retinopathy, neuropathy and vasculopathy. We report the first successful simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplant in India in a young diabetic with renal failure. The dual transplant has cured his diabetes and renal failure and has had a beneficial effect on his neuropathy, retinopathy and quality of life. Obstacles to dual transplant in India include a lack of suitable recipients and a cadaver donor programme that is still in its infancy.
A variant of hemangioma and an uncommon congenital condition, the Sturge Weber syndrome (SWS), also called encephalo trigeminal angiomatosis, is a neurocutaneous disorder with angiomas involving the skin of the face (cutaneous angioma) and pia arachnoid (leptomeningeal angioma). It occurs typically in the ophthalmic and maxillary distributions of the trigeminal nerve (1,2). Here we present a case of a 14 year old girl.

We report a rare case of an association of external enamel pearl with internal enamel pearl on the root of a molar. To the best of our knowledge, association of external and internal enamel pearls has not been previously reported. We discussed the histogenesis of enamel pearls and proposed that internal enamel pearl formation may be a continuation of formation of external enamel pearl.
