Temperature and corticosterone relationships in microwave-exposed rats.

Plasma corticosterone and colonic temperature were measured in unanesthetized male rats exposed to 2,450-MHz continuous wave (cw) radiation to characterize the response of the pituitary-adrenal axis to microwave exposure. The rats were exposed in the far field of a horn antenna for 30 or 60 min at power densities of 0, 13, 20, 30, 40, 50, or 60 mW/cm2, or for 120 min at 0, 13, 20, 30, or 40 mW/cm2. The average energy absorption rate of the rats was 0.16 W/kg absorbed per mW/cm2 incident. Plasma from individual rats decapitated immediately after exposure was collected for analysis. Colonic temperature was significantly elevataed after exposures to power densities of 13 mW/cm2 or greater, with progressively larger increases after high intensity exposures. Plasma corticosterone was significantly elevated above control levels only after exposures at 50 or 60 mW/cm2 for 30- or 60-min exposures, and at 20, 30, and 40 mW/cm2 for 120-min exposures. The relationship between the increased levels of circulating corticosterone and colonic temperature suggested that the increases in corticosterone levels may reflect a level of physiological response to the body temperature elevations caused by microwave exposure.

Corticotropin responsiveness in the neonatal rat.

Plasma ACTH concentrations were determined in neonatal rats 1, 7, 14, and 21 days old, subjected to treatment with either a median eminence extract with corticotropin releasing factor (CRF) activity or to ether exposure. 'CRF' injection elevated plasma ACTH levels on all days tested. Ether exposure elevated ACTH levels on days 14 and 21, but not on days 1 or 7. These results indicate: (1) that there is no diminution of responsiveness of the pituitary to direct stimulation by CRF as a function of age, and (2) that the mediators of the stress response above the level of the pituitary are not functionally mature until approximately day 14. Correlations with previous studies also indicate that there is a delay in the return of adrenal responsiveness until some time after these mediators attain maturity.

Effects of exposure to microwaves: problems and perspectives.

During the last 25 years, there has been a remarkable development and increase in the number of processes and devices that utilize or emit microwaves. Such devices are used in all sectors of our society for military, industrial, telecommunications, and consumer applications. Although there is information on biologic effects and potential hazard to man from exposure to microwaves, considerable confusion and misinformation has permeated not only the public press but also some scientific and technical publications. The purpose of this review is to place the available information on biologic effects of microwaves in proper perspective and to suggest approaches to future studies.
