[Association of neuromotor retardation and chromosome lqH report of a case].

A case of neuromotor retardation in association with chromosome 1qh's reported. Chromosomes analysis of the patient and three relatives showed increased long arm on the n. degrees 1 chromosome, in all of them. However it is wmphasized that the clinical feautre could be secondary to various non genetics factors, also.

A new method for sampling maternal blood in the placental intervillous space.

The intervillous space (IVS) is part of the histofunctional unit of the human placenta and by being a fetal-maternal exchange interface is an important subject of study for the understanding of fetal physiology, especially in nutritional investigations. A method developed for the collection of IVS blood has permitted to evaluate the fetal-maternal exchanges in an effective manner. Two disadvantages of this method, however, are the mixing of IVS blood and fetal blood and marked hemolysis. In the present study we introduce and describe some modifications of this method using a single stylet for the perforation of the chorionic plate which simplifies collection and reduces the chance of mixing and hemolysis of the samples obtained.

[Congenital tuberculosis]

OBJECTIVE: Considering the rarity and the significance of early diagnosis for planning appropriate treatment, a case of congenital tuberculosis is reported.CASE REPORT: After a prolonged stay in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of a male pre-term infant without improvement, the diagnosis of tuberculosis was suspected when his mother underwent thoracotomy for valve replacement due to a subacute endocarditis. At this time, multiple pleural granulomas were detected and the diagnosis of tuberculosis was confirmed by histology. His mother seldom went to the NICU to see the baby and she was rarely very close to him in these occasions. After tuberculosis therapy, the baby gradually improved. CONCLUSION: Among the possible ways of transmission, the reported case was probably transmitted by aspiration of contaminated amniotic fluid in utero or at the time of delivery.

[Growth of preterm infants].

A hundred-forty-one infants born from 26 to 36 weeks, appropriate-for-gestational-age, were followed from birth until the corrected postmenstrual age of 42 weeks. Weight, height and cephalic perimeter were measured on a weekly basis. Based on the average values and percentiles of these measurements it was adjusted a third degree polynomial function. The growth curves obtained, when compared with the so-called intra-uterine growth curves, showed that during the 40th and 42nd postmenstrual weeks the averages and medians are similar. It was observed that the growth dynamics of the preterm infants showed a catch-up pattern in the immediate postnatal period.

Cytogenetic and dermatoglyphic studies of newborns with single umbilical artery.

Cytogenetic studies were carried out on 24 newborns with single umbilical artery (SUA), whereas dermatoglyphic analysis were performed on 14 of them. Metaphase examination showed increased size of the short arm of an acrocentric chromosome of group D or of group G in 6 of the 24 SUA babies studied. Numerous chromosome breaks were detected in one other case. Dermatologlyphic data showed that the total finger ridge count did not deviate from normal patterns, whereas the aTd angle showed increased values in 5 of the 14 cases studied. The absence of major chromosome aberrations does not exclude the possibility of chromosomal etiology for SUA, since the increased frequency of acrocentric polymorphism found in the present series and the 5 cases of increased aTd angle suggest such an occurrence.
