Effects of oral magnesium supplementation on glycaemic control in Type 2 diabetes: a meta-analysis of randomized double-blind controlled trials.

AIMS: The aim of this study was to assess the evidence on the effect of oral magnesium supplementation on glycaemic control in patients with Type 2 diabetes. METHODS: We searched the electronic databases of medline, embase and the Cochrane Controlled Trials Register up to January 2005. We identified nine randomized double-blind controlled trials with a total of 370 patients with Type 2 diabetes and of duration 4-16 weeks. The median dose of oral magnesium supplementation was 15 mmol/day (360 mg/day) in the treatment groups. The primary outcome was glycaemic control, as measured by glycated haemoglobin (HbA(1c)) or fasting blood glucose levels; the secondary outcomes included body mass index, blood pressure (BP) and lipids. Using a random-effects model, we calculated the weighted mean differences (WMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS: After a median duration of 12 weeks, the weighted mean post-intervention fasting glucose was significantly lower in the treatment groups compared with the placebo groups [-0.56 mmol/l (95% CI, -1.10 to -0.01); P for heterogeneity = 0.02]. The difference in post-intervention HbA(1c) between magnesium supplementation groups and control groups was not significant [-0.31% (95% CI, -0.81 to 0.19); P for heterogeneity = 0.10]. Neither systolic nor diastolic BP was significantly changed. Magnesium supplementation increased on high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels [0.08 mmol/l (95% CI, 0.03 to 0.14); P for heterogeneity = 0.36] but had no effect on total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and triglyceride. CONCLUSIONS: Oral magnesium supplementation for 4-16 weeks may be effective in reducing plasma fasting glucose levels and raising HDL cholesterol in patients with Type 2 diabetes, although the long-term benefits and safety of magnesium treatment on glycaemic control remain to be determined.

Vasospasm after subarachnoid hemorrhage: utility of perfusion CT and CT angiography on diagnosis and management.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the utility of perfusion CT (PCT) combined with CT angiography (CTA) for the diagnosis and management of vasospasm, by using conventional digital subtraction angiography (DSA) as the gold standard. METHODS: We retrospectively identified 27 patients with acute subarachnoid hemorrhage who had undergone CTA/PCT, DSA, and transcranial Doppler (TCD) ultrasonography within a time interval of 12 hours of one another. The patients' charts were reviewed for treatment of vasospasm. CTA, PCT, TCD, and DSA examinations were independently reviewed and quantified for vasospasm. PCT thresholds, CTA findings, noncontrast CT (NCT) hypodensities, and TCD thresholds were evaluated for accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity, as well as for negative (NPV) and positive predictive values (PPV) in the prediction of angiographic vasospasm and endovascular treatment, considering DSA as the gold standard. RESULTS: Thirty-five CTA/PCT, TCD, and DSA examinations were performed on these 27 patients. A total of 123 arterial territories in 11 patients demonstrated angiographic vasospasm. Six patients underwent endovascular therapy. CTA qualitative assessment and PCT-derived mean transit time (MTT) with a threshold at 6.4 seconds represented the most accurate (93%) combination for the diagnosis of vasospasm, whereas MTT considered alone represented the most sensitive parameter (NPV, 98.7%). A cortical regional cerebral blood flow value </=39.3 (mL x 100 g(-1)x min(-1)) represented the most accurate (94.8%) indicator for endovascular therapy. PCT had significantly higher PPV (89.9%) than TCD (62.9%). CONCLUSIONS: A CT survey combining CTA and PCT represents an accurate screening test in patients with suspected vasospasm. However promising, the value of PCT for selecting the best management strategy in such patients will need to be further investigated.

Quantitative imaging of proteoglycan in cartilage using a gadolinium probe and microCT.

OBJECTIVE: Micro-computed tomography (microCT) imaging has the potential to allow the three-dimensional (3D) visualization of cartilage morphology. However, cartilage intensity on a microCT image is weak because cartilage does not strongly attenuate X-rays. This work was designed to demonstrate that exposure of cartilage to charged gadolinium compounds modifies the intensity to allow an improved visualization of cartilage morphology and the determination of proteoglycan content. DESIGN: Trypsin was used to deplete proteoglycan in bovine nasal cartilage disks. Disks were then exposed to Gd(3+), gadopentetate (Gd-DTPA(2-)), or gadoteridol (Gd-HP-DO3A), and imaged with microCT. The intensities of the disks were measured from the images and compared to the actual proteoglycan content determined with a dimethylmethylene blue assay. RESULTS: Treatment of naïve disks with 200 mM Gd(3+) for 24h at room temperature produced a 2.8-fold increase in intensity on microCT images. Similar treatment with 200 mM Gd-DTPA(2-) produced a 1.4-fold increase. After 2h of trypsin treatment at room temperature, the intensities of cartilage disks exposed to 20 0mM Gd(3+) decreased by 12%. Conversely, the intensities of trypsin-treated disks exposed to 200 mM Gd-DPTA(2-) increased by 15%. Trypsin treatment caused a 4% increase in the intensities of disks exposed to neutral Gd-HP-DO3A. The correlation between proteoglycan content and the microCT intensity of cartilage treated with Gd(3+) was very good (r(2)=0.81). CONCLUSIONS: Gadolinium and microCT allow an improved 3D visualization of cartilage and quantification of its proteoglycan content.

Microsatellite analysis of pooled Schistosoma mansoni DNA: an approach for studies of parasite populations.

Human parasites are often distributed in metapopulations, which makes random sampling for genetic epidemiology difficult. The typical approach to sampling Schistosoma mansoni involves laboratory passage to obtain individual worms with small sample size and selection bias as a consequence. By contrast, the naturally pooled samples from egg output in stool or urine directly represent the genetic composition of current populations. To test whether pooled samples could be used to estimate population allele frequencies, DNA from individual cloned parasites was pooled and amplified by PCR for 7 microsatellites. By polyacrylamide gel analysis, the relative band intensities of the products from the major alleles in the pooled samples differed by 0-6% from the summed intensities of the individual clones (mean = 2.1%+/-2.1% S.D.). The number of PCR cycles (25-40) did not influence the accuracy of the estimate. Varying the frequency of 1 allele in pooled samples from 32 to 69% likewise did not affect accuracy. Allele frequency estimates from aggregate samples such as eggs will be a better foundation for studies of parasite population dynamics as well as the basis for large-scale association studies of host and parasite characteristics.

Characterisation of systemic dissemination of nonreplicating adenoviral vectors from tumours in local gene delivery.

Systemic virus dissemination is a potential problem during local gene delivery in solid tumours. However, the kinetics and pathways of the dissemination have not been well characterised during the first 24 h after the infusion is started. To this end, we infused adenoviral vectors for luciferase or enhanced green fluorescence protein into three different tumour models in mice. During and/or after the infusion, we determined the amount of adenoviruses in the tumour, blood, and liver, and examined the transgene expression in the liver, lung, blood, and tumour. In addition, we intravenously injected tumour cells expressing luciferase and examined the biodistribution of these cells in the body. We observed transgene expression in the liver and tumour at 24 h after the infusion, but could not detect transgene expression in the blood and lung. The peak concentration of viral vectors in the plasma occurred during the intratumoral infusion. At 10 min after the infusion, few viral vectors remained in the blood and the ratio of copy numbers of adenoviruses between liver and tumour was > 2 in 80% and > or = 10 in 40% of the mice. Most tumour cells injected intravenously accumulated in the lung within the first 24 h. Taken together, these data indicated that systemic virus dissemination occurred mainly during the first 10 min after the intratumoral infusion was started, and that the dissemination was due to infusion-induced convective transport of viral vectors into leaky tumour microvessels.

A tiered risk-based approach for predicting diffuse and point source phosphorus losses in agricultural areas.

Implementation of the European Union Water Framework Directive requires an assessment of the pressures from human activity, which, combined with information on the sensitivity of the receiving waterbody to the pressures, will identify those water bodies at risk of failing to meet the Directive's environmental objectives. Part of the process of undertaking the risk assessment for lakes is an assessment of diffuse agricultural phosphorus (P) pressures. Three approaches of increasing sophistication were developed for this purpose: a basic 'risk screening' approach (tier 1) applicable to all lakes in Great Britain (GB) and based on export coefficients for different land cover classes and animal types; the Pressure Delivery Risk Screening Matrix approach (tier 2) that differentiated between pressures in surface water and groundwater river basins; and the Phosphorus Indicators Tool (PIT), a simple model of locational risk and P delivery potential (tier 3). Application of the three approaches to a range of lake catchments in England demonstrated that a tiered risk assessment approach was appropriate which was tailored to the quality of the available data. A step-wise procedure was developed whereby if the tier 1 and 2 approaches showed a catchment to be at high risk of failing to meet the Directive's environmental objectives with regard to P, it was justifiable to undertake a more detailed assessment using the tier 3 approach. The tier 1 approach was applied to all lakes in GB greater than 1 ha in size on the assumption that the boundary between the good/moderate status classes under the Water Framework Directive guidelines represented a doubling of the total P (TP) reference conditions. The initial outputs suggested that 51% of lakes in GB are predicted to not meet the TP targets identified for high or good status and must, therefore, be considered at risk. There were regional differences in numbers of lakes at risk. Scotland appeared to have the fewest sites at risk (18%); England the most (88%), with Wales having an intermediate percentage (56%). A comparison of P pressures on freshwaters using the tier 2 approach with other pressures on waterbodies (e.g. nitrate, sediment) in GB is shown as risk maps on the Environment Agency website at: . The tier 3 approach was applied to data-rich catchments and identified at the 1 km(2) areas of relatively high risk of P delivery to water.

Local anesthetics facilitate ion transport across lipid planar bilayer membranes under an electric field: dependence on type of lipid bilayer.

In order to elucidate the role of structural change of lipid membrane bilayer in the mode of action of local anesthetic, we studied the effects of local anesthetics, charged tetracaine and uncharged benzocaine, on ion permeability across various lipid planar bilayers (PC, mixed PC/PS (4/1, mol/mol); mixed PC/PE (1/1, mol/mol); mixed PC/SM (4/1, mol/mol)) under a constant applied voltage. The membrane conductances increased in the order of PC<<PC/PS<or=PC/SM<<PC/PE. When the constant voltage of -100 or -70 mV was applied through the lipid bilayer membranes in the presence of positively charged tetracaine, the fluctuating current pulses with the large amplitude generated, but not appeared in the absence of tetracaine. The addition of uncharged benzocaine generated the fluctuating currents with the small amplitude. Both charged tetracaine and uncharged benzocaine facilitated electrophoretically the transport of small ions such as KCl in the buffer solution through the fluctuating pores in the lipid bilayer membranes formed by interaction with the local anesthetic under the negative applied membrane potential. The current pulses also contained actual transport of charged tetracaine together with the transport of the small ions. The amplitude and the duration time of the electrical current generated by adding the local anesthetics were dependent on the type of the lipid, the applied voltage and its voltage polarity.

The influence of letrozole on serum lipid concentrations in postmenopausal women with primary breast cancer who have completed 5 years of adjuvant tamoxifen (NCIC CTG MA.17L).

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to evaluate changes in serum lipid parameters {cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, triglycerides and lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)]}, in postmenopausal women receiving letrozole or placebo after adjuvant tamoxifen for early stage breast cancer (NCIC CTG MA.17L). PATIENTS AND METHODS: MA.17L is a substudy of MA.17, a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of letrozole 2.5 mg taken daily for 5 years in postmenopausal women with primary breast cancer completing approximately 5 years of prior adjuvant tamoxifen. Patients consenting to participate in this companion study had blood drawn and lipid parameters (total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, Lp(a), triglycerides) evaluated at baseline, 6 months, 12 months and yearly thereafter until completion of protocol therapy. It was required that women be non-hyperlipidemic and not taking lipid-lowering drugs at time of entry on this trial. RESULTS: Three hundred and forty seven women were enrolled in the study. The letrozole and the placebo groups demonstrated marginally significant differences in the percentage change from baseline in HDL cholesterol at 6 months (P=0.049), in LDL cholesterol at 12 months (P=0.033) and triglycerides at 24 months (P=0.036). All comparisons of lipid parameters at other time points were not significantly different between the two treatment groups. No statistically significant differences in the number of patients exceeding the thresholds defined for the lipid parameters were found between the two treatment groups. CONCLUSIONS: The MA.17 trial demonstrated a significant improvement in disease-free survival with the use of letrozole as extended adjuvant therapy post tamoxifen. Results from this study suggests that letrozole does not significantly alter serum cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides or Lp(a) in non-hyperlidiemic postmenopausal women with primary breast cancer treated up to 36 months following at least 5 years of adjuvant tamoxifen therapy. These findings further support the tolerability of extended adjuvant letrozole in postmenopausal women following standard tamoxifen therapy.

Generalized density functional theory for degenerate states.

An extension of density functional theory is proposed for degenerate states. There are suitably selected basic variables beyond the subspace density. Generalized Kohn-Sham equations are derived. A direct method is proposed to ensure the fixed value of ensemble quantities. Then the Kohn-Sham equations are similar to the conventional Kohn-Sham equations. But the Kohn-Sham potential is different for different ensembles. A simple local expression is proposed for the correlation energy.

In vitro mutation and selection of doubled-haploid Brassica napus lines with improved resistance to Sclerotinia sclerotiorum.

This paper describes a new protocol to develop doubled-haploid (DH) Brassica napus lines with improved resistance to Sclerotinia sclerotiorum. In this protocol, haploid seedlings derived from microspore cultures of B. napus were used to produce haploid calli for in vitro mutation-selection. For routine screening, mutation was induced by EMS (ethylmethane sulfonate) or occurred spontaneously, and screening for resistant mutants occurred on media with added oxalic acid (OA) as a selection agent. In tests with selected lines, the optimal concentration of EMS for mutation was determined to be 0.15%, and the optimal concentration of OA for in vitro screening was 3 mmol/l (half lethal dose was 3.1 mmol/l) for the first cycle of screening. There was an accumulated effect of OA toxicity on calli over two cycles of screening, but the growth and capacity of the surviving calli for regenerating seedlings were not affected by OA. Of the 54 DH lines produced from the in vitro mutation-selection, two DH lines of resistant mutants, named M083 and M004, were selected following seedling and glasshouse tests. The resistance of M083 and M004 to S. sclerotiorum following tests with both mycelial inoculum and OA was greater than that of their donor lines and the resistant control Zhongyou 821. In both glasshouse and field disease nurseries, disease indices on M083 and M004 were less than 50% of those of the control. The time required for M083 and M004 to mature was 14 days and 10 days shorter, respectively, than that of their donor lines. Furthermore, M083 had more pods per inflorescence, a greater 1,000 seed weight and higher yield than its donor line. Random amplified polymorphic DNA characterisation showed that M083 had DNA band patterns that differed from its donor line.

A meta-analysis of case-control studies on the combined effect of hepatitis B and C virus infections in causing hepatocellular carcinoma in China.

We investigated whether concurrent infection by hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) in China, a hyperepidemic area for these infections, was associated with a higher risk of causing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) than each infection alone in a meta-analysis in China, 32 case-control studies involving 3201 cases and 4005 controls, identified from a computer-based literature search from 1966 to 2004. The pooled odds ratio and 95% confidence interval (CI) for HBsAg positivity was 14.1 (95% CI: 10.6-18.8); for anti-HCV/HCV RNA positivity was 4.6 (95% CI: 3.6-5.9); for HBsAg positivity and anti-HCV/HCV RNA negativity were 15.6 (95% CI: 11.5-21.3); for HBsAg negativity and anti-HCV/HCV RNA positivity were 8.1 (95% CI: 5.0-13.0); and positivity for both HBsAg and anti-HCV/HCV RNA was 35.7 (95% CI: 26.2-48.5). We conclude that HBV and HCV infections are important independent risk factors for HCC in China, and that dual infection by HBV and HCV is associated with a higher risk of causing HCC than each infection alone, suggesting a synergism between HBV and HCV.

Cholesteryl ester transfer protein TaqIB variant, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels, cardiovascular risk, and efficacy of pravastatin treatment: individual patient meta-analysis of 13,677 subjects.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have reported that the cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) TaqIB gene polymorphism is associated with HDL cholesterol (HDL-C) levels and the risk of coronary artery disease (CAD), but the results are inconsistent. In addition, an interaction has been implicated between this genetic variant and pravastatin treatment, but this has not been confirmed. METHODS AND RESULTS: A meta-analysis was performed on individual patient data from 7 large, population-based studies (each >500 individuals) and 3 randomized, placebo-controlled, pravastatin trials. Linear and logistic regression models were used to assess the relation between TaqIB genotype and HDL-C levels and CAD risk. After adjustment for study, age, sex, smoking, body mass index (BMI), diabetes, LDL-C, use of alcohol, and prevalence of CAD, TaqIB genotype exhibited a highly significant association with HDL-C levels, such that B2B2 individuals had 0.11 mmol/L (0.10 to 0.12, P<0.0001) higher HDL-C levels than did B1B1 individuals. Second, after adjustment for study, sex, age, smoking, BMI, diabetes, systolic blood pressure, LDL-C, and use of alcohol, TaqIB genotype was significantly associated with the risk of CAD (odds ratio=0.78 [0.66 to 0.93]) in B2B2 individuals compared with B1B1 individuals (P for linearity=0.008). Additional adjustment for HDL-C levels rendered a loss of statistical significance (P=0.4). Last, no pharmacogenetic interaction between TaqIB genotype and pravastatin treatment could be demonstrated. CONCLUSIONS: The CETP TaqIB variant is firmly associated with HDL-C plasma levels and as a result, with the risk of CAD. Importantly, this CETP variant does not influence the response to pravastatin therapy.

The contribution of mast cells to the late-phase of allergic asthma in rats.

INTRODUCTION: Mast cells are thought to be the main cause of an immediate asthmatic response, but their contribution to the late-phase of asthma is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To prove the contribution of preactivated mast cells to the late phase of allergic asthma by advanced activation. METHODS: Mast cell function in the late-phase of asthma was studied. Rats (wild, +/+ and mast cell deficient, Ws/Ws) were challenged with OVA to investigate the relationship between the contraction of airways and the population of inflammatory cells in the trachea. RESULT: During the entire asthmatic period, the contraction of the airway after OVA challenge in +/+ rats was enhanced significantly compared to Ws/Ws rats, especially in the late phase. The bronchoalveolar lavage fluid histamine in +/+, but not Ws/Ws, rats increased 5.3-fold in 30 min and 3.4-fold in 8 h after challenge, significantly. The number of mucosal mast cells in the tracheal epithelial layer in +/+ rats increased significantly 2.2-fold over controls at 8 h after challenge, as demonstrated by in situ hybridization. CONCLUSIONS: Mast cells may contribute to the late phase of asthmatic response by continuous mast cell activation and the mucosal mast cell number increased in the late phase of asthmatic response.

A candidate gene approach to searching for low-penetrance breast and prostate cancer genes.

Most cases of breast and prostate cancer are not associated with mutations in known high-penetrance genes, indicating the involvement of multiple low-penetrance risk alleles. Studies that have attempted to identify these genes have met with limited success. The National Cancer Institute Breast and Prostate Cancer Cohort Consortium--a pooled analysis of multiple large cohort studies with a total of more than 5,000 cases of breast cancer and 8,000 cases of prostate cancer--was therefore initiated. The goal of this consortium is to characterize variations in approximately 50 genes that mediate two pathways that are associated with these cancers--the steroid-hormone metabolism pathway and the insulin-like growth factor signalling pathway--and to associate these variations with cancer risk.

Healthy Eating Index and C-reactive protein concentration: findings from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey III, 1988-1994.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether diet quality is associated with C-reactive protein concentration. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study using data from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1988-1994). SETTING: Representative sample of the US population. SUBJECTS: A total of 13 811 men and women aged >/=20 y. INTERVENTIONS: We examined the cross-sectional associations between the Healthy Eating Index (HEI), a measure of diet quality according to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, and serum C-reactive protein concentration. Dietary information was assessed using a 24-h recall. RESULTS: After adjustment for age, sex, race or ethnicity, education, smoking status, cotinine concentration, body mass index, waist-hip-ratio, aspirin use, alcohol use, physical activity level, and energy intake, HEI score was inversely associated with an elevated C-reactive protein concentration in logistic regression analysis (odds ratio per 10 unit change: 0.92; 95th confidence interval (CI): 0.86-0.99). Among the components, only the score for grain consumption was inversely associated with an elevated C-reactive protein concentration. Compared with participants in the lowest quintile of number of servings of grain consumption, the adjusted odds ratios of having an elevated C-reactive protein concentration for participants in the second, third, fourth, and fifth quintiles were 0.87 (95th CI: 0.67, 1.12), 0.85 (95th CI: 0.69, 1.06), 0.79 (95th CI: 0.65, 0.96), and 0.68 (95th CI: 0.52, 0.88), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Grain consumption may reduce inflammation. Our findings require confirmation.

Associations between concentrations of alpha- and gamma-tocopherol and concentrations of glucose, glycosylated haemoglobin, insulin and C-peptide among US adults.

Our objective was to study the cross-sectional associations between concentrations of alpha- and gamma-tocopherol and concentrations of glucose, glycosylated haemoglobin, insulin and C-peptide among US adults. We used data for 1289 participants without self-reported diabetes who were aged > or =20 years in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999-2000. Alpha-tocopherol concentration was inversely associated with glucose concentration (beta per mmol/l=-0.01064, SE 0.00356, P=0.004) after adjusting for age, sex, race or ethnicity, education, smoking status, concentrations of total cholesterol and triacylglycerols, systolic blood pressure, waist circumference, alcohol use, physical activity, time watching television or videos or using a computer, and use of vitamin/mineral/dietary supplements. Among 659 participants who did not report using supplements, this association was no longer significant whereas the concentration of alpha-tocopherol was inversely associated with concentration of C-peptide (beta per mmol/l=-0.01121, SE 0.00497, P=0.024). Gamma-tocopherol concentration was positively associated with concentration of glucose (beta per mmol/l=0.09169, SE 0.02711, P=0.001) and glycosylated haemoglobin (beta per mmol/l=0.04954, SE 0.01284, P<0.001), but not insulin or C-peptide. The relationships between physiologic concentrations of the various forms of vitamin E and measures of glucose intolerance deserve additional investigation.

Expression of insulin-like growth factor I by activated hepatic stellate cells reduces fibrogenesis and enhances regeneration after liver injury.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) express alpha-smooth muscle actin (alphaSMA) and acquire a profibrogenic phenotype upon activation by noxious stimuli. Insulin-like growth I (IGF-I) has been shown to stimulate HSCs proliferation in vitro, but it has been reported to reduce liver damage and fibrogenesis when given to cirrhotic rats. METHODS: The authors used transgenic mice (SMP8-IGF-I) expressing IGF-I under control of alphaSMA promoter to study the influence of IGF-I synthesised by activated HSCs on the recovery from liver injury. RESULTS: The transgene was expressed by HSCs from SMP8-IGF-I mice upon activation in culture and in the livers of these animals after CCl4 challenge. Twenty four hours after administration of CCl4 both transgenic and wild type mice showed similar extensive necrosis and increased levels of serum transaminases. However at 72 hours SMP8-IGF-I mice exhibited lower serum transaminases, reduced hepatic expression of alphaSMA, and improved liver morphology compared with wild type littermates. Remarkably, at this time all eight CCl4 treated wild type mice manifested histological signs of liver necrosis that was severe in six of them, while six out of eight transgenic animals had virtually no necrosis. In SMP8-IGF-I mice robust DNA synthesis occurred earlier than in wild type animals and this was associated with enhanced production of HGF and lower TGFbeta1 mRNA expression in the SMP8-IGF-I group. Moreover, Colalpha1(I) mRNA abundance at 72 hours was reduced in SMP8-IGF-I mice compared with wild type controls. CONCLUSIONS: Targeted overexpression of IGF-I by activated HSCs restricts their activation, attenuates fibrogenesis, and accelerates liver regeneration. These effects appear to be mediated in part by upregulation of HGF and downregulation of TGFbeta1. The data indicate that IGF-I can modulate the cytokine response to liver injury facilitating regeneration and reducing fibrosis.

Performance of an intensive pond system treating municipal wastewater in a cold region.

A full-scale intensive pond system (IPS) with shorter HRT was designed, constructed and operated in Jining, Inner-Mongolia for the treatment of municipal wastewater, which is a mixed domestic and industrial wastewater characterized by quite high SS and lower BOD5/COD ratio values or lower biodegradability. Therefore, the pond system was designed as an integrated intensive pond system (IIPS) consisting of settling/anaerobic pond (SAP), intensified anaerobic pond (IAP), facultative pond (FP), and polishing ponds (PPs). In order to improve the performance of the IPS, some intensified measures were made, including inlet and outlet even-distribution systems of each unit pond, package of biofilm carrier in IAP for the increase and even distribution of biomass; overflow waterfalls on the dikes between unit ponds for the increase of DO in pond water, gravel filtration dike (or dam) for removing suspended solids including algae, which have improved the performance of the IPS remarkably in terms of removal of main pollutants, such as SS, COD, BOD5, TN, NH3-N, TP and total bacteria. The final effluent from the IPS in warm seasons from May to October were SS 7.2-10.8 mg/L, BOD5 8.5-19.6 mg/L, COD 44.1 - 76.5 mg/L, and NH3-N 1.5-10.2 mg/L, which well meet Chinese national discharge standard (2nd class) of secondary municipal wastewater treatment plants, i.e. BOD5 and SS 30 mg/L respectively, COD 100 mg/L, and NH3-N 25 mg/L.
