Life change and lung cancer.

Seventy-four lung cancer patients were studied with the Social Readjustment Rating Scale. There was a significantly higher association of recent life change with younger cancer patients than with older ones. There was no such difference in a control group of colorectal cancer patients. These results imply that lung cancer patients fall into two groups: a younger group, in which life change is a promoting factor, and an older group, in which life change has little or no effect in precipitating the onset of the disease.

Life change and gastric cancer.

Forty colorectal cancer patients, 14 gastric cancer patients, and 10 normal controls were tested with the Social Readjustment Rating Scale. The gastric cancer patients had a significantly higher amount of life change (p less than 0.05) in the 2-year period preceding the onset of the first symptoms of their illness. Moreover, there was a significant (p less than 0.01) negative correlation between amount of life change and age at onset of symptoms in gastric cancer, but not in colorectal cancer. There was also no correlation between age and life change in the normal controls. These findings suggest that emotional stress may be a predisposing factor in gastric cancer.

Outcome of influenza infection: effect of site of initial infection and heterotypic immunity.

An infection established throughout the total respiratory tract of mice with a highly lung adapted influenza virus (H0N1) led to death from viral pneumonia. The 50% lethal dose (LD(50)) was approximately the same as the 50% infectious dose (ID(50)). An infection with the same virus initiated in the nasal mucosa spread to the trachea and lungs over a 3- to 5-day period but was not lethal except at very high infecting doses. The LD(50) was 30,000 times the ID(50). Mice that had recovered from a prior infection with A/PC/73(H3N2) demonstrated enhanced recovery (heterotypic immunity) when challenged with A/PR/8/34(H0N1). Heterotypically immune mice infected while anesthetized with this potentially lethal virus stopped shedding virus from the nose, trachea, and lungs by day 7 and recovered. Heterotypically immune mice, infected awake, stopped shedding virus from the nose by day 5, and, in fact, the virus did not spread to the trachea or lungs. Thus, some of the variation in the severity of influenza infections may be explained by two factors: the site of initial infection and previous infection with heterotypic influenza virus.

The presentation of malignant lymphoma in the oral cavity and pharynx.

The oral and oropharyngeal presentation of malignant lymphoma is an uncommon occurrence. We are reporting ten cases from our radiation center because this cancer is most likely to be first seen and recognized by the dental practitioner at the earliest stage when it is radiocurable. More advanced lesions, as in our series, become associated with systemic lymphomatous disease and patients have a poor survival rate. Only two of our ten patients survived the 5-year interval after diagnosis.

Isolation and purification of endotoxin by hydrolytic enzymes.

Various commercial hydrolases were used in an attempt to degrade the endotoxic lipopolysaccharide macromolecule. Some inert components, such as peptides and nucleic acids, could be removed from endotoxin preparations. As a result, endotoxic activity, measured by pyrogenicity, Shwartzman reaction, and mouse lethality, was increased. The remarkable resistance of endotoxin to hydrolases led to the use of such enzymes for the liberation and purification of endotoxin from whole bacterial cells.

Bioconversion systems for food and water on long term space missions.

An imperative for prolonged Space flight missions is the conservation of resources. Extensive resupply could pose technological and logistical challenges for those responsible for the management and successful completion of the mission. Therefore, the biological waste water reclamation system (BWWR) which requires little or no expendable supplies and the waste cellulose to edible mushroom conversion system (CMCS) which is conceived as a low energy crop waste recycling system are prototype instruments which have been conceived as solutions to the mission resupply problem. Out tests, conducted with relatively crude devices based on the original concepts, indicate that further research on the basic principles underlying the systems and refinement of the engineering designs will lead to hardware with the potential to satisfy the requirement for minimal re-supply while providing recycled water and edible mushrooms.

Primary malignant lymphoma of the paranasal sinuses.

A case of primary malignant lymphoma of the paranasal sinuses is presented. The patient, a 56-year-old white man, had a good response to Cobalt 60 therapy. A review of the literature reveals that this rare tumor occurs predominantly in older individuals, and that the chance for survival is good when radiation has been administered.
