Monitoring statistical magnetic fluctuations on the nanometer scale.

Statistical fluctuations of the magnetization are measured on the nanometer scale. As the experimental monitor we use the characteristic photoluminescence signal of a single electron-hole pair confined in one magnetic semiconductor quantum dot, which sensitively depends on the alignment of the magnetic ion spins. Quantitative access to statistical magnetic fluctuations is obtained by analyzing the linewidth broadening of the single dot emission. Our all-optical technique allows us to address a magnetic moment of only approximately equal 100 micro(B) and to resolve statistical changes on the order of a few micro(B).

Peak effect in single crystal MgB(2) superconductor for H axially c-axis.

We have studied the phase diagram of the MgB(2) superconductor using a single crystal for the H parallel c-axis. For the first time we report the existence of peak effect in the screening current in the MgB(2) for the H parallel c-axis. In the magnetic field regime 10<H<13.5 kOe the local fundamental diamagnetic moment displays a very narrow diamagnetic step. For higher fields this step is transformed to a peak (peak effect) and, finally, for H<10 kOe the diamagnetic step is transformed to a gradual transition.

Video-assisted thoracoscopic esophagectomy and radical lymph node dissection for esophageal cancer. A series of 75 cases.

BACKGROUND: The efficacy of thoracoscopic radical esophagectomy for cancer has yet to be established, mainly because previous reports have not included a sufficient number of cases. METHODS: Seventy-five treatment-naive patients with esophageal cancer without contiguous spread underwent esophageal mobilization and extensive mediastinal lymphadenectomy through a 5-cm mini-thoracotomy and four trocar ports. RESULTS: Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery was performed without major intraoperative complications or emergency conversion to open surgery. We retrieved 34.1+/-13.0 mediastinal nodes, including 11.5+/-3.8 tracheobronchial nodes and 6.2+/-3.0 recurrent laryngeal nodes. Mean time of operation and blood loss were less in the last 39 patients than the first 36 (186.7+/-25.3 min and 165.4+/-101.8 g vs 270. 2+/-96.0 min and 421.5+/-31.2 g, respectively: p <0.0001 and p <0.001). Pulmonary morbidity was 5% in the later 39 patients. Survival was 90%, 80%, and 57% at 1, 2, and 5 years after surgery. CONCLUSION: Thoracoscopic radical esophagectomy has less morbidity and comparable survival to conventional surgery, after a moderate amount of experience. Mini-thoracotomy is essential to perform the procedure safely and effectively.

Usefulness of self-expandable metallic stent with an antireflux mechanism as a palliation for malignant strictures at the gastroesophageal junction.

BACKGROUND: Patients with unresectable malignant gastroesophageal strictures often are troubled with reflux esophagitis after stent placement. METHODS: A self-expandable metallic stent (SEMS) without an antireflux mechanism was placed in seven patients with unresectable malignant gastroesophageal strictures (group A), and SEMS with an antireflux mechanism was placed in five patients (group B). After we obtained monitoring systems, two patients in group A and all the patients in group B underwent measurement of bilirubin and pH in the esophagus using a 24-h bilirubin and pH monitor. RESULTS: The mean percentage of total time less than 0.14 for use of the bilirubin absorbance unit was 12.4% in group B and 64.0% in group A. The mean percentage of total time for a pH less than 4 was 2.9% in group B and 37.8% in group A. CONCLUSION: The placement of SEMS with the antireflux mechanism can be effective not only for palliation of gastroesophageal stricture, but also for prevention of reflux.

Transcriptional regulation of Arabidopsis thaliana phytochelatin synthase (AtPCS1) by cadmium during early stages of plant development.

Transcriptional regulation of Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh. phytochelatin synthase (AtPCS1) by cadmium (Cd) was analyzed at various stages of plant development using transgenic Arabidopsis and wild-type plants. Histochemical analysis of beta-glucuronidase (GUS) activity in transgenic lines carrying a uidA gene driven by a 2.0-kb AtPCS1 promoter revealed higher GUS activities in 5-day-old seedlings subjected to 50 microM Cd treatment for 5 days, beginning at seed germination, than in non-treated plants. This high level of GUS activity gradually decreased as plants continued their growth until no differences were observed between Cd-treated and non-treated transgenic plants. The observed GUS activity due to Cd treatment during the early stage of plant development corresponded with induction of AtPCS1 mRNA as confirmed by RNA blot analysis of wild-type Arabidopsis. The steady-state level of AtPCS1 mRNA increased by 2-fold in 5-day-old Cd-treated wild-type Arabidopsis compared to non-treated seedlings. Moreover, AtPCS1 protein levels increased following Cd treatment as observed in western blot analysis of transgenic Arabidopsis lines carrying a C-terminal FLAG-tagged AtPCS1 genomic DNA driven by a 2.0-kb AtPCS1 promoter. The transcriptional regulation of AtPCS1 by Cd during the early stage of seedling development seemed to be correlated with a higher Cd sensitivity in cad2, an Arabidopsis mutant deficient in phytochelatin synthesis, during early stages of plant development. This was supported by our finding that Cd sensitivity in cad2 was reduced as plants continued their growth, and was comparable to that of wild-type plants.

de Haas-van Alphen effect in single crystal MgB2.

We report observations of quantum oscillations in single crystals of the high temperature superconductor MgB2. Three de Haas-van Alphen frequencies are clearly resolved. Comparison with band structure calculations strongly suggests that two of these come from a single warped Fermi surface tube along the c direction, and that the third arises from cylindrical sections of an in-plane honeycomb network. The measured values of the effective mass range from (0.44-0.68)m(e). By comparing these to calculated band masses, we find that the electron-phonon coupling strength lambda is a factor of approximately 3 larger for the c-axis tube orbits than for the in-plane network orbit, in accord with recent microscopic calculations.

Charge ordering fluctuation and optical pseudogap in La(1-x)Ca(x)MnO(3).

Optical spectroscopy was used to investigate the optical gap ( 2 Delta) due to charge ordering (CO) and related pseudogap developments with x and temperature ( T) in La(1-x)Ca(x)MnO(3) ( 0.48< or =x< or =0.67). Surprisingly, we found 2 Delta/k(B)T(CO) is as large as 30 for x approximately 0.5, and decreases rapidly with increasing x. Simultaneously, the optical pseudogap, possibly starting from T* far above T(CO) becomes drastically enhanced near x = 0.5, producing non-BCS T-dependence of 2 Delta with the large magnitude far above T(CO), and systematic increase of T* for x approximately 0.5. These results unequivocally indicate systematically enhanced CO correlation when x approaches 0.5 even though T(CO) decreases.

Transverse envelope dynamics of a 28.5-GeV electron beam in a long plasma.

The transverse dynamics of a 28.5-GeV electron beam propagating in a 1.4 m long, (0-2)x10(14) cm(-3) plasma are studied experimentally in the underdense or blowout regime. The transverse component of the wake field excited by the short electron bunch focuses the bunch, which experiences multiple betatron oscillations as the plasma density is increased. The spot-size variations are observed using optical transition radiation and Cherenkov radiation. In this regime, the behavior of the spot size as a function of the plasma density is well described by a simple beam-envelope model. Dynamic changes of the beam envelope are observed by time resolving the Cherenkov light.

Electronic structure of MgB2 from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy.

The first angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy results from MgB2 single crystals are reported. Along the GammaK and GammaM directions, we observed three distinct dispersive features approaching the Fermi energy. These can be assigned to the theoretically predicted sigma (B 2p(x,y)) and pi (B 2p(z)) bands. In addition, a small parabolic-like band is detected around the Gamma point, which can be attributed to a surface-derived state. The overall agreement between our results and the band calculations suggests that the electronic structure of MgB2 is of a conventional nature, thus implying that electron correlations are weak and may be of little importance to superconductivity in this system.

Swelling-induced Ca2+ release from intracellular calcium stores in rat submandibular gland acinar cells.

The effects of osmotically-induced cell swelling on cytoplasmic free Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) were studied in acinar cells from rat submandibular gland using microspectrofluorimetry. Video-imaging techniques were also used to measure cell volume. Hypotonic stress (78% control tonicity) caused rapid cell swelling reaching a maximum relative volume of 1.78 +/- 0.05 (n = 5) compared to control. This swelling was followed by regulatory volume decrease, since relative cell volume decreased significantly to 1.61 +/- 0.08 (n = 5) after 10 min exposure to hypotonic medium. Osmotically induced cell swelling evoked by medium of either 78% or 66% tonicity caused a biphasic increase of [Ca2+]i. The rapid phase of this increase in [Ca2+]i was due to release of Ca2 + from intracellular stores, since it was also observed in cells bathed in Ca2+-free solution. The peak increase of [Ca2+]i induced by cell swelling was 3.40 +/- 0.49 (Fura-2 F340/F380 fluorescence ratio, n = 11) and 3.17 +/- 0.43 (n = 17) in the presence and the absence of extracellular Ca2+, respectively, corresponding to an absolute [Ca2+]i of around 1 microm. We found that around two-thirds of cells tested still showed some swelling-induced Ca2+ release (SICR) even after maximal concentrations (10(-5) M - 10(-4) M) of carbachol had been applied to empty agonist-sensitive intracellular Ca2+ stores. This result was confirmed and extended using thapsigargin to deplete intracellular Ca2+ pools. Hypotonic shock still raised [Ca2+]i in cells pretreated with thapsigargin, confirming that at least some SICR occurred from agonist-insensitive stores. Furthermore, SICR was largely inhibited by pretreatment of cells with carbonyl cyanide m-cholorophenyl hydrazone (CCCP) or ruthenium red, inhibitors of mitochondrial Ca2+ uptake. Our results suggest that the increase in [Ca2+]i, which underlies regulatory volume decrease in submandibular acinar cells, results from release of Ca2+ from both agonist-sensitive and mitochondrial Ca2+ stores.

X-ray emission from betatron motion in a plasma wiggler.

The successful utilization of an ion channel in a plasma to wiggle a 28.5-GeV electron beam to obtain broadband x-ray radiation is reported. The ion channel is induced by the electron bunch as it propagates through an underdense 1.4-meter-long lithium plasma. The quadratic density dependence of the spontaneously emitted betatron x-ray radiation and the divergence angle of approximately (1-3)x10(-4) radian of the forward-emitted x-rays as a consequence of betatron motion in the ion channel are in good agreement with theory. The absolute photon yield and the peak spectral brightness at 14.2-keV photon energy are estimated.

Hosing and sloshing of short-pulse GeV-class wakefield drivers.

This Letter examines the electron-hosing instability in relation to the drivers of current and future plasma-wakefield experiments using fully three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation models. The simulation results are compared to numerical solutions and to asymptotic solutions of the idealized analytic equations. The measured growth rates do not agree with the existing theory and the behavior is shown to depend sensitively on beam length, shape, and charge. We find that even when severe hosing occurs the wake can remain relatively stable.

Monte Carlo simulation of sinusoidally modulated superlattice growth.

The fabrication of ZnSe/ZnTe superlattices grown by the process of rotating the substrate in the presence of an inhomogeneous flux distribution instead of the successively closing and opening of source shutters is studied via Monte Carlo simulations. It is found that the concentration of each compound is sinusoidally modulated along the growth direction, caused by the uneven arrival of Se and Te atoms at a given point of the sample, and by the variation of the Te/Se ratio at that point due to the rotation of the substrate. In this way we obtain a ZnSe(1-x)Tex alloy in which the composition x varies sinusoidally along the growth direction. The period of the modulation is directly controlled by the rate of the substrate rotation. The amplitude of the compositional modulation is monotonic for small angular velocities of the substrate rotation, but is itself modulated for large angular velocities. The average amplitude of the modulation pattern decreases as the angular velocity of substrate rotation increases and the measurement position approaches the center of rotation. The simulation results are in good agreement with previously published experimental measurements on superlattices fabricated in this manner.

Superconducting gap in MgB(2): electronic Raman scattering measurements of single crystals.

Polarization-resolved Raman scattering measurements were performed on MgB(2) single crystals to determine the magnitude, symmetry, and temperature dependence of the superconducting gap. A single sharp peak due to Cooper pair breaking appears in the electronic continuum below T(c), reaching a maximum Raman shift of 105 +/- 1 cm(-1) [2 Delta(0)/k(B)T(c) = 3.96 +/- 0.09] and showing up to 5 cm(-1) anisotropy between polarized and depolarized spectra. The temperature dependence of 2 Delta follows that predicted from BCS theory, while the anisotropy decreases with decreasing temperature. It is concluded that the Raman results are consistent with a slightly anisotropic s-wave gap in a conventional BCS superconductor.

Lambda(0) polarization in 800-GeV/cpp --> p(f)(Lambda0K+).

We report results from a study of Lambda(0) polarization in the exclusive reaction pp --> p(f)(Lambda0K+) at 800-GeV/c. We observe a dependence of the polarization on the Lambda0K+ invariant mass with large (+71%) positive polarization at small mass (1.63-GeV/c(2)) and large (-43%) negative polarization at large mass (2.75-GeV/c(2)). This observation confirms the result of the CERN ISR R608 experiment and extends the range over which the effect is observed. The strong dependence of the polarization on the Lambda0K+ invariant mass suggests that the origin of the polarization is closely related to the production dynamics of the diffractively produced Lambda0K+ system.

Exponential temperature dependence of the penetration depth in single crystal MgB2.

The temperature dependence of the London penetration depth, lambda(T), was measured in both single crystal and polycrystalline MgB2 samples by a high-resolution, radio frequency technique. A clear exponential temperature dependence of lambda(T) was observed at low temperature, indicating s-wave pairing. A BCS fit to the lowest temperature data gives an in-plane energy gap Delta of 30+/-2 K (2Delta/T(c) = 1.5+/-0.1), which is significantly smaller than the standard BCS weak coupling value of 3.5. We find that the data are best described by a two-gap model.

Temporal and regional profile of neuronal and glial cellular injury after induction of kaolin hydrocephalus.

AIM: To study regional and temporal pattern of glial and neuronal reaction to induction of kaolin hydrocephalus in adult rats. Enzyme- and immunohistochemistry was performed in 20 adult rats with kaolin-hydrocephalus after 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks to glial glutamatergic transmission activity (GLDH) and neuronal nitrous oxide synthetic activity (nNOS). Also, glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), 68 kd neurofilament protein (NF68) and synaptophysin (SYN38) and basic fibroblastic growth-factor (bFGF) were stained. Results were quantified by imaging analysis (SCION IMAGE) and expressed as relative immunopositive area. After 2 weeks, nNos-activity increased in cortical and hippocampal neurones (CA1 and CA3) and GLDH-activity also showed increases, most significant in periventricular white matter (25.7 +/- 3.8 vs. 15.5 +/- 4.9; p < 0.001) and hippocampus (p < 0.01). After 4 or 6 weeks, global cortical GLDH-activity showed further marked increases (25.7 +/- 3.9 vs. 11.3 +/- 1.5; p < 0.05), while sustained structural changes have occurred: GFAP decreased in periventricular (3.3 +/- 0.5 vs. 6.3 +/- 1.2; p < 0.01), hippocampal and cortical astrocytes (0.9 +/- 0.34 vs. 5.0 +/- 0.7%; p < 0.01), whereas NF68 in cortical efferent neurones increased (6.5 +/- 1.5% vs. 4.7 +/- 0.1; p < 0.01) followed by a decrease in cortical and hippocampal (CA1) SYN 38 (p < 0.05). Acute glial and neuronal reactions were almost functional and in chronic stages sustained structural changes predominated. Since neuronal reactions were pronounced in selective vulnerable areas glial reaction was not restricted to periventricular astrocytes.
