Retinal hemorrhages in newborn.

Two hundred and fifty eight newborn babies were studied for the presence of retinal hemorrhages between 1-3 days of birth. The overall incidence of retinal hemorrhages was found to be 18.9%. It was observed that the incidence of retinal hemorrhages was higher in unassisted vaginal deliveries than in assisted births. Also, a two fold higher incidence was noted in term infants as compared to preterm babies. No association was seen with birth asphyxia.

Asphyxia Neonatorum↗

Outcome of low birth weight babies with special reference to some maternal factors.

Neonatal outcome of 178 low birth weight (LBW) babies in this study was associated with 26.4% neonatal mortality. A significantly higher mortality rate was noted in presence of adverse maternal factors, birth weight less than 1.5 kg, prematurity and respiratory distress at birth. Premature rupture of membranes and leaking (greater than 12 h) were recorded in 75 cases. Significant association was observed for septicemia. Maternal postpartum weight less than 40 kg was associated with higher incidence of neonatal infections than when mother's weight was greater than 45 kg.

An epidemiological study of hepatitis B virus amongst blood donors.

The study was carried out on 186 professional blood donors. A detailed-socio economic profile of these donors was taken and the serum was tested for HBs. Ag. Majority (63.4 per cent) of the donors were in the age bracket of 30-40 years with an average age of 34 years. About 83.3 per cent were illiterate and belonged to the lowest rung of the socio economic scale. The average length of blood donation was observed to be 4 years with blood letting frequency of 4.4 within a stipulated period of three months. Most of them were anaemic with an average haemoglobin level of 8.2 gm per cent. The HBs Ag prevalence was observed to be 15.59 per cent. HBs Ag positivity was found to be significantly associated with the length and the frequency of blood donation (P less than .05). Remedial measures for prevention of viral hepatitis-B through professional blood donors was emphasized.
