[Epidemiology of hydatid cyst in Tunisia. Value of mass serologic surveys of hydatid cyst].

Three serological surveys were conducted for mass detection of hydatidosis in Tunisia. Microtubes were used for sampling of serum and plasma eluates were tested by the E. L. I. S. A. technique. More than 2,500 persons, mainly originating from rural areas (Souks, primary schools, military recruits, village dispensaries) were studied. 2/3 of individuals examined simultaneously underwent abdominal echotomography the findings of which were compared to those of serology. The whole data were discussed with respect to current status of hydatidosis in Tunisia.

[Critical analysis of practical sensitivity tests in the evaluation of the primary resistance rate of tuberculosis bacilli to antibiotics].

Tuberculosis bacilli strains isolated from patients with pulmonary tuberculosis were tested to antituberculosis drugs in our laboratory since 1967 with the same method and by the same staff. However, there was a great fluctuation in the primary resistance rates calculated from one year to another and from one area to another. The analysis of strain sample showed that the main reasons were : the unprecision of patients questionnary, the preselection of strains sent to the laboratory and the unrespect of sanitary sectorisation.

[Entamoeba histolytica and Entamoeba dispar: differentiation methods and implications].

Entamoeba histolytica and Entamoeba dispar are two species morphologically identical (except hematophagous trophozoites) but one of them is pathogenic. Sensitive and specific molecular techniques which are able to distinguish E. histolytica from E. dispar have been developed recently. Detection of antigen in stool using the ELISA method is the diagnostic test method of choice for clinical use in the developing world. It is rapid and simple. Cultures for zymodeme analysis and PCR detection of the parasite remain research tools. Species identification is imperative both for improved clinical diagnosis and treatment and for planning control strategies.

[Absorption and urinary elimination of pyrazinamid administered alone or in combination with isoniazid and rifampicin].

The aim of this work to study the PZA absorption in man its urinary excretion. The PZA was administered alone and in association with INH or/and Rifampicin. The PZA dosage in blood and urine and pyrazinoic acid in urine were performed in a sample of 80 patients divided into 4 groups. PZA dosage was also performed in blood from mice in the same experimental conditions. Our results showed that in man, the titres in serum gave higher peaks when PZA was given alone. Titres were significantly lower when PZA was associated with the two other drugs. The comparative study of PZA seral rates in men and women in one side and mice in the other, showed that the seral concentration was proportional to the body weight. Urinary excretion of Pyrazinamide and pyrazinoic acid showed a relation between the seral concentration and the urinary concentration. However, there was no correlation between the maximum seral concentration and urinary excretion of pyrazinoic acid.

[National survey on pulmonary tuberculosis treatment. Bacteriological results].

A survey concerning the out come of the pulmonary tuberculosis treatment has been carried out in algeria. 11 districts were concerned. Patients received treatment in sanitary centers from January to March 1977. Smears were done before any treatment and after 12 months cure; Ziehl-Neelsen staining was performed at the local laboratory and sputum samples were sent to the central laboratory for fluorescence examination and culture. Positives cultures were tested to antituberculosis drugs. Bacteriological results obtained before and after 12 months treatment are reported.

[Survey on tuberculosis treatment in the Sahara. Preliminary bacteriological results].

The preliminary bacteriological results of a survey carried out in the Sahara desert and concerning antituberculosis treatment are reported. Two regimens were compared ; a twelve-months regimen SHE/HE and six months regimen RHEZ/RH. Out of 370 patients admitted in one year, 292 had a positive smear, whereas 40 had not any bacteriological proof. 275 strains were isolated and 205 were tested to antituberculosis drugs; 15% showed a resistance to a least one drug. The 15% rate was in fact very different from one sanitary district to another. The search for INH metabolites in the urines of patients before treatment showed 67 positive cases out of 341. The follow up was carried out at the 5th, 6th, 9th and 12th month after admission, smears and cultures of sputum and detection of INH metabolites in urines were used.

Serum zinc and blood rheology in sportsmen (football players).

We aimed at investigating relationships between zinc status, blood rheology and blood glucose during exercise. Twenty-one professional football players underwent a triangular maximal exercise test on cycloergometer, with progressively increasing work loads until VO2max. On the whole these subjects had a low serum zinc because nine of them had a hypozincemia (0.54 +/- 0.01 mg/l) which suggested a zinc deficiency. Subjects with low serum zinc were able to perform a lower power output (123 +/- 8.71 vs. 166.27 +/- 14.84 watts, p = 0.029) and exhibited a higher increase in blood lactate during exercise (7.51 +/- 0.81 vs. 5.57 +/- 0.33 mmol/l, p = 0.024) resulting in a lower 2 mmol lactate threshold (44.7 +/- 3.9% vs. 58.9 +/- 4.8% of maximal power output, p = 0.04). They were less able to maintain their plasma glucose and exhibited a tendency towards hypoglycemia (p = 0.0153). Hypozincemia was associated with a higher viscometric RBC rigidity index (p = 0.0009), and this index was negatively correlated to serum zinc (r = -0.68, p = 0.7 x 10(-3)). Blood viscosity at high shear rate (MT90 viscosimeter) corrected for hematocrit (45%) remained higher during exercise in these hypozincemic subjects (p = 0.003). This study suggests that zinc status may influence blood rheology during exercise, either by its direct action on RBC flexibility (demonstrated in vitro) or by its effect on lactate accumulation which may in turn modify erythrocyte fexibility.
