Submerged teeth.

Submersion occurs when a previously erupted tooth becomes embedded in the oral tissues. The purpose of this paper is to examine the distribution, the degree of re-impaction, the rate of congenital absence of the successor buds and the treatment in 28 submerged teeth in 17 patients.

Extra-articular ankylosis of the coronoid processes to the base of the skull. A case report.

Extra-articular temporomandibular bony ankylosis between the coronoid process and the base of the skull is quite uncommon. In this paper we present a case of fusion of the right coronoid to the maxilla and sphenoid bone in an 18-year-old male. This bony ankylosis was the result of surgical removal of an odontogenic tumour from the right mandibular ramus when the patient was 4 years old. The ankylosis of the right coronoid resulted in hypoplasia of the mandible and fibrous fusion between the left coronoid and the base of the skull. The patient was treated by bilateral operation. Postoperative recurrent dislocation of the left condyle was attributed mainly to unbalanced muscle activity and to the flattening of the articular eminence of the left temporomandibular joint which had developed during the long duration of the ankylosis. This was successfully treated by left condylectomy.

[Epidemiologic study of dental and dentoalveolar discrepancies in orthognathic children].

The type and the sequence of dental and dentoalveolar discrepancies accompanying Class I were investigated in this study in a sample of 8.018 children with dental and dentoalveolar discrepancies was found to be significant reaching the 43.8%. Orthodontic treatment is essential in a 20.2% of the cases. The most commonly observed discrepancies were found to be the posterior crossbite and the crowding of the teeth with the canines being usually buccally displaced.

[Tracing the postero-anterior radiograph].

In this paper the essential knowledge for the overall tracing of the postero--anterior cephalometric radiographs has been discussed. Special attention has been paid to the structures of the facial skeleton and their radiographic description as well as to the methodology of an effective tracing. This knowledge could be very useful to a better study of the postero--anterior radiograph which helps to a complete diagnosis.

[Relationships between the incisors and the skeletal vertical type of the face].

The purpose of this cephalometric investigation is to find out the dental and dentofacial relationships of the incisors with the skeletal vertical type of the face. The material of this study consisted of 200 lateral skull radiographs of an equal number of adult Greeks with normal occlusion and harmonious face. Ten cephalometric variables were measured and statistically analysed. The statistical analysis has been made separately for males and females. The mean value, standard deviation, maximum and minimum values were calculated for each variable. The following three factorial analyse of correspondences leaded to the definition of the existent relationships between the anterior teeth and the vertical facial type.

[Cephalometric standards of adult Greeks (Ricketts' ten factor analysis)].

In this study the ten factors which compose the Ricketts' summary analysis were measured on 81 lateral skull radiographs of adult Greeks (41 males and 40 females) with normal occlusion and harmonious face to establish cephalometric standards. The mean value, standard deviation, standard error of the mean, minimum and maximum values as well as the range of each variable were found and discussed for each sex separately as well as for the whole sample. The main conclusion of the study is that adult Greeks with normal occlusion and harmonious face present: a tendency to the brachy facial vertical type, a small retroposition of the maxilla and of the lower lip and prominent and labialy proclined lower incisors.

Early extraction of the mandibular third molar in case of eruption disturbances of the second molar.

PURPOSE: General consensus has been reached on extracting mandibular third molars when they are involved in pathologic processes. However, early extraction is advisable in cases of eruption disturbances of the mandibular second molar, before or during orthodontic treatment. METHODS: Thirty-two patients with early extraction of the mandibular third molar before or during orthodontic treatment were examined. RESULTS: In these cases either the presence of the third molar presented an obstacle in the eruption path of the second, or third molar germ removal was considered beneficial to the course of orthodontic treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Early extraction of the mandibular third molar facilitates the eruption of the second molar, especially in cases where evidence of crowding and lack of space in the posterior mandibular region exist. Orthodontic treatment may, in some cases, aggravate eruption disturbances of the second molar.
