It has recently been demonstrated that prostaglandins play an important role in human reproductive system. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the involvement of PGs in the onset of menstruation and in the cause of dysmenorrhea. In human endometrium PGF2 alpha were found in large amount in late luteal phase and especially in premenstrual period. PGE1 and PGF2 alpha concentrations in menstrual bloods were 3 to 4 times higher in dysmenorrheic subjects as compared to normal women. The high PGE1 and PGF2 alpha concentration of patients decreased to normal level in naproxen treated cycle. And the intensity of abdominal pain and lumbago decreased simultaneously. On the other hand, in normal woman, naproxen gave little effect on PGs concentration of menstrual fluids. High levels of PGs in dysmenorrheic subjects, decrease of PGs concentration by naproxen treatment and simultaneous alleviation of pain suggest the involvement of PGs in the cause of dysmenorrhea.

Computed tomography (CT) is useful for demonstrating a lesion of the optic pathway, because a slice of the brain almost parallel to the optic pathway can be viewed and the relationship between the optic pathway and the extent of the lesion can be demonstrated. We studied 53 cases of homonymous hemianopia by CT. In 85% of our cases, positive CT findings were obtained. When the lesion was in the occipital lobe, correlation between the size of the lesion and the type of visual field defect was observed.

We developed a novel blood glucose control system, using a model predictive method, to achieve optimal control of the blood glucose level in severely diabetic or pancreatectomized patients. This system is designed to predict glucose level changes in advance, considering delayed response time and the administered doses of insulin. This method is also designed to calculate the most appropriate insulin infusion rate by considering differences in individual response to insulin. In this study, we compared our system with a conventional proportional and differential controller (PD controller) to determine whether the new system could regulate the glucose level efficiently in pancreatectomized dogs. The model predictive control method resulted in a significant reduction of mean insulin infusion rate compared with the conventional PD controller (0.71 mU/kg per min vs. 1.81 mU/kg per min, p = 0.0005), when the glucose level in both methods reached the planned target level (100 mg/dl). The new system also tended to have a reduced mean glucose infusion rate for compensating for overshooting of the glucose level compared with the PD controller (0.7 mg/kg per min vs. 1.1 mg/kg per min, p = 0.16). These results indicate that the new system should be a useful tool for regulating the glucose level in severely diabetic patients.
Expression of insulin-like growth factor-2 (IGF-2) has been reported in tissue specimens and cell lines of human colorectal cancers. However, the effects of IGF-2 in colorectal cancer patients are not well known. In this study, IGF-2 staining was performed on tissue samples from 92 patients with colorectal cancer, and the relationship of IGF-2 staining to clinicopathological variables, proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) staining and patient survival was analyzed. IGF-2 staining was correlated with tumor progression, PCNA staining and patient survival. Our results suggest that IGF-2 plays an important role in tumor progression and that IGF-2 staining is useful as a prognostic factor in colorectal cancer patients.
Regional cerebellar blood flow was measured in a patient with left-sided ataxic hemiparesis, using single-photon emission computed tomography and N-isopropyl-p-[123I]Iodoamphetamine. X-ray computed tomography revealed a small infarct in the paramedian portion of the right upper basis pontis. Blood flow was markedly reduced in the contralateral cerebellar hemisphere corresponding to the side of ataxia. The present study emphasizes the value of the three-dimensional functional imaging of the cerebellum to investigate the responsible lesion for ataxia and to study function of the cerebro-cerebellar circuits.
Delayed metrizamide computed tomography (CT) was performed both preoperatively and postoperatively in 11 syringomyelia patients. Change of syrinx size between the studies was easily assessed on CT. The morphologic change of the syrinx gave useful information about its continuity. One of our cases had reoperation as a result of this CT information. All cases with Chiari I malformation still showed filling of the syrinx cavity by metrizamide after posterior fossa decompression and obex plugging. This supports the idea that the abnormal fluid circulation maintaining syringomyelic cavities is more than just the flow through the obex to the central canal but may also be from fluid passage through the cord substance.
